There were some clever bits in the episode but the only time I actually laughed was during Homer's syrup tasting at the end.
I guess it would've been funnier if they hadn't repeated so many jokes from the past - weather they know it or not, The Simpson has basically been plagiarizing itself for the last five or six years.

I was kinda annoyed that Tom Wolfe got more screen time (and lines) than Gore Vidal. Especially since it's been previously established (in 'Summer Of 4'2" ') that Lisa's a Vidal fan.

I thought J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson at the poetry magazine was hilarious. Too bad they had to dumb it down by putting in an explicit Spiderman reference at the end.

I honestly felt like I'd seen this episode before. I had to double check to make sure it really was a new episode. Groundskeeper Willy as the grim reaper and the line, "Homer? Oh, that's just his car..." made me laugh but that's about it for me.
