Getting fiber in the house - any value?

My father currently has internet access via time warner cable (cable modem). The most he does on the Internet is sell on ebay... Anyway, he found a deal through Verizon where they will run fiber into the house and it will actually be cheaper (on a per month basis) and faster overall.. Someone is coming to install the fiber tomorrow (takes about 4-6 hrs).

Is it really faster, cheaper and worth it?
