View Full Version : CARS DVD Retailer Exclusives!

With Cars being released to DVD on November 7th, I decided to start an official thread, to post Retailer Exclusives for this release.

As of now, I know of only one Retailer Exclusive for the U.S.

Wal-Mart will have an Exclusive Bonus DVD, packaged side by side, with Cars.

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5280787

From what I can tell, this is what is included:

The Making of "Life Is A Highway"-Wal-Mart Exclusive, Only Available on this DVD.

"Life Is A Highway" Music Video by Rascal Flatts

Cars-The Making of the Music

Under the Hood TV Episode (As Seen on ABC Family)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I also hear that Future Shop in Canada (which is owned by Best Buy), will have a "Steelbook Case". It might be possible, then, that Best Buy will have an exclusive tin as their bonus.

Please post any U.S. Retailer Exclusives for the Cars DVD that you know of, in this thread.

Content looks similar to the bonus disc available in other regions. I'm sure WalMart will want an extra $4-$5 for it too. I really hate that song anyway. I would go for a steel book case though.

You might get lucky in store and find it for the same price on the morning it comes out. I got a bonus book with National Treasure that way.

Speedy, from what I gather, there are TWO BONUS items at Best Buy? Is one of them a "buy the DVD, and you can also buy this" type of deal, or are they both free? I'm a wee bit confused.

Sorry.... working on thread now.

Buy CARS DVD alone & Get an exclusive CARS 3D Poster.

But The Gift set which comes with the four mentioned cars in it and you should ALSO get the 3D poster as well.

Found this description online of what appears to be one of the features on the Walmart bonus DVD:

"Start your engines with a special look at Disney/Pixar's new cross country adventure with "Cars – Under the Hood," in this twenty minute special John Ratzenberger presents clips from the movie and interviews with the film's cast and creators."

Just FYI.

Waiting to find out what's going to be on the Target DVD before I make my decision.

DarthMarino

Wahlers, that sounds more like what I would expect from the Target version. This picture is from Walmart.com:

http://i.walmart.com/i/p/00/78/69/36/72/0078693672911_500X500.jpg

It seems to have whats listed on the first page (music video, making of the music video, etc). Where did you get this info?

wahlers
11-03-06, 03:15 PM
I noticed on the WalMart picture on their website that the bonus DVD listed "Under the Hood TV episode as seen on ABC Family".

So, I did a search on the internet for what that TV episode was, and found the above description from when it aired on TV.

I believe it was at this link:

http://www.magicalmountain.net/news/disney-news-print.aspx?NewsID=1235

Or, you can just paste a whole sentence from the description in yahoo or something as a complete quote and it should bring up a couple of links.

Ok, then the Walmart disc doesn't seem that bad. I still want to know more about what Target is getting before I decide where to buy it.

dtcarson
11-04-06, 11:32 PM
Yeah, I don't care about the bonus discs; what sort of 3-d is the poster? Is it physically 3d, like it 'sticks out', or an illusion? Full size or miniposter? And what are the cars like? Hot Wheels type or bigger? 15 bucks for four cars seems a little high, but if they're quality, it's tempting. I've got Cars preordered from Amazon, but depending on the poster and cars, I might go to BB.
I guess they might have a picture in the ad tomorrow.

MickeyMousePal
11-05-06, 03:32 AM
Check out Best Buy online and look for a link that says Weekly ad on the top of the home page.

Or go to Best Buy and get the ad....

Looks like the poster is the poster from the threatre and like the poster from the news paper.

From what I can see in the picture on the Best Buy website, the Mater in the collector's edition looks EXACTLY like the 1:64 scale Mater die-cast I bought at TRU in June for like $3-5 (don't remember exactly). If it IS the same kind of car, it is really cool and made out of real metal. ...and therefore probably worth the extra $15.

i think the 3D lenticular poster being offered at BestBuy is one of those that fit under the keepcase sleeve ONLY. they had the sign up on the shelves tonight advertising the title (but of course the title isn't on the shelf until the morning). on the sign, it states that the 3D lenticular poster is ON-PACK, meaning it's packaged with the DVD. so it sounds like it's just a lenticular insert.

dtcarson
11-07-06, 12:33 AM
Oh.
That's not a 'poster'. That's a miniposter, or insert, or something. I was thinking fullsize, or at least half size [12x20 or something] poster, something my boy would like on his wall. If it's on pack, I guess it's possible it's folded, although I don't know what that would do to the lenticularness.
That's somewhat misleading.

