I went to the theater tonight...by myself...

Wanted to go see 'Casino Royale', but nobody I know wanted to go...some aversion to good movies, only stuff like 'Tenacious D' and 'Jackass 2' apparently are worth $8.

So yap, I was "that guy". Sitting there by himself watching a movie. It's weird, I have no probably going to a restaurant by myself or doing anything else for that matter. But in 29 years of being, this is the first time I've ever gone to the theater solo.

That is all.

For me to see a movie with someone is so rare, it has only happened about 4 times in my life, all about 2 to 3 years apart. I'm 25.

Big deal. I go to the theater alone all the time. It's actually rather enjoyable.

I actually enjoy going to the movies alone. Finding one empty seat in a crowded showing is much easier than finding two together.

Besides that, I really don't want to yap about a film right after it. I find that I haven't fully taken in the whole film and processed it enough to actually make an informed opinion on it just yet so the typical chit chat that happens after a film when watching it with someone is usually so forced and generally has the statement "I liked it" or "I didn't like it" without any real backing just yet. Give me an hour or so and then I'll be able to tell you what I really thought about it and exactly why.

But yeah.. I rather enjoy going by myself. Also it helps that I can go by my schedule. I always hated feeling like I was showing up too late or too early for the showing.

Another for movie-going solo. I hate planning too much ahead of time, so I rarely "plan" to see somthing with friends. Life is much simpler when you can head out to the movies on impulse.

Or run out to a late show.

I go to movies alone too, it's nice not having to explain the plot to your friends or family.

I mostly go with my fiance, but for the more arty stuff like indies or horror I go by myself and have no problem with doing so.

It's not like you can talk to them while you're there...(haha).

Several advantages to going solo:

1) No waiting for the other(s) to show up.
2) Sit where you want, instead of compromising.
3) See the movie you want, instead of compromising.

I have exactly the same opinion as you on this.

One goes to a theatre to see a film, not to talk and socialize, so I don't see anything wrong with going by yourself. It's funny, there's been some cases, such as going to a theatre for the first showing of the day, on a weekday, where not only is the theatre almost empty, but the other people are there by themselves too. That's the best, because you know you're not going to hear any talking during the movie.

I usually see more than 1 movie on an average trip to the theatre and most of my friends are not up for seeing more than 1, so I go alone a lot... plus I see pretty much everything that does open wide, and many of those movies my friends would rather not "waste the money" on... I find that going alone is enjoyable. No one talking to you during the film is a plus for me (a few friends are talkers - stopped going with them). I know some people who find they can't go alone, that seeing a movie is a social activity, but I just don't get it.

Yup, I just don't see the actual movie experience as a social event. My friends think I'm nuts, but unless we're all doing something before or after the movie, I'd prefer to go myself. The only thing that I HATE is when other people sit a seat away, right behind, or right in front of you when the WHOLE DAMN THEATER IS EMPTY. And I've got a bad leg, so I'm usually sitting on the very end of a row, it's not like I'm taking the prime real estate in the middle of the theater. I will never understand why people sit so close to other people when the theater's empty.

I'm the opposite of the OP, I usually always go to the movies alone and like it that way, whereas i feel weird going to a restaurant alone.

We have a toddler so I usually go alone too, and often in the early afternoon on weekends if I can manage it. I like being in a theater that isn't full and have no worries sitting alone. I almost prefer it now.

I go to the movies alone all the time, I don't mind, most of the time its because its the last minute thing and I decide to go since the theater is only 5 minutes away from where I live. I like going to the movies alone. I like seeing Comedys with friends. I never went to a movie alone till I was about 17 years old. I think Resident Evil was the first movie I seen by my self because no one else wanted to see the movie, then I started going all the time by my self. I still like going with friends but Its nice to go by your self and just relax for a couple hours.

Me too.

My wife likes to wait for the DVD, so I end up going alone alot.

My brother-in-law was in town this weekend and he went with me to see Casino Royal (although he saw it in DC with my other brother when he was there over Thanksgiving).

I got to about 12-18 movies a year and about half of them I go alone to.

This is easily fixed. Have people meet you at your house or go to see them, then go to the theatre. Easy for me because I'm about 2 minutes away from the nearest multiplex.

Sitting is generaly best middle of the row, middle of the theatre. Who can argue that?

And I don't see movies I don't want to see. Or, if I do, I certainly don't pay for my ticket.

Last movie I went alone to: Flags of Our Fathers.

I've never been by myself. Most of my friends are also into movies so I never run into any of the issues brought up.

I don't even go to the movies anymore. But when I do it's usually solo.
