Best set/collection of Lord of the Rings trilogy?

Hello there DVD Talkers. I figured this would've been asked already but I couldnt find a thread about it .. I was wondering what is the best set/collection of the LOTR series. I'm asking this because I figured now is the time to get it as part of the DDD sale. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Available LOTR collections at DDD:

for the extras and best picture quality get LORD OF THE RINGS-EXTENDED BOX SET

the new set is great, having both cuts of the film, but at a loss of the extras. I would get the 12 disc box and pick up the old 2 discers cheap as you find them. I have a feeling they will be a part of the 4 dollar lots after thanksgiving this year

Well the top one is what I have, it has a ton of special features, and commentaries. It is the extended cut of each film not seen in theaters, most fans prefer these cuts. The one below it (the LE) set is nice because it has both the theatrical and extended cuts of each film, however it is a flipper disc (part of movie o one side, then you have to flip it to see other half) the other set has it spread on 2 separate discs. This is not a big difference unless you have a multi disc changer, then the extended set is better. I cannot speak of the specials on the LE set because I dont own it, but the extended cut has more info on these movies then I will everneed.
The DTS and picture quality on the extended cut is great.

Great thread, I've asked a few questions in the various LOTR threads but also wanted to know if the LE set has a box that houses all of the dvds together, or if it is just the 3 separate releases shrinkwrapped together?

any help appreicated.

ETA: Also, is the LE set missing DTS?