Actually, on bestbuy.com, while it says "poster" on the header and in the ad, if you go to the item page where you choose it, it says "3-D cover". And it is allegedly "worth" 9.99. Disappointing.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=cat02015&type=category&categoryRep=cat02000
yep.
It says 'DVD cover'.

As soon as somebody gets the Target exclusive bonus disc, post what is on it. If it's no different than the Walmart one, I may pass. Of course it can't be the same or it wouldn't be exclusive would it. I smell a double dip comin' on and may just purchase this as cheaply as possible.

I wouldn't be surprised if this "exclusive" is offered thru Disney Movie Club when the DVD becomes available there -- perhaps in a couple of months. They have routinely had bonus lenticular covers with major releases such as "...Narnia" and "Chicken Little".

Why do you think this is just like the Wal-Mart Disc? The Target is Behind-the-Scenes featurettes, while Wal-Mart's is a re-packaged made-for-TV special hosted by John Ratzenberger.

My bad. But the Target and Walmart bonus discs together equal the bonus disc available in region 4 (http://www.cd-wow.us/detail_results_2.php?product_code=1035340). They basically took a sparse bonus disc and split it into two pitifully short discs.

A little off topic, but in regards to Cars tins, Costco is selling some Cars kids pajamas in a very cool tin. It basically looks like the one that CD-WOW is selling, but twice the size. If you have kids or have some kids to give the PJs to it makes a cool collectible.

Well at least Disney/Pixar are being smart about pissing everyone off when it comes time to release their "Super-Fantastic-Nitro-Burning-Sunday!-Sunday!-Sunday!-Be-There!" double-dip deluxe DVD sometime next year. You know the one we all expected to get today, the 2 disc DVD release we've been accustomed to getting with every Pixar movie for the past 7 years. Yeah, that's the one, the one with the freaking commentary tracks, tons of artwork, behind the scenes, and advertising extras. #!@$!!!... so, um, which version is better Walmart's or Target's?

I went ahead and got it from Best Buy, with the car 'gift set'. They seem like pretty good cars, and the poster is something like 10x20 inches, so it's reasonable. While I definitely prefer loaded 2-disk releases like Pixar's past releases, if it's an option, I [and my boy] would rather have toy cars and a cool poster than some extras we'll probably watch only once.

I picked this up for $14.99 at BB with the free poster and tried to pre-order PoTC:DMC to save $5 on Cars. Well, it kept kicking it out and the cashier gave me every excuse from the fact that the DVD was on sale(even though the ad said Cars or any other DVD $14.99 and up), to the free poster being the cause. I think it was the free poster that was causing the system to not give the discount.

Anyway, I went to customer service and they did it for me over there.

You beat me to it, I just got back from picking mine up at Blockbuster. They had the tins (first 8 people to buy the dvd got a tin) behind the counter, might have to ask for it. Also, you can't really see it in the picture, but the tin is red with white spackles all around it.

That makes 2 dvd's, and a set I would probably never buy (Over the Hedge, and Cars, and Star Wars) just so I can get a special tin. I'm a sucker for these things.

The Future Shop one?

Basically, they have the standard release (with slipcase) out on display. When you take it to checkout, they give you the free steelbook.

So basically you get the regular keepcase and slipcase, as well as the steelbook case.

My Best Buy had the Deluxe set with the diecast cars going quickly. I couldn't even find them on display anywhere. One of the employees had to point me to a cardboard box sitting on the floor. The top one was empty but the one underneath it had a few left.

I don't know if it will be hard to find, but if you want one while it's on sale and the 3D litho is still available, you might not want to wait. They might not restock until next week, if it's not a LE.

Yes it does come separate (based on what they did for Over the Hedge). So your idea as a gift is perfect.

I showed up at noon at one of the two local BBs in my area, and I picked up the 4-car Cars package, and a minute later the rest were gone! This movie is raceing off the shelves.

The gift set with the cars is not a good deal. You're paying $16 extra above the Circuit City DVD price for 4 cars which Wal-Mart or Target sells in an attractive individual package for under $3.25 each. The most you'd have to pay for those 4 Cars is $3.99 each at the higher-priced KB Toys, which would be on par with Best Buy's deal. These are not exclusive toys by any means, just repackaged from Mattel's Cars line that's been in stores since before the movie came out and still shipping in ever larger quantities.

