EA's NBA Live '07 has been dropped for the PS3 and Sonic has been delayed until next year(Holiday '06). Isn't the NBA Live demo on the kiosks? That is fucked up if true.
Both articles are from Kotaku.com
NBA Live '07 -
Quote:
PS3 owners will have to wait until next year for some official NBA ball bouncing action. Electronic Arts' NBA Live 07, announced back at E3 in May, has been scrapped outright. EA's PR person David Tinson points out:
"We are concentrating our efforts on creating a spectacular NBA Street: Homecourt [instead of porting NBA Live 07]. [Homecourt] is coming to the PS3 and Xbox 360 early next year. "
Other than being used as an E3 example of what the system's hardware could do, game play details were never disclosed about what exactly was PS3-rrific about NBA Live 07. The first half of next year, NBA Street: Homecourt will hit the Xbox 360 and *hopefully* the PS3. Brian Ashcraft
Sonic the Hedgehog -
Quote:
Those of you looking forward to spending more time with Shadow the Hedgehog, this time on your PlayStation 3, are going to have to wait a little bit longer. Another PS3 title is going to miss the launch, and this time it's Sega's own flagship mascot, Sonic.
Why the delay, this close to launch? It seems Sega wants to spend more time working on downloadable content, but didn't specify exactly what that downloadable content was. I can only assume they're working on new ways to ruin my positive childhood memories of the Sega Genesis or they've finally inked a deal to get some 50 Cent tracks for Shadow's in-car stereo.
The game is specified now as "holiday 2006". Hopefully, they'll update it to "never". Sorry, I'm surly tonight. Still bitter about that whole Shadow thing.

so, how would you like to be on the buyers side if you just bought a PS3 on ebay for 2500.00 and the seller shipped you a weighted box with delivery confirmation and then when you contact Paypal about it they tell you "tough, atleast you got a package"?
this whole PS3 ebay thing could turn into a major nightmare for a buyer with the way Paypal treats these situations.
This same sorta thing happened last year the 360. Some guy bought one for a little over $2000 and ended up getting the box the 360 came in....and that's it. PayPal didn't do anything about it because the Seller had a receipt and confirmation the box had been received. All I can say is, if you're a buyer, make sure you check out the Seller's feedback history first and that includes checking each item he recevied feedback for. I know there are some people on there that create ebay accounts then buy a bunch of recipes for $.01-.10 to bump up there feedback then turn around and screw someone on a expensive purchase. It's sad.

Not knocking that list, but it seems like most of those non-exclusives could have already been played, finished and traded-in on the 360. You would think Sony could have gotten a couple of those games held back for a simultaneous release. Namely, Rainbow Six, Need for Speed, Marvel and COD3.
And as for Fight Night and Blazing Angels...wouldn't sequels have been more approriate? Full Auto came out at roughly the same time as Fight Night. I do realize that there are some additions to Fight Night on PS3, but isn't Round 4 right around the corner?

The launch titles are so lame, nothing screaming must have. The only game that i really want to play on the PS3 is Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I compared the screen shots with the Xbox360 and the Wii, PS3 has the best graphic. Now, i'm not sure what resolution was used to capture the screen shots, so there probably not much difference between the Xbox360 and PS3 version. The other game is CoD3, but it's available on the other consoles as well, so nothing special.
Again, i think i'll wait and see, buying a PS3 now and end up playing PS2 games on it or play BR movies not worth the cash. Seriously, i think the Wii probably generate a way better return in terms of game fun during the first month of launch than the PS3. I'm not saying that b/c i'm not camping out to get one. Hey, i think it will be difficult to find a Wii during launch week. Speaking of Wii, the thread is up to part 5!

Got to play on the PS3 at Target today. NBA and Motorstorm were the only demo's. I thought Motorstorm was good, but the motion control thing will definitely take some getting used to. I think one of the problems is the Target kiost setup. The way the controller is connected, it makes it very difficult to twist the controller. It also makes it so your face is about 10in from the screen, which sucks.
Has anyone played COD3 on the PS3 yet? I'd like to know about the framerate compared to the 360 version. I'd also like to know if it's got all the same multiplayer options.

:jawdrop:
Did those auctions come with a 100" HDTV, a kicking sound system, and 50 games too? I really hope those auctions were not for a PS3 console alone. That is just stupid crazy. I didn't even spend $9000 on my car.
I think both of those are examples of people bidding just to drive up the hype (as in, those sales won't go through, but it will artificially increase the perceived value for other auctions). I say this because there are 50 other completed auctions that have averaged around 2000, and they ended at roughly the same time as these two. So I'm calling shenanigans on these auctions (although, since I plan to sell my preorder, I can only hope they're real). I would think that the real test of these machines' ebay value will be Saturday, after everyone goes into stores on Friday and is told that they won't be able to buy a PS3 until March.

I would guess its a cooling issue. Having the system in a confined space would require some kind of fan, and to have said fan in with the "displayed" PS3 would be visually unappealing and could also lead to negative impressions and cause for over heating concerns.

LOL! But in all seriousness, I think a competetive game for a PS3 is a very very very bad idea! It just adds so much more pressure on an already stressful situation.
I finally got to play the offroad racing game for PS3, but I as left completely underwhelmed. The guys behind me were amazed though every time I crashed the car at the detail of the parts flying off the vehicle and yelled "look at the graphics man!", but it didn't really do anything for me.
Actually there seemed to be slowdown and a lot of motion blur (to cover it up). Normally I couldn't give a shit about graphics, but this is a $600 system, so I only expect the best. So seeing how there is still slowdown was unexpected. Having played a game on it, it didn't look all that better than a 360 game (which is a better buy for the price IMO)

Weren't there muggings when the 360 launched? I'd say "incidents" are almost surely guaranteed, but I'm not expecting anyone to actually kill for it. Then again, someone got killed here in Tulsa a few months ago for cutting in line at a taco stand, so anything's possible.

