Movies that turned out to be way different than you thought?

Two that come to mind for me, right now, are: The Wizard (1989) and Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead.

When I first watched the Wizard, I thought it was going to be all video game playing, all the time, but it actually had a family storyline. With DTMTBD, I thought it was going to be a fun, mindless, goofy farce, not a coming of age movie, about a girl getting a job, to support her brothers and sisters.

Dead Presidents.

All the advertising for the movie made it look like it was a heist movie (Take a look at the DVD for an example), when the actual event only took up around 15% of the movie, while the rest of the flick was various other events, including the Vietnam War.

Thank goodness we've got that TV ratings system in place now so kids can scope out which movies contain the good stuff before hand, and these mistakes don't have to happen.

First thing I thought of. I still greatly enjoy the movie and the heist sequence is a thing of beauty.

Cold Creek Manor.....The trailer sold it as a ghost story. The movie was not. In the trailer, Sharon Stone's bed sheets move around, and I feel that we were meant to believe that it was spiritual in origin, but it turns out there was a snake in her bed, heh.

The Aviator comes to mind. Because I had no idea who Howard Hughes was.

Dr. Venture made the same mistake. He thought it was a porno starring Dolly Parton.

I remember leaving the movie "Cool World" being bummed that the movie didnt turn out like i thought it was going to. I thought the story was going to be about Brad Pitt's character running the place or something and Gabriel Byrne was helping Kim Basinger's character escape.

Looking back, I wonder what people were smoking when they put ads for this movie on the back of science magazines when i was in 6th grade. "Wayne's World" made sense, but "Cool World"?

Fight Club. I thought it was just about some guys beating total strangers.

"Edward Scissorhands" -- the ads/trailers I saw made it out to be a wacky comedy in the vein of "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" and "Beetlejuice".

"Donnie Darko" -- not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't what I got (and that was a good thing).

Early viewers of Million Dollar Baby thought they were going to see "Rocky" with a girl.

Recently, I saw a trailer online for the The Shining and it looked like a really warm hearted comedy about Jack Nicholson falling in love with a single mother and her kid. I rented it and it was like a completely different film -- very dark and more like a horror movie.

Chuck and Buck. When I saw a trailer for the movie it seemed like an independent comedy about child hood friends. It turned out to be a movie about a homosexual with a boyhood crush on an old friend.

Super Troopers. I thought it would be a dumb comedy, somewhat worse than the latest offerings of Police Academy movies. It was actually much better than the trailers let on.

Fight Club. Just thought it was going to be a stupid little movie about a couple of guys who fight each other for fun.

No love for the Butterfly Effect?

Ashton Kutcher in a serious role. And he's good in it! My goodness! Hell has frozen over!

The one that springs to mind is The Thin Red Line. It came out the same year as Saving Private Ryan and I expected a similar type war movie. I came out of the theatre wondering what the hell I had just seen. It was only until it came out on DVD that I appreciated the movie for what it was - a narrative on the nature of man shot against the backdrop of WWII.