McQueen and Mater are the two easiest to find Cars, pretty much everywhere, while Doc Hudson and Fillmore are on the more common side as well, although you might not find them unless the store's put some cases out within the last few days. Not sure why Best Buy got Fillmore in this set anyway, Sally would have been the next most significant car to put in there and would have been nice for people who have daughters as well as sons they're buying it for. Many Wal-Marts are getting big shipments of the toys this week as well as their own exclusive boxed sets of 4 different Cars, not packaged with a DVD though.

There are also 2 versions of the Mack Truck available and 4 Radiator Springs playsets in scale with the cars as well as some more play-oriented racing track playsets. There are lots of Cars in this toy line, about 30 so far, and more repainted and new ones coming, including the Buzz and Woody cars from the end credits. It's definitely a nice set of toys for fans of the movie. Not sure how collectible they'll be in the future, because I see this movie being more easily forgotten as time goes on than Toy Story or Incredibles. Those are movies which kids will probably very fondly revisit and become nostalgic for when they grow up.

By the way, here is a picture of the individual Cars toys as originally sold, including the 4 Best Buy is selling. Mattel just changed the packaging this month but is still releasing most or all of these, and adding a few new to the mix, mainly repaints of existing cars like Hudson Hornet...

Or I paid 10.00 for a cool lenticular poster, and got 4 cars for 6 bucks, which is reasonable.
And going down the "Cars" toy aisle at TRU or WM could be *much* more expensive than getting a prepackaged set of four cars. Although I agree, I'm surprised Sally wasn't an option.

yah, they actually didn't even ring the tin (though it does have a upc sticker) so I'm just gonna take it back to blockbuster.

got the wal mart bonus disc, and the target bonus disc, both copies are sealed underneath (though the wal mart 2 pack sticker peeled part of the reflective cover off the slip)

Target also had a Mcqueen pin that they were giving away (it was on the display in the front of the stores endcap, but not in the electronic section)

So i got everything i wanted...

I'm sorry for the report about Blockbuster not having the tin. The lady at the store I called, yesterday, said that the tin was a popcorn tin, with Cars characters. So, after reading, and seeing pictures of the Blockbuster tin, today, I called the same store I called, yesterday, and the lady said, "Oh, yeah, I just saw a guy buy one. Let me see if we have any left." She came back, and said that they had a few, and she would hold one for me, if I wanted it. So, I headed on over, and picked it up. It's pretty nice! By the way, the ONLY popcorn tin's I saw featured Disney Princess characters, including Ariel, on them. I did not see any with Cars characters. So, I take it that the lady I spoke with last night had NO IDEA what she was talking about.

So, needless to say, I've ended up with THREE copies of Cars! I bought one copy at Wal-Mart to get their Bonus Disc, one copy at Target to get their Bonus Disc (plus the pin), and one copy at Blockbuster, to get the tin! Goodness, and to think, I wasn't even going to buy this release at all! I guess I have sucker written all over my forehead!

I'm going to give one copy to my nephew, Camden, for Christmas, and I guess I will try to sell the other copy.

The Target Deluxe Edition, like the Wal-Mart 2-Disc set, is packaged side-by-side. There is a sticker that says something about it being a Target Exclusive 2-Disc set, but, it is easy to tell, since they are packaged side-by-side. They didn't have a whole heck of alot of these at the Super Target I went to. They may have sold out, by this time.

The Target I went to had the 2-Disc Cars set FAR AWAY from the 1-Disc (which was all over the store). It was no where near the New Release Section. It was on a side shelf next to the TV sets and they only had 8 of each (Widescreen & FoolScreen).

same here -- the Target 2-disc sets were on the side aisle, where the kids video section was. they didn't even put any out in the new release shelf, probably because it takes up two rows, which is valuable front-aisle space. also, i had to walk over to the electronics department to ask for the free blinking pin (i found out after asking the video department floor guy).

Yeah, I told the cashier that the Cars litho was extremely nice, and indeed, mentioned that it was probably one of the best litho bonuses they have had in quite some time (unlike the blah Revenge Of The Sith litho that I saw piles of in my local store more than two weeks after the dvd had been released, the Cars one will probably be completely sold out by this weekend).

Of course, the Circuit City exclusive Star Wars lithos produced for the recent Star Wars DVD relaunch were no slouch in the well-done department (and of course, they also quickly sold-out). If only more bonus lithos were like those of CC's SW and BB's Cars, because nine times out of ten I can care less about bonus dvds.