I played this tonight at Target after someone let me know they had set up the demo kiosk earlier. I thought Motorstorm looked good I tried the desert race stage (choice on the right) It took a little bit to get used to the six axis control (but a lot of this was Targets stupid 6" plastic arm confining the controller). In some parts of the country there could be some real problems. I see these boards where people talk about camping out the night before for Black Friday stuff, these are mothers and fathers and even grandparents. So it's not that far fetched to think that these same people might camp out for a PS3 for their kids. And when people see the PS3, ALOT of people see $$$, myself included.
I'm planning this whole thing out pretty carefully, there's 3 stores in town that i will NOT be camping at, just because i don't think it's safe. I don't even think it's gonna be completely safe at the store i'm planning on going to. Think of all the pissed off people who waited who are not going to get one. They're the ones you have to watch for.
Hey, if Sony put out enough players it wouldn't be a problem. Or if Ebay never existed there wouldn't be this type of frenzy. But, that's the way things are, and i hope people are humane enough not to do something stupid.

I read that best buy is handing out tickets 11pm on Thursday.
2 questions.
1. What time do you think people will start lining up outside bestbuy.
2. If I get a ticket at 11 pm, does that mean I can go home and come back in the morning and pick it up when they open?

Where'd you read this? This type of practice would surely encourage more people to start going out Wednesday afternoon/night instead of Thursday morning/afternoon.
I was planning on going to BB by Thursday afternoon....think this'll be too late? I've never done this type of thing before.

my chances of getting a PS3 have fallen into the gutter with all these stores doing the raffle stuff. I think I'm just going to wait until some store online starts taking orders for these now. I just can't see waiting in line for awhile and have some guy show up and hour or 2 after me get one while I get the shaft.

Went by my Target today and asked about their shipment and they said that they will be getting less PS3's at launch then they got 360's which means it's going to be less than 14 he told me. Also he told me that they won't be letting people camp out because the cops will be kicking everyone out, and that people could start lining up around 5 a.m. on Friday. I don't think i'm gonna bother going to that store now.

I had a dream last night. I had a dream in which 400,000 people bought PS3s. in the dream most of the 400,000 people who ignorantly bought these for a huge markup opened up their boxes and removed everything contained inside. in my dream they anxiously hooked everything up and turned it on. after about 5 minutes of on time it happened - the PS3 logged into the mothership and caused a nationwide lockup. no one could get their PS3s to do anything. in my dream they all tried, they pulled plugs, they emailed people, they called anyone who would listen but no one was there. nothing could stop this mass shutdown. it was the end, the end of it all. the world will never be the same. mass hysteria set in. they turned to the streets. people were dying. there were bodies everywhere. then after a moment of reason, they all realized they should have bought a Nintendo.
no more eating burritos and then going to bed for me. ;)

Very In-depth 3-part look at Sony's online service for the PS3: http://www.innerbits.com/blog/2006/11/06/analysis-of-the-ps3-online/
Here are the sections I found the most interesting:
EDI is not just a place for game developers to regurgitate old titles with slightly retooled graphics, nor just a dumping ground for casual games. It is a honest attempt at creating a space for indie games in the console world. EDI has been quietly working with a number of teams to come out with smaller scale games which would benefit from such an approach (“about 40” exclusive titles). One has to only look as far as David Jaffe’s latest offering to contemplate the possibilities of such a system. Yes, Sony still has a long way to go to fulfill the potential of EDI, but what we’ve seen so far is very promising.
The reality is that the friend’s list support that Sony have provided in their libraries is terrible. From within a game, you are notified when your friends sign on and sign off (with a nice translucent overlay)…and that’s about it. Developers have no way of interfacing with this list in any useful manner. You can’t find out if your friends are watching a movie, surfing the net or playing another game. If you send them an invite, you have to hope they sign on to the same game you’re playing before they’ll even see it. Furthermore, there is currently no functionality to even “accept” the invite. It’s just a message to come join a game; it won’t actually take you to the game. Developers have to deal with that problem themselves.
Currently, there is also no default headset support, no voice support on the PS3. This feature has been a TRC requirement for every online game for the Xbox. Let me rephrase that: since the launch of Xbox Live (over 4 years ago), every online game released had to support voice chat. And of course, Microsoft provided libraries. If developers want to support voice chat on the PS3 right now, they have to implement it themselves.
As a relevant example, SCEA had apparently developed a complete online solution for the PS3 (to put it on par with Xbox Live for multiplayer support, ranking, achievements, etc). Sony Japan reportedly came in and cancelled the whole thing, simply saying, “no, you have to use the libraries we’ve put together”.
The lack of a consistent system to offer multiplayer support will lead to vastly different levels of quality across different games. In comparison, Microsoft has only ever allowed one publisher to handle their own multiplayer service on Xbox Live: EA. And judging by how poorly consumers are responding to EA’s online support, EA is paying a steep price for its arrogant belief that they can always do better.

