me and my friend were arguing over the correct phonetic way of pronouncing the new Brad Pitt movie...is it pronounced:

(Babel)Bay-bull

or

(Babel) Bab-ble

if someone can make this into a poll,it'd be great?!post ur opinions!

Another vote for the second pronounciation. I've personally never heard anyone pronounce it "bay-ble"

Maybe it's an American/British thing. I've really only ever heard the word "Babel" used in two different contexts that I can think of, either in relation to "The Tower of Babel" or "Babel Fish". Whenever I've heard people talk about the "Tower of Babel" it's always been pronounced "babble" but on the Hitchhiker's Guide movie and radio show, they pronounce "Babel Fish" like "baybul".

Does anyone else see the irony in asking how to pronounce Babel (or the fact that we can't agree on how to pronounce it)?

It's pronounced "Bah-bull". It's where we get the word "babble" from, from the middle english pronunciation. "Bay-bull" is just a popular usage rationalisation; fuck popular usage.

Do you say "bay-bull-on" when you mean Babylon? They're the same place. If you want to get into the original Akkadian, it's named Bab-Ilu.

No rocket science here, just people trying to make an exonym when they don't want to admit they're pronouncing the name incorrectly.

I've never met a STAR TREK fan in my life who pronounced the title to the episode where we meet Spock's parents "Journey to Bab-ble"; definitely the first pronunciation.

Roeper and that other guy (and my wife also) pronounce it Bab-ble. I pronounce it Bay-Bull. At least now I know I'm not the only one.

FILMMAKER: "well, there's the thousands of years of pronouncing it "BAH-behl", and the overwhelming evidence of the fact that "BAH-behl" is how it's pronounced... but I'm not convinved, what do the Trekkies say?"

Next thing we'll have dictionaries accepting "nook-yoo-luhr" just because so many ignorant people say it...

History's choked with idiots, but Trekkies...them's smart people! Seriously, though, let's not get too hyperbolic with the "overwhelming evidence" claim...
