DVD Talk review of 'Casablanca'

I read Daniel Hirshleifer's DVD review of Casablanca at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=25296 and...

Just read the review and thought it was spot on...Finally received my Casablanca HD-DVD yesterday from DDD, and this was the first of the classic HDs I have seen and I was blown away. Sure V and Batman Begins are great, but I was so impressed with the way this movie looked. It looked like it was made yesterday. This was definitely worth me being an early adopter.

*Edit: I know this belongs in the HD forum, but I did this from the review of the dvd so that's why its here.

Hey, thanks. I've always loved Casablanca, so it was a real treat to get to review the HD DVD. And yes, the film looks absolutely phenomenal. If you liked it, you should also check out The Adventures of Robin Hood and The Searchers, as well as the excellent reviews Josh and Adam did for them.

We discussed this a bit when the HD review section first started, and came to the conclusion that threads about the reviews probably belong in the Reviews forum. Though obviously you are free to start or continue a thread in the HD forum as well.

The only issue I have with the review is that I personally wouldn't have ranked the extras that high, simply because they're all ported over from the standard DVD with nothing new for the HD DVD. But otherwise, it's a great review. Hey, it's freakin' Casablanca...it would be hard to give it a bad review even if if was bare bones.

I was disappointed the Looney Tunes wasn't in HD, because the cartoons on Robin Hood were, but that wasn't enough to demote the disc to Highly Recommended. Honestly, this early in the game, I am willing to give a little leeway on the lack of HD features, especially on older films.

HD and aspect ratio are not directly related.

They are 4:3 pillarboxed into the center of the 16:9 frame. Yes, they are HD. Just as 2.35:1 movies letterboxed in a 16:9 frame can also be HD.