Sony sold 88,400 PS3s in Japan in 2 days: publisher
Mon Nov 13, 5:39 AM ET
TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news). sold 88,400 units of its PlayStation 3 game console in the first two days after the launch in Japan, leaving most stores without any stock, video game magazine publisher Enterbrain said on Monday.
Sony started selling the latest version of its blockbuster game console in Japan on Saturday, and all indications point to a strong start. Sony plans to have the PS3 on shelves in North America on November 17, followed by a European launch in March.
According to Enterbrain, Sony sold 88,400 units combined on Saturday and Sunday, depleting stocks at most electronics retailers that were able to get their hands on a limited supply of the console.
Sony was able to ship only 100,000 units for the launch after a glitch in blue laser diode production disrupted its output plans.
An official at Enterbrain said the sales figure could be interpreted as a promising start for the PS3, with thousands of game fans queuing for hours at electronics stores in Tokyo over the weekend to be among the first to play PS3 games.
The PS3 is up against Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360, which has been on sale for the past year, and Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s upcoming Wii game console, which is scheduled to go on sale on November 19 in the United States and December 2 in Japan.
Enterbrain said that Ridge Racer 7 and Mobile Suit Gundam: Target in Sight, both from Namco Bandai Holdings, were the top two selling games at about 30,000 units each.
The basic model of the PS3, equipped with a 20-gigabyte hard disk drive, sells for 49,980 yen ($425), while a more advanced 60-gigabyte version is retailing for about 60,000 yen.
Of the total sold so far in Japan, Enterbrain said 54,600, or about 62 percent, were of the more advanced model.
So, I wonder if this is a disappointment since this wasn't a total sell out after 2 days?
Merrill Lynch Predicts Massive PS3 Losses, Downgrades Sony
The Japanese arm of analyst and financial firm Merrill Lynch has revised down Sony's forecast and cut its target share price, in anticipation of the launch of the company's PlayStation 3 next-gen console.
Japanese news service FISCO has reported that the company's target share prices of Sony has fallen from Ą4,700 to Ą4,000 (from $40.05 down to $34.09). In addition, Merrill Lynch is estimating a multi-billion dollar operating loss for Sony based on its PlayStation 3 launch.
The group has said it expects Sony to lose a total of Ą738.9 billion ($6.3 billion) over the next 5 years based on manufacturing and sales costs of the PlayStation 3, which includes complex elements in both its CPU and optical drive arenas.
It was Merrill Lynch estimates that earlier this year described the console as an “expensive and difficult-to-manufacture product” based on the “problem points” of the the Cell processor and Blu-ray disc drive, and put manufacturing costs of the console at around $800 at launch, falling to $320 over the following three years.
That followed more estimates from the company that suggested the PlayStation 3 would not be launched until late 2006 in Japan and early 2007 in North America. Sony refuted the comments at the time, as it was still aiming for a spring 2006 launch. Though both of these regions will be seeing the launch of the console over the coming week, the European PS3 launch has been delayed into early 2007.

They had the display up at our Target but it was inactive. I did get to finally handle the new Dual Shock. I like the new trigger-style L2/R2 buttons, and it's the smoothest feeling trigger button I've felt on a first-party controller. I still prefer the 360 controller overall, but this is a nice compromise between that controller and the PS2 dual shock.

Depends on how you look at it. I thought they were only shipping 80,000? So if there were 100,000 like the article says, then there are stll 12,000 still unaccounted for. Pretty dissappointing I would say considering they launched with a quarter of what the 360 did, which sold out in minutes here.

It all depends on how many end up selling vs. how many decide to keep it once it is in their hands. I bet the bulk of them go in the first couple weeks, making prices rise the further we get to Christmas.

Well if you assume they shipped 100,000 on the nose(from the article above) that leaves 11,600 remaining unsold. If those are all premium, then you get a 75% / 25% ratio, closer to the 80% figure.
I also find it hilarious that all of a sudden with the PS3 launch Sony is using "sold" numbers yet to combat the high DS numbers they use "shipped" numbers.
GameStop not getting enough PS3s to fill preorders
Retailer's launch allocations not expected to cover original batch of reservations; employees "asked" to wait until second shipment to buy systems.
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot
Posted Nov 13, 2006 8:28 pm GMT
Last month, retailer GameStop began accepting "limited" preorders for the PlayStation 3, asking customers to put down $100 in advance for the system, with a modest expectation of eight units per store in most cases. Now it appears the largest gaming specialty chain in North America won't be receiving even that many systems.
A GameStop representative told GameSpot today that the company received launch allocation numbers from Sony, and that it won't be able to fill its existing PS3 preorders.
"We are beginning to notify our customers that our initial shipment of PS3 systems will not be what we expected," the representative said. "As this is not an ideal situation, we are asking employees to wait to purchase systems until the second shipment. We are anticipating having systems to cover reservations before Christmas."
For launch day, preorders will be filled in the order they were received, and those who had a preorder but are denied a system on day one will receive something for their troubles. GameStop will give those unfortunate customers (as well as unfortunate employees) a free used game or DVD valued at $19.99 or less when they eventually wind up purchasing the system.
Those who reserved a system won't need to wait long to find out if they can expect a system on launch day. Starting tomorrow, customers who preordered a PS3 will be contacted personally by phone and updated on the status of their reservation, the rep said.
And while it might be a non-issue considering the clamor for consumers to get their hands on the coveted systems, GameStop is also asking anyone with a confirmed preorder to pick their systems up by Saturday evening.

I'd really like to know how the Blu-Ray player stacks up compared to a stand-alone.
I'd personally like to go HD-DVD.. but if I was to get a new game system it'd have to be PS3 over Xbox 360 1,000 to 1. And now that I think about it.. the PS3 Lite is $100 cheaper than the Xbox 360 + HD-DVD drive.

