What Are You Reading? December 2006

Last What Are You Reading? thread before the New Year!

Anyhow, to continue the discussion from last month:

I've got about 100 pages left in the first book of A Song Of Ice and Fire and I can honestly say this is the best fantasy book I have read in many, many years. I read a few of Goodkind's Sword Of Truth series but was very underwhelmed. The books didn't have much in the way of plot and seemed very pretentious to me. I've also tried out Jordan's Wheel Of Time series, which was better than The Sword Of Truth, but the later books just dragged and I quickly lost interest.

With A Game Of Thrones there has been soooo very much that has happened plot-wise and I can't remember the book dragging at any point. Not only that but the characters are so beautifully written that you actually care about what's going to happen to each of them, even some of the villians. I can't wait to start A Clash Of Kings!

I've been trying to find a good fantasy series to read for a while, I tried the 2 you mentioned above & couldn't get into them. I tried Steve Erikson's MALAZAN books b/c I heard some good things, & just couldn't get into them, no characters grabbed me, & then I finally tried the Fire & Ice books & I admit, it took me about 200 pages into A Game of Thrones to finally get all the names down, b/c the cast is huge, but that only makes the series more amazing, such a large cast but they are all fleshed out so well, it really is the most brilliantly written non-Tolkien fantasy series ever written IMO. And with the first book thefact that
Spoiler:
Martin kills what is not only the main character but probably the most likeable (even though Tyerion has always been my favorite character in the series)
, really sets the entire series up that anything can happen.

Been on this book for 2 weeks, it's to damn big! I've been reading it so much when I'm not reading it I still feel like I'm Pittsburgh in the 1920 walking around work using words like "Pobbycock" and "Carpetbagger"!

Right now I'm burning through Dead City by Joe McKinney. It's a silly little book, even by zombie book standards, and feels a lot like I'm reading my way through a B-movie. Though I've been spoiled when it comes to the undead ever since World War Z ...

And I've been taking my time with K.J. Bishop's The Etched City, which I'm loving. Someone recommended it to me after I mentioned that I was a big fan of Jeff VanderMeer's books, and I have been very impressed with it so far.

I have just finished:

I don't really agree with the politics implied in this novel, but none the less it was a fun and interesting thriller. It makes me want to go back and dive into some of Bova's countless sci-fi novels.

Currently reading - The 3rd Option by Vince Flynn

I read Transfer of Power just before this book and I have 3 more of his books to read lined up and ready to go! (Seperation of Power, Executive Power, and Term Limits) And I may be getting Memorial Day, Consent To Kill and Act of Treason for Christmas. Can you tell I like Vince Flynn?? Mitch Rapp is one bad mother!!

Man, I finished the latest book in the Song of Fire and Ice series last month. Great series. Definitely is going to be a series I go back to again and again.

Currently on Book 5 of the Wheel of Time series (Fires of Heaven) for the 4th time this year. Everytime I get stuck as to what I should read next, I end up picking up Eye of the World and a month later, I'm finishing Knife of Dreams again. Gotta love the characters in WoT. Heres hoping Robert Jordan gets over his life threatening illness (amyloidisis) enough to finish off the story for us. So far his body's been reacting well to the meds they've been pumping into him non stop since 4 days after Knife of Dreams came out. They think they've increased his life expectency from 1 year to maybe 5.

Once I finish WoT again, I figure to pick up The Prestige, and maybe that new Feist book that came out a few months back.
