Tom Cruise to run United Artists
This might seem like the biggest joke you've ever heard (Even I'm still laughing about it), but this is no joke. Tom Cruise and his producing partner Paula Wagner are set to run United Artists.
Think I'm still joking? Read it and weep.
He'll be fine until he makes the next Heaven's Gate, but once that happens, then may God have mercy on his soul.

My first thought was this is nuts but, at least in this article http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/...ruise-ua_x.htm, it sounds like it was pretty much already driven into the ground, so there may not be much to lose (other than lots of money of course).
United Artists has been virtually mothballed for several years, although the studio's logo will appear on the latest James Bond film, Casino Royale, due out in two weeks.
Most recently, UA had been used to acquire or produce low-budget independent films.
But under Cruise and Wagner, the studio is free to make $100 million action films starring Cruise, as well as lower budget fare, MGM said.
"It really depends on what they as the creative executives want to produce," Sands said. "It's a real studio that we are reinventing."

Oh sweet irony Groucho always knows what to say...
On another note, Cruise has been a producer/executive producer for some interesting movies including The Others, Narc, and Shattered Glass, so I suspect we'll just see more of the same stuff just under a different label.

I don't get the response here. Cruise has always had pretty good instincts in choosing projects in his career. I think it's a pretty smart move personally.

The last thing I remember seeing with the United Artists logo was Jeepers Creepers 2, so it's not like the brand was exactly in the best of shape regardless of what Cruise does with it.

Actually, the last movies to have the UA logo were all independent films. They were Saved!, Capote, and Art School Confidential (the last two were done in conjunction with Sony Pictures Classics).
As funny as I still find this predicament, I'm willing to see what Cruise does with UA. He might make some good choices. Love him or hate him, you have to admit, he's a good producer. I just don't know if he can run this studio, as I feel my instinct will be right that he will falter in this high position of power.

5 posts to get to a scientology refrence? You guys are slipping.
At this point, he can do no right. He's taking over a failing movie studio, not annexing Poland.
I'm still not sure why there's this building social hatred towards the man.

The popular, cocksucking approach to life (or art) is NEVER as entertaining, fun, and lively. Tom Cruise has become an ACT! He is one of those consistantly enjoyable celebrities. Saying what he has to say. Inciting emotion whenever he can.
Cruise is out to make a tangible difference! Producing awesome movies. Using the system and traditional convention to make some outstanding stuff. It'll certainly be interesting to see what he puts out.
Maybe someday I'll put on some lipstick, a matching dress, and cross paths with this cool motherfucker.
Goodnight for another few months.

I think Tom Cruise is a great decision-maker. If he chooses scripts the way he chooses scripts, I'm sure several good movies will come out under the banner.

These responses sound like UA announced it would be run by Eddie Murphy and Danny DeVito.

This really isn't a big deal imo. It gets cruise a positive headline more than anything. He's been co-producing movies for awhile now, most of which have turned out pretty good. It's not like UA is the next Dreamworks or anything.