I'm all about posting articles on Sony online today. :)
http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/745/745425p1.html
US, November 12, 2006 - With the PlayStation 3, Sony has at last brought a unified online experience to the PlayStation platform, with a single login, friend list, and shopping point common to most games. While we already detailed the online gameplay experience through Ridge Racer 7 (be sure and check out our Ridge media page for some burning online gameplay videos), we're sure you're concerned about how smoothly the PlayStation Store experience is, especially since you'll likely be spending lots of cash on game and item downloads once (most likely far, far in the future) you've gotten hold of your own system.
You've seen all the attractive screens showing the gorgeous interface that looks like a clear step up from Microsoft's Xbox 360 marketplace interface. The PlayStation Store is indeed easy on the eyes, especially if you've got a high-def television. Sony picked an attractive color theme and font set, making the store look professional (warning: this could be a trick to make you spend more money on useless Genji items!).
In addition to just looking nice, the layout of the shop is easy to understand. The main shopping window is on the left side of the screen. In its current form, it's split into four sections: new games, containing downloads of game demos and full games; game archives, containing downloads of classic titles; add-on items, consisting of micro-transaction items for games; and video, consisting of game and movie trailers. To the right of the shopping window is a what's-new section, which lists recently added content, and a focus section, which highlights a single piece of content.
There isn't really much to access under these headings at this point. At the time of publication, the PlayStation Store had the following items:
New Games
Mainichi Issho (free)
Ridge Racer 7 Demo (free)
Blast Factor Demo (free)
Blast Factor (840 yen)
Game Archives
Nothing available yet
Bonus Items
Genji item (free)
Video
Gran Turismo HD TGS trailer (free)
Afrika TGS trailer (free)
Genji movie (free)
007 Casino Royal movie trailer (free)
Open Season movie trailer (free)
Blu-ray disc trailers (free)
The game archives will probably be empty until later this month, when Sony adds the first PlayStation downloads for the PSP. Also, the Blu-ray disc trailers item is actually a folder which houses six downloadable Blu-ray disc trailers.
Click on an item, and you're taken to a full screen view detailing the content and pricing information. This screen gives a detailed description of what exactly it is that you're downloading, along with compatible resolutions, space required for the download and for saving (if you're downloading a game) and any warning messages.
In the case of free content, this screen houses a download button. Click on this, and after selecting the location for your download, the download starts up immediately. Alas, our worst fears (second only to the threat of nuclear annihilation from North Korea) have been realized: the PS3, like the early Xbox 360, can't multitask downloads. You're stuck waiting for the download to finish before you can take control of your system. Thankfully, the network was pretty fast for the few downloads we made, with a 200 megabyte download taking less than a minute. For game content, the PS3 also goes through an automatic installation process which takes just a few seconds. Still, we hope a download list is on the cards for the next firmware update.
If you're dealing with paid content, the download button is replaced with a button for placing the content in your shopping cart. Click on it, and you're taken to your shopping cart screen, which lists all the items you have in your cart, the total bill, and the amount of money you'll have remaining in your wallet following purchase. You can continue shopping, or proceed to checkout from here.
We tested out the paid shopping experience with the single paid item currently in the PlayStation Store, Blast Factor. Following the shopping cart screen, we attempted to purchase the item, but the shop warned that the IGN wallet was empty and asked if we'd like to add charge. Currently, charging can be achieved exclusively through credit card, and it has to be a Japanese credit card at that. Other options, including gift certificate and pre-paid card code entry, will presumably be added when such products are available for purchase.
The overall flow of the shopping experience at the PlayStation Store is smooth. There's some concern that the interface won't be able to cope with the oceans of content that will become available throughout the system's life. However, a flexible folder structure for the main shopping screen should ensure that Sony will be able to organize its content in various ways.
One of the nice things about the PlayStation Store, at least for those worried about overspending, is that it sends e-mails to you whenever you download anything. Following your download, you get a receipt sent to the e-mail that you specified when registering your PlayStation Network account. The receipt lists the items that you purchased, the purchase amount, and the amount of money remaining in your wallet. Of course, you can also keep track of all this via an option on the cross media bar that keeps track of your purchase history.
Despite smooth process to checkout, the PlayStation Store interface does have some big problems at this point. Most prominent is its unresponsiveness. Every button press makes the interface pause for a brief moment as it loads up new header images. Moving between the few items currently available was annoying enough; we can't imagine what will happen when the content starts filling up.
The store, which runs as a webpage using the PS3's web browser, seems more optimized at this point for the mouse than for controller use, something that will cause a problem for most PS3 owners. It's true that the analogue stick can be used to move a pointer around like a mouse, but this works as poorly as it has in previous console-based browsers. Your best bet for navigation is to use the d-pad, but with the current shopping interface, this occasionally requires scrolling through text descriptions, and guessing at which button you should push due to icons not lining up correctly.
A few other issues seem like mere oversights rather than problematic design decisions. The shop currently doesn't mark which items you've already downloaded. We kept on downloading the same Blast Factor demo over and over again. At least the store was smart enough to overwrite the original demo rather than creating multiple copies.
We've posted a video of the PlayStation Store in action. Unfortunately, we had to reduce the output resolution of the PS3 to standard def in order to capture the video. The store's content is easier to access when viewed in at least 720p, so keep in mind that you're not getting a look at the optimized shopping experience that you'll have if you have a high def television.