Yup. The Target in Niles, Illinois only had five copies (all widescreen) for the Target Exclusive 2 Pack with Rev'D Up DVD (they did let you take as many light up Lightning McQueen Pins) - they were in a fish bowl near the checkouts - the cashier didnt mind!

Wal-Mart in Skokie, IL has the single disk for $13.87 and the dual dvd set for $19.96 and Best Buy in Skokie had three sets of the die cast cars and tons of lenticular posters as of 2:30PM today.

Watching the movie [again!!] as I type this!

Went and checked out the BB tin, and passed - it's kinda flimsy for a tin, and doesn't say anything on it's spine - I went with the Target bonus disc as the best deal, as it has pretty solid extras that really add to the dvd, and makes up for it's initial lack of extras.

Oh, and I wouldn't touch the Wal-Mart bonus disc with K-Fed's dick - it's just lame promotion for that stupid fucking Life is a Highway song that I really hate, which I feel comes close to ruining the movie - I want to claw my ears out each time I hear it.

Yeah, I hated that song when it was first played on FM radio years ago....over and over and over and over...I'm reading a book now, and the guy, who's stuck on an interstate, says "Hell is a highway that you can't get off" or something like that.

Glad I'm not alone. Love the movie but hate this empty song. IMHO, Randy Newman's songs have added a lot to Pixar's movies and my kids really respond to them. If the WalMart disc had some promotional material regarding his music in Pixar films in general, I might have been more inclined to pick it up.

Price matched Circuit City ($13.99) at Best Buy and got the groovy poster.
How did you do that when the Circuit City ad does not list a price for Cars? Best Buy also often denies PMs when there is a bonus involved (like a free litograph). I guess you were lucky.

Yeah, they usually don't PM when they have a bonus. I didn't feel like fighting over a dollar (plus I had the pre-order already that would have further complicated things.

BTW : Don't forget you can save $5 on Cars by preordering POTC : Dead Man's Chest at BB. Apparently you can't do that if you've already preordered Cars, though.

I got Cars at bestbuy with the 3d poster today. I don't have any kids and I am still going to frame it and hang it in my dvd room. I love it. I got $5 off for preordering POTC. She had to take it off manually. I used the 10% off coupon that they sent for dvd's through the mail, since I was buying another dvd. It wouldn't take it off cars since it was on sale, but it took 50 cents off the $5.00 I put down on the preorder and she let me keep the coupon to use again.

I asked the cashier at BB today if I could take a look at the 3D poster, simply because I was curious. It's pretty cool, but with this month being expensive as it is (video games) I don't know if I want to buy another copy of the movie just for the poster. Maybe if I can find my best buy bucks...

Agreed. I was a bit surprised to find only one disc when I opened it.

I actually liked the original Tom Cochrane version (have it on my iPod), and Rascal Flatts did a decent cover of it in my opinion. Even so, I have no desire to see the video, much less a making-the-video documentary. I seem to remember catching a bit of the "Under The Hood" special when it aired and hoping it was gonna be on the DVD, but given that TARGET offered a much better bonus disc, I went with them. I'll just console myself with the fact that "Under The Hood" isn't worth having if I have to take a bunch of "everyone who shops at WAL-MART loves country music" promotional crap.

Speaking of which, I was really worried that I'd hate "Cars" because I thought it'd be waaay too NASCAR-centric, and hearing the list of artists who were doing the soundtrack didn't help any. However, there was a lot less of that stuff than I thought there'd be, but if "Looney Tunes: Back In Action" can take a detour just to showcase Jeff frickin' Gordon (I'd say "Jeff fucking Gordon", but then people would think I was just switching between the Looney Tunes movie and gay porn), I was expecting a movie about stock car racing with Larry the Cable Guy in the cast to be a real redneck-pleaser. Luckily it wasn't all that bad, but leave it to WAL-MART to emphasize anything to do with country music in their marketing strategies.

Here's a hint, if you don't want people to think only rednecks shop at your store, DON'T ASSUME ALL YOUR CUSTOMERS LOVE COUNTRY MUSIC!!! Of course I think WAL-MART is actually *proud* of their reputation (Hell, they're based in Arkansas, for pete's sake), so I'm sure this kind of stupidity will continue.

I picked up the Target disc today. I already downloaded all the "bonus" features this summer when I subscribed to the Cars video podcast on iTunes (it's exactly the same material).
