I signed up for a Sony card offer like this a long time ago. They just put a credit onto my account after the first purchase. I never used it again after that, so they eventually just sent me a check.

I applied for the card the last time they had this deal, just about a year ago I think.
If I remember correctly, they actually credited the account with $100 not too long after opening it, and without actually purchasing anything. Not sure what I used to buy with it, but I am sure it was worth it. Haven't used the card since.
And no, you don't have to purchase from the sony store, or anything sony for that matter to get your $100.

I am more than a little annoyed at their rewards program. They took the site off-line at the begining of August, and they still have not got it fully back online.
Anyway, the program offers nice incentives if you keep it. For instance, they just ran an offer where if you spent $500 over the course of two months, they would give a bonus of 2500 points.

I've been looking for the rewards program information, haven't had any luck. What is the website of where it should be? How many "points" do you need to get, say, an mp3 player or a boombox?
In any event, I've been using this card exclusivly lately and should easily surpass $500 / month (I never carry a balance though).

Here is the site:

They have two MP3 players currently available for 6995 (512 MB) and 11995 (2 GB). They also sell points at a penny a piece.

Thanks for the link - there's some decent stuff out there. Hopefully they'll keep offering the bonus points.
And for what it's worth, I was reading through the GAO's report on credit cards:
http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d06929.pdf
Pages 73 and 74 (pages 78 and 79 of the .pdf) talk about how the credit process works - that is, what happens when you make a credit card purchase.
Say you make a $100 purchase at a store...
$97.50 goes to the store
$2.00 goes to the bank that issued the card to the cardholder (an interchange fee)
$0.50 goes to the store's bank (processing fee)

I got a card from them the last time they ran this promotion. A glitch in their system prevented them from crediting me automatically. I had to call a couple of times and it took an extra month or so, but they ended up crediting me an extra $25 for the hassle.

Check the fine print:
1 Offer subject to credit approval. Card credit will be applied to your Sony Card account 8-12 weeks after your first purchase. Offer expires March 31, 2006.
Any indication that they are still giving credit for those who sign up after 3/31/06?

I don't remember how much my first purchase was though it's my primary card now. Normally I just charge about $600 / month, but for these past two months I've been at $1,000 or a little over (I pay my cards off in full each month).

I received my card today. So how exactly does this work? I just make a purchase and they credit your account? How long does it take for the credit to appear?
Also say my 1st purchase is for say $100, will I have to pay that balance to recieve the credit or will the credit go towards that purchase?

My wife's took 19 days from the first purchase. (According to the first statement we just got)
Also say my 1st purchase is for say $100, will I have to pay that balance to recieve the credit or will the credit go towards that purchase?
I guess it depends on how soon you make a purchase. If there's 30 days per statement, I would imagine that clock is already running. So you may make a purchase on this billing statement and not get the credit (due to how long it takes) until the next statement. Just depends on how "your" 19 days falls.

My only purchase (see message #29 on the details) was a song off iTunes. Obviously not a sony purchase and just 88 cents. No limit to what you buy, just be aware you may not get the credit on the same statement as the charges due to the length of time it takes.
Go, go, go! It's not going to be around forever.

So let me get this straight: in order to get one of the SXRD (LCoS) TVs thats 299,999 points I have to actually spend nearly $300,000 dollars? I'm assuming there's no way to use points as a discount towards purchases, correct? It didn't seem like it. I mean TV shows that are less than $20 a season are 5000 points!
Other than the free $150, is this a good card to use if you're looking for a good rewards card to use for all your purchases and pay off each month? The amazon card looked like you had to spend a ton before you got anything, and I'm thinking the 1-5% rewards cards might be the best overall option....

I only got this card for the $150 bonus, not for their rewards program. After I use up the bonus I probably won't use it again, and then dump it in a few months.
I have other cards that pay me 1-4% cash back for my main purchases.

Can i ask where you found these? Most I can find are just a straight 1% and any that are more than that on anything are discover or amex, and I'm looking for one for all purchases and some places only take visa/mc.

For the Sony Chase card, they offered one year without interest. Does that mean that, if you don't pay your balance off within 1 year, you will accrue all the interest that you would have gotten, i.e. the interest is just deferred if you don't pay it off? Or do you only start accruing interest after the 1 year delay?
Heat
07-24-07, 10:45 PM
It means whatever the fine print says it means.
If I had to guess I'd say that the one year without interest is on balance transfers, but that any payments you make go towards that balance transfer and not new purchases. That is, if you do it and it works this way, transfer the balance and don't use it again (use a different card). And of course you'll need to make monthly payments - just be sure to read the fine print carefully.
Speaking of this card, I've been using it for about fourteen months or so and have about 11,000 of their "reward points" - had a couple large purchases but I've always paid off the balance in full each month. Anyway, there are a couple things that I want from their rewards site, www.sonyrewards.com , but the two items are always out of stock. What the hell, these are Sony items, how can they be continuously out of stock of their own items? And this is an .mp3 player and a cassette walkman I'm talking about, not exactly oddball items. As soon as I get them I think I'll stop using this card and go back to my old card.

It means you accrue no interest until the 13th billing cycle. HOWEVER, I believe you still have to make the minimum monthly payments, or else it is a default and the 0% may go away and interest accrues immediately.