I saw NBA 07 at Target, but I thought the graphics looked weird. I'm not saying the PS3 won't provide graphically, but these people looked very very plastic-y. I don't know, I just wasn't feeling it. Also while waiting to play Motostorm it seemed to take longer to load than I had expected.

ok, this whole "going to get a PS3 no matter what" stuff is hitting new lows. I was out earlier picking up some subs for dinner and I overheard a few guys planning on staking out some stores starting tonight to watch for the PS3 shipments to arrive. the plan is to steal them off the truck to sell on ebay. then one of the guys said if that doesn't work he's going to pretend he's handicapped to try to cut in line or whatever. I guess he secured some crutches or a wheelchair or something. he said he should be able to walk right up to the front because who's going to want to fight a handicapped person.
are people really this desperate to make some quick money?

Hmph. Shows what you know. Those are just rabid Ridge Racer fans.
You know, if I had gotten in a pre-order for $100 and Gamestop called to tell me that that I would not get a system at launch, I'd be heading down to get my $100 back.
And that's entirely your choice. Gamestop doesn't hold people's money against their will.
I cannot fathom the point of a pre-order that does not guarantee a system. I know this isn't new, but I still cannot wrap my brain around it.
Well, when Sony tells Gamestop "You're getting X amount of systems" and then the week of the launch they say "You're actually getting 40% less than that," whose fault do you think it is? I wouldn't say Gamestop's.

I got to play a PS3 last night at Best Buy. First of all that controller is LIGHT! But I liked the trigger L2/R2 buttons (welcome to 1999 Sony). I still hope they release a PS2 adapter for these.. I'm so sick of having to swap out the shitty Logitech controller every time one of the buttons wears out. Well, all they had was basketball and it took like three minutes to actually get to the demo.. I don't think that was bad load time.. just fifty freaking logos to sit through. So um.. basketball.. I've got nothing.

And that's entirely your choice. Gamestop doesn't hold people's money against their will.
I never said they did. But if I give a store $100 to reserve a system and they take it, I expect the system. If that doesn't happen, no reason to give them the money.
Well, when Sony tells Gamestop "You're getting X amount of systems" and then the week of the launch they say "You're actually getting 40% less than that," whose fault do you think it is? I wouldn't say Gamestop's.
Two things.
1) Gamestop has always said that a pre-order does not guarantee a system/game/whatever. That is the process I don't understand. They had the same problem with the 360.
2) I don't really care about what's going on between Sony and Gamestop. These two businesses need to figure this out between them, not yank the consumer around. If Gamestop is going to institute a $100 pre-order system throughout their stores, they better be DAMN sure they are going to get enough consoles to cover it. If there is any chance that won't happen, they shouldn't have rolled out the system. It sucks that Sony cut the shipments (but honestly, none of us seem too shocked by the news - how come Gamestop was so surprised?) but Gamestop apparently had no problems rolling out pre-orders and taking people's money.

Exactly. Shuffle the numbers around if need be. They have thousands of customers that already put down money on the system. Shaft the K-marts & mom & pop stores of the world if you have to, guarantee them a higher quantity the next shipment. Then by the third shipment everything is peachy.

How is that going to work? Sony or the store will have records of the serial numbers. They could easily track down the stolen consoles that way.

I would never fight a handicapped person, but I would have no problem telling the asshat to wait in line like everyone else, and if he doesn't comply, I would call security and let them deal with him.

Exactly. I fault Sony for not doing that. If you tell the gamestores they will get a set amount, knowing they will take money from customers for that number of systems, you need to follow through on your word and make sure that they get that number of systems by pulling from other stores allotments if need be.
I hope those that got shafted that actually wanted the system to play just buy a 360 or Wii and pass on the PS3. But the majority are probably eBay hoarders anyway so its a moot point.
PlayStation 3 Has Compatibility Problems with PS2 Games
05:48 PM, November 14th 2006
by News Staff
Shortly after the Japanese launch of its next-generation console, Sony already faces the first problems. Fortunately enough, these are not hardware deficiencies. They are compatibility problems with the games created for PlayStation 2. The Japanese company admitted today that there are indeed games that do not function properly on PlayStation 3.
Sony officials have not specified the number of games that do not work nor have they specified which games are incompatible, but according to information published by Sankei, Final Fantasy and Gran Turismo are among them. Sankei also estimates the number of affected games at about 200.
The compatibility issue affects graphics in some of the games and causes audio difficulties in others.
Sony has stated that it will try to remedy these problems by posting upgrades online, but company officials have refused to specify the number or titles of the problem-games, BBC News informs.
Problems surfacing immediately after a launch are not something new in the world of consoles. Last year, after Microsoft launched Xbox 360, there were numerous complaints from customers relating to the overheating of the source, which led to dysfunctions.
Sony has always said that PlayStation 3 will be perfectly compatible with PS 2 titles, PS 2 being the market leader right now. As a matter of fact, compatibility was one of the aces Sony hoped to win the console war with, which has reached a new level with this latest launch in Japan.
PlayStation 3, which at this moment has already claimed the title of most technically advanced console, should have been launched in March 2006. Sony was forced to postpone the event to November 2006, promising a simultaneous launch in Japan, the US and Europe as a compensation. Technical problems regarding the Blu-Ray units unfortunately caused another change of plan and Sony had to limit itself to Japan and the US, rescheduling the European launch for March 2007.
Sony also had to reduce the number of units it intended to deliver along with the introduction of PS 3, cutting down the number to 100,000 units for Japan and 400,000 for the US.
And all these incidents would be acceptable had Sony not entangled itself in a life and death battle with Microsoft and Nintendo. Microsoft launched Xbox 360 last year and has had reasonable results so far. Nevertheless, it hasn’t had significant sales in Japan, a market considered to be loyal to PlayStation, customers choosing to wait for PlayStation 3.
One reason the Japanese are interested in PS 3 is precisely its compatibility with PS 2 games.
In fact, Sony should speed up the process of solving the compatibility problems as US citizens will be introduced to PlayStation 3 very soon, on the 17th of November.
Nintendo will launch its Nintendo Wii console in the United States on November 19th, and the company hopes to deliver as many as 4 million units by the end of the year.
Unlike Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii is the least advanced as far as technology is concerned, but also the cheapest. The price announced for a Nintendo Wii is $250. Besides its price, the other argument Nintendo hopes to seduce customers with is the new controller, designed to resemble a remote-control.
The pre-order campaign that GameStop started last month for Nintendo and PlayStation 3 ended the very day it had begun. Therefore Sony has no reasons to worry yet, because the 400,000 consoles that it will deliver to the US have certainly been bought already. What will happen until the end of the year remains to be seen.

