Price on La Dolce Vida reflects 20% off. Super cheap.

Really good price. I bought the set at the current price without a 20% off sale because I thought they would sell out like the Buffy and Planet of the Apes set.

Save the Green Planet is another great deal after 20% off.

Any specific titles to be avoided due to technical problems like a bad transfer or missing scenes?

GODDAMIT!!! I don't have the money, but I ordered the La Dolce Vita CE and Teorema anyway. Time to tighten the belt...
Just kidding, I work in retail so with commissions, this time of year is the only time I really get to splurge. This is my really honest to goodness last order though...

Ordered La Dolce Vita (2 disc edition), Swept Away and Seven Beauties. I last saw these ages ago but particularly remember how hilarious the two Wertmuller films were.

Avoid: (poor transfers and more)
Kusturica's When father was on business (analog sourcing)
The Wooden's man bride (poor transfer)
Berlinguer I love you (analog transfer, terrible film)
301/302 (poor PAL port)
Cafe Au Lait (PAL port)
Dady Nostalgia (Pal port)
Divine Intervention(Pal port)
Do you remember Dolly Bell (analog sourcing)
Don Juan (plain terrible)
Donkey Skin ("combing")
Fresh Bait (Pal Port)
The Girl from Paris (excellent film but PAL-sourced dvd)
God is Great I am not (poor Tautou film)
In July (excellent film from Head-On's Fatih Akin, PAL-sourced)
Intervista (average at best transfer)
Intimacy (great Chereau, average transfer)
Jesus of Montreal (improper framing)
Moloch (PAL affair)
On Guard (PAL affair)
The official story (great film, lackluster treatment, PAL sourced)
The Pornographer (cut, opt for the R2)
Safe Conduct (PAL affair, opt for the AE disc)
Save the Green Planet (overseas versions better R2/R3)
Slightly Pregnant Man (a Mastroianni duff)
Soundless (incorrect framing)
The Story of Marie and Julien (I would CERTAINLY opt for the AE)
Tenth Distric Court (screened during Cannes, loved it, but I dont think it is everyone's cup of tea)
Teorema (poor transfer)
The Tree of Wooden Clogs (opt of the Italian DVD)
Tous Le Matins du Monde (I dont like the transfer, "combing")

Recommended
Children of the Century (average transfer, the only English friendly version)
Count of Monte Cristo (very good treatment)
Changing Times
Giles Wife (phenomenal film, very mild "combing")
The Kingdom (I would still recommend the R2 collection)
Nathalie (worth picking up if you are not region-free, otherwise pick the French-english friendly disc with proper font subs)
The Lina Wertmuller collection (slightly above average but the films are great, not PAL ports)
Syrian Bride (outstanding film, a few minor issues with the DVD, recommended)
Umbrellas of Cherbourg (unlike what other review sites claim...I like the transfer)
Tiresia (cruel and beautiful, top notch)
Triple Agent (top-notch Rohmer, decent transfer)
Un Coeur En Hiver (The Koch DISC OF THE YEAR, splendid presentation)
La Dolce Vita ("banding" still present, package splendid, collector's set well worth the reduced price).

Ok, Ciao,
Pro-B

Is there a English friendly PAL release of Akin's 'In July'? I wasn't aware of one well over a year ago and ended up opting for the R1.

I've considered getting Save The Green Planet only because it would be inexpensive, and the PAL R2 is NTSC-PAL which REALLY irritates me. What is the better transfer of Teorema? DVDBeaver says that it is at least comparable will the other versions with the bonus that it is anamorphic.

Thanks for the heads-up on La Dolce Vida. I had been holding back because of the price tag for a while. At $32 and change, I'll pull the trigger.

Must disagree here. As already mentioned, the R2 suffers from NTSC-PAL ghosting issues, but has some great extras. The R3 is probably best, but has no English subtitles on any of the bonus material, making it less than satisfying for most English speakers (myself included).

Where as the Region 1 (for once) has good picture AND a decent amout of translated supplemental material. If you enjoy the film, would recommmend this version without the hassle of importing.

That is fine with me ...but you are assuming that the only R2 version implied above is the Tartan UK disc. As there are a few people on this board that import Spanish-language discs I noted the R2 (the R3 is the best one picture-wise), and it is my fault that I did not make it clear.

Regardless, for English speakers the best version is still not in R1 land.

To answer the Teorema question...I would wait a bit as there is a slight possibility that the recently announced 3DVD set of Pasolini films in England might have a surprise or two.

Ciao,
Pro-B
