Happy Sweetest Day !!!
For those who don't already know, Sweetest Day is a day similar to Valentine's when people share romance or appreciation for one another. It occurs in October on the third Saturday of the month.
The holiday has its origins in 1922, when an Ohio man (my home state now!) by the name of Herbert Birch Kingston wanted to spread joy to the neglected, orphans, and others with similar fates. As a candy business employee, Kingston and others in the Cleveland area began to give treats to the orphans and the poor. When actress Ann Pennington was in Cleveland, she celebrated Sweetest Day by giving out candy to more than two thousand newspaper boys as a sign of gratitude for their work. And then actress Theda Bara gave away thousands of boxes containing chocolates to hospitals in the area, as well as to those who saw her movie.
Sweetest Day is celebrated primarily in the Great Lakes area of the United States – such as Ohio and Michigan - but is has slowly moved on to the other parts of the country as well. From what I understand, the holiday is now finding some non-official acceptance in other countries as of late. For 2006, Sweetest Day is celebrated on October 21.
My favorite romantic movie score at this time is PRIDE AND PREJUDICE by Dario Marianelli. What is yours (and don't feel limited to listing only one score...or if there is simply a track within a non-romantic score you feel inclined to...i.e. "Wifeing" from Basil Poledouris's CONAN THE BARBARIAN is a personal favorite of mine as well). I would also live to know what your favorite Romantic DVDs are?
with love as always,

Favorite romantic score: TITANIC by James Horner.
Favorite romantic DVDs: TITANIC, THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY (on LaserDisc until the DVD is anamorphic widescreen--supposedly next year, fingers crossed), LEGENDS OF THE FALL

My favorite romantic flick is Irreversible.
No, really - everyone always brings up the 10-minute anal rape, but watch the second to last scene in the movie, and it is very much a romantic piece...

Oh, you meant second to last in the sequence of the film, not chronological order.
Seriously, though, I find the last few scenes kinda creepy, because Noe puts in several parallels between the boyfriend and the rapist -- they both want to sodomize Monica Bellucci, and when Bellucci describes why the boyfriend is a good lover, it's because he takes control and doesn't make any attempt to pleasure her.

Anyway, back to real romantic movies: 'In the Mood For Love' is one of the greatest romantic films ever. If you want disfunctional but passionate love: 'Punch Drunk Love' is riviting for its dynamism of love and violence. 'Eternal Sunshine' sure is another great one, as someone else noted.

Seriously though, how did a tradition that seems to have origins in helping the poor and unfortunate mutate into another "do/buy romantic crap for your girlfriend/wife" day?