Super Target (Mishawaka, IN) on launch day will have 8 - $599 PS3 and 4 - $499 PS3. The launch will be first come first serve. Target will be handing out tickets at either 5:00 am or 7:00 am depending on who I talked to. Once you have the ticket you can leave and come back to pick up your PS3 when they open.
Hope this helps anyone who lives in the area.

Huge Decrease of launch consoles for U.S.?
Analyst: 'Battle Royale' To See 150-200k PS3s For Launch?
In his latest interactive entertainment notes, Lazard Capital Markets' Colin Sebastian has made his predictions on the 'battle royale' set to take place this week as the Wii and PS3 see their official US lanches.
Says Sebastian, "This week represents a significant milestone in the interactive entertainment universe," though, he hastens to add, "the significance of the launches for the software publishers is largely symbolic, as the new consoles will not likely be meaningful drivers of software sales until later next year when we expect the installed bases of the PS3 and Wii to reach more critical mass."
Still, "excitement surrounding the hardware launches backed by significant marketing budgets from Microsoft (Xbox 360), Sony (PS3 and PSP) and Nintendo (Wii and DS) – should benefit overall industry trends through the holiday."
On retailers' struggles to secure and supply a continuous flow of hardware, Sebastian adds that Lazard continues to expect shortages for most stores: "Our channel checks with retailers indicate that there is strong interest in both the PS3 and Wii; most stores sold out of pre-orders quickly."
"We expect Sony to deliver 150-200k units to stores in the United States for the launch; consumers without pre-orders may find it difficult to locate an available system. We estimate sales of approximately 750k PS3s domestically by year-end. We expect a more robust launch from Nintendo, with at least 1.2 million units sold in the U.S. and up to four million units shipped worldwide by year-end."
"Due to the limited initial installed base of the platforms, we believe the financial impact over the holiday period will be more significant for hardware manufacturers and video game retailers (such as GameStop) than for software publishers."
In addition to predicting a strong push for Xbox 360 products due to a shortage in PS3 supply, Sebastian also says the newly launched consoles may not have as significant an impact on holiday sales.
He adds: "We expect less than 15% of software sales to come from the PS3 and Wii this holiday; the more numerous Xbox 360, PS2 and handheld platforms (DS and PSP) remain key drivers of growth," though, he predicts, "this fifth major platform transition is likely to be the largest product launch in the industry’s history."

Touchy area. Confirmations should be required, but the deposit is intended to weed out the deadest-beats. I'd sure hate some punk kid coming in ahead of me and putting his name down with no down payment while I have the full amount ready to go and, at launch, he still hasn't got the funds to pay for his and I'm just SOL because I was denied previously. Poor tie-in ratio lends more weight to 'grey market' sales theory
Enterbrain, publisher of Famitsu, has revealed the the tie-in ratio of software to PlayStation 3 sales is 0.98 – less than one game per console.
The figure suggests that a portion of the 88,400 units sold were bought with the intention of selling on as part of the 'grey market', the unofficial channel for second hand machines via internet auctions and retail stores, which label the stock as 'used'.
As previously reported, Namco Bandai's Mobile Suit Gundam and Ridge Racer 7 were the top-selling titles, clocking up sales of around 30,000 units each.
Looks like Ebay is the main culprit! ;)

Shock in store for gamers over price of PS3 - report
Ellie Gibson 09:07 14/11/2006
Survey says PS2 fans are more loyal than GameCube owners
A new report by analyst Compete has revealed that almost half of US consumers considering the purchase of a PS3 are in for a surprise when it comes to the console's price.
The report, which surveyed active current gen console gamers during the month of October, found that 48 per cent of those thinking about buying a PS3 thought it would cost under US $300.
Almost 60 per cent of respondents in the same category said they thought the cost was too high on being told the real price (US $499 / $599 for the 20GB / 60GB versions). Of all those surveyed, 73 per cent said they think the price is too expensive.
Around 63 per cent of PlayStation 2 owners say they may pick up a PS3 - but the figure is lower for Nintendo's new console, with just 39 per cent of GameCube owners considering a Wii purchase. Almost the same number - 40 per cent - of those who bought a GameCube may buy a PS3 this time around.
Compete calculated the demand for consoles amongst US consumers
using data from online retailers, and found that an average of around 418,000 people show an interest in the Xbox 360 each month. Demand for PS3 exceeded that for Xbox 360 for the first time in September, with the Wii repeating the feat in October. At present, with the North American launch of the console just days away, demand is highest for the PlayStation 3.
How could almost half the people surveyed not know about the actual cost of a PS3? You don't have to be an Internet geek to do a Google News search and find out the actual price!

After looking at all the comparison pics I really still don't know which people are claiming is better by showing them. When you say "which one looks better now", which one are you claiming is better? To me the differences look negligable at best. The PS3 shots may look slightly better due to the higher res but not nearly enough to justify thier "True HD" statements. Plus, Ridge Racer is/was a launch game for each system so it's really not a good game to use for graphical capability of either one.

What makes it worse is that the employees won't tell people that they're going to get booted anyway, or that they'll only have 4 systems on the launch day, or whatever. They just let them sit there and suffer.

Right now I'm in a pretty small town (population about 20,000) and I was absolutely shocked to see three tents at a Best Buy with like six people out in front. I honestly thought I could have shown up late Thursday evening around midnight (which I was planning to do) and easily have gotten one.

Bingo. Same thing happened at the Best Buy I waited at for a 360. Before the manager left for the night before he told us exactly how many they had and put a sign on the door. 26 systems and there were still about 70-80 people waiting taking their chances on false hope.

They could be hoping for stupid manager like the one at the (Southfield, MI) Best Buy who basically said "screw you" to those of us who had waited overnight for the 360 and just started handing out tickets to anyone who was able to run up and get close to him.

From the sounds of things, Im gonna show up Thursday morning and everywhere will be packed. Ill then say o well, and start shopping for the rest of my stuff for my home theater project (which is why i was gonna ebay a PS3, I'll still have enough dough but anyway). Then Ill try to go to a store with no line structure and do a mad dash Mike Alstott run to the PS3 when they open. if that doesnt work, I guess Ill have more saving to do to pay off the few hundreds of dollars that I dont have in cash for my HT.

Following the announcement that the PlayStation 3 would launch in Hong Kong and Taiwan on November 17th, the same day as the North American launch, an article on technology website DigiTimes suggests that only 500 units of the console will be available on day one.
The information reportedly comes from the Taiwanese branch of Sony Computer Entertainment Hong Kong (SCEH), which is organizing a launch ceremony in downtown Taipei where 150 consoles will be made available. An additional 350 units are to be sold through thirty-five selected retail outlets – each getting only ten units each. These include seven Tsann Kuen electronics stores, eight Fnac chain stores and Sony’s own franchise stores.
As previously announced, only the larger 60GB version of the console will be launched initially, with the 20GB version due in December. The 60GB version will be priced at TW$17,980 ($545) and the 20GB version at TW$14,980 ($454).
The news follows suggestions yesterday from an analyst at Lazard Capital Markets that Sony’s day one allocations for the PlayStation 3 in North America could be as low as 150,000 to 200,000 units. Proportional to the size of its market, the Taiwanese allocation would be generally comparable to these figures.

Ziff Davis To Discontinue U.S. Official PlayStation Magazine
U.S. game magazine (EGM, Games For Windows) and website (1UP.com) firm the Ziff Davis Game Group has announced that it will discontinue publication of the Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine after the January 2007 issue.
A statement from the company explains: "The Game Group is laser-focused on continuing to expand its rapidly growing digital media presence and on further strengthening its multiplatform properties and powerful integrated network. As such, the Game Group has determined that Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine, a property licensed from Sony Computer Entertainment America and limited to print, no longer fits its strategic vision."
According to the firm, Sony Computer Entertainment America will remain a key content and marketing partner for Ziff Davis Game Group, which will cover SCEA's PlayStation 3 and first-party games extensively across all of its media outlets, including EGM, 1UP.com, and GameVideos.com. The Game Group editorial team will also "work closely with SCEA in the development of digital content for the PlayStation Network, accessible only through the PS3."
Due to the long-term decline in the magazine advertising market, Ziff Davis has been gradually transitioning away from print for some time, aggressively building up 1UP.com as its central website portal. The company, which has previously closed magazines including XBN and GMR, most recently posted a quarterly loss of $0.5 million for its game division, citing "a decline in print advertising and circulation revenues", partially offset by online revenue increases.
Scott McCarthy, President of Ziff Davis Game Group, explanied of the overall move: "The powerful online capabilities of the exciting PlayStation 3, coupled with ever- increasing broadband penetration in the U.S., allow for much more efficient distribution of game demos, videos, and trailers. With this next generation of game consoles, the days of having to bundle a disc with a magazine to distribute games-related content are over. And the disc has clearly been a major driver for consumer interest in premium-priced, platform-specific magazines in the past, when the magazine disc was the only way gamers could get such content."

Oh man, I need to swing by there and take some pics. That particular Best Buy gets a TON of traffic and has a very narrow sidewalk. I'm talking 4 feet wide at the most, with the wall of the building and the curb as the edges. They have to be blocking pedestrians to be there.

well yea. I had pre-orders from 3 separate stores, but was told I had to cancel them (this was weeks after). It was never conveyed to me at the time that I could only have 1 pre-order per district
Since my gf was with me, we had one switched to her name. The other store said that they have enough to fill their pre-orders, but they didn't give me any specific information. I still don't know 100% if I will get both of them. I might have to make a call to their district manager to see WTF is going on with my second pre-order

Same with all the walmarts around me. One of them is only getting 3. It's certainly becoming clear that within the last week or so, almost every chain was told their allocation was being reduced, with many of these stores having already printed ads.
At this point, the only way I'd wait over 24 hours for this thing (which seems almost mandatory at this point) would be to eBay it, which is something I'm not interested in doing. It seems that finally my list of "reasons not to get one at launch" has overwhelmed my compulsive need to get everything the first day, which was really the only thing remaining on my "reasons to get one at launch" list. I will leave my pre-order at FYE stand until January, and then if I still don't have one, I'll get my deposit refunded and wait until I can walk into EB and spend my $400 in credit towards one.
Daryl
11-15-06, 02:29 PM
On a side note: has anyone given genuine thought to lining up now, and then when the line size equals the number of consoles available at that store - sell their spot for say $500? It seems like that would be a possibility at these huge launch stores and enable you to get a decent profit while decreasing your camping time.
Kocheese99

Well when i line up tomorrow, I will sell my Spot at any time for $500. Of course the later it gets the more money i'd want, but i would sell my spot for $700 up until the end probably.
Also if i'm extrememly lucky i could walk away with 3 ps3's by this time Friday. Of course lady luck would have to be on my side big time.

Well, at least only one of your pre-orders got cancelled. I pre-ordered at both a Gamestop and EB on 10/10 and went in not knowing about the 1 per household deal until I got a call from the DM that afternoon saying that he was cancelling one of my pre-orders but I would get to keep the other. I had no problems with that.
Then, this past week I get my CC statement and my deposit isn't on there. So, I call GameStop and the Manager tells me that my pre-order was cancelled on 10/10 due to duplicate pre-orders. I was pissed! Even though I was #6 in line I still felt good about my chances of getting one because this particular store was suppose to get 16. So, even if their shipment was cut in 1/2 I was still getting one. I got a hold of the DM who made the error and cancelled both and he's giving me his pre-order so I will be getting one Friday. It all works out for me in the end but had I not checked my CC statement they would have had one pissed off customer on Friday.
By the way KurrptSenate, I got the DS game yesterday. I'll leave you positive feedback. Thanks! :)

PlayStation 3 Gaming Consoles Are Selling for Reasonable Prices on Internet Auction Web Sites
TOKYO (AP) -- Sony's PlayStation 3 isn't living up to the hype -- at least on Japan's Internet auctions. The gaming consoles, which went on sale here Saturday, are fetching reasonable prices online, disappointing those who had hoped to make a quick profit by reselling the machines on the Internet.
Some of the 4,000 PlayStation 3 consoles listed on Yahoo Japan's auction site were downright bargains. Even systems with games included were going for about 60,000 yen ($510) for the most expensive model and 50,000 yen ($420) for the cheaper one. That's in line with Sony's suggested retail prices, minus the extra games.
In the U.S., where the PS3 goes on sale Friday, bidders on eBay have pushed up the price of PS3 preorders to $2,300 as of Wednesday.
The PlayStation 3 is facing off in a next-generation console war against Nintendo Co.'s Wii and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360. The Wii debuts on Sunday in the U.S, while the Xbox launched late last year.
Yahoo Japan spokesman Nobumitsu Iwaisaki said some PlayStation 3 bids were as high as 2.1 billion yen ($17.8 million), but those turned out to be jokes.
Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman Daisuke Nakata declined to comment on the auctions, saying the deals were unrelated to Sony's operations.
Hundreds of hard-core game fans had lined up at electronics stores, many from Friday night, to make sure they got one.
But some were clearly not buying it to play -- including those who marched immediately to a waiting van with the machines -- says Hirokazu Hamamura, president of Japanese game magazine publisher Enterbrain Inc.
"The Net auction is so popular these days, that's inevitable," he said. "There's even talk some are taking the machines overseas."
Although Sony had promised 100,000 PS3 machines in Japan on the first day, the count was more like 90,000, and the entire shipment virtually sold out, Hamamura said.
Sony has promised 400,000 machines for the U.S. launch.
A survey by Enterbrain of 3,500 game stores across Japan showed that 88,400 PS3 machines were sold in the first two days.
Sony Corp. has promised a million PS3 machines in Japan by the end of the year, and an additional million in the U.S., targeting a global shipment of 6 million by March 2007.

Aw mang. You may remember my earlier post about attending the PS3 preview event in NYC 2 weeks ago. This afternoon I got another email from Sony, saying that the first 50 people to respond would be invited to attend tomorrow's NYC launch party and be able to buy a PS3 at midnight. I didn't see the email until about 30 minutes after they sent it, but I replied anyway, even though I don't even really want a PS3. Well, I just got the response, and I'm in.
Now, the moral dilemma...like I said, I don't want a PS3. My first instinct is to eBay it. Pros: it could cover the entire cost of my Wii launch purchase (system + games + extra controllers). Cons: it's kind of skeevy. I could just keep the PS3. Pros: fun. Cons: 600 freakin' dollars.
I'm leaning towards eBay. Don't kill me!

Don't know if this is old news but:
New Debacle for Sony
In the latest embarrassment to strike Sony Corp., the company acknowledged today (Wednesday) that many games designed for the original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 consoles are not compatible with PlayStation 3. News of the problem follows the rash of bad publicity over production delays involving the device, consumer hesitancy over the company's Blu-ray high-definition DVD devices, and especially a recall of laptop batteries that the company had manufactured. Sony had been hoping that the hugely hyped Casino Royale, due out this weekend, would produce revenue to offset the earlier ordeals. Sony managers were in London Tuesday to demonstrate how they planned to integrate the marketing of their products with the new film. Later in the day they attended the premiere of the movie at the Odeon Leicester Square theater -- along with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.
