What movies did you watch at school? (Elementary/High school)
Just a nostalgic question for the forum.
Didn't matter if the movie was dumb or boring. It was always such a relief in the classroom when the teacher put on a movie, right? (I'm talking movies here. Not those 15-minute instructional pains in the butt) Whether it was movies dealing with historical events that you read about in history class. Or literary adaptations when you had to read the book first. Or movies you just watched on "Party" days, what do you remember seeing?
Grades 1 through 3:
Treasure Island (Saw this on film right before VHS became the norm)
Old Yeller
Popeye (I think we saw a film print of this too)
The Gnome Mobile
Darby O'Gil and the Little People
That Darn Cat ('65)
Blackbeard's Ghost
Grades 4 through 6:
The Prince and The Pauper ('37)
Moby Dick ('56)
Sounder
The Red Badge of Courage
Miracle on 34th Street ('47)
Spartacus
Where The Red Fern Grows ('74)
The Legend of the Lone Ranger
E.T.
The Empire Strikes Back (Yea!)
Iron Eagle (!)
Space Camp
Willow
Jr High:
Romeo & Juliet ('68)
The Emerald Forest
Shogun (2-Hour edited version)
Music Appreciation class:
West Side Story
The Phantom of the Opera ('43)
Oaklahoma
Grease
The Abyss (Last day of school. 7th grade)
(I can't remember seeing much in 8th grade. The most difficult school year for me)
High school:
Hamlet ('90)
Macbeth ('71)
Boyz N The Hood (Last day of school. 9th grade)
Doctor Zhivago
Reds
The Great Gatsby ('74)
Excalibur
Schindler's List (Entire class got to go to the theater to see it)
DNA week!:
The Fly ('86)
Jurassic Park
Aliens
Star Trek V
Star Trek VI
(Math teacher was a Trekkie)
What can you remember?

I can't recall all of them, or even many, but some that come to mind:
The Karate Kid
Apollo 13
The Saint
Old Yeller
I can't really remember any of the others, except Voyage of the Mimi.

I remember watching
Billy Jack in Jr. High School - I think some of the kids including myself were quite shocked at the rape scene.
for History class we watched a 35mm print of Iphigenia at a nearby theatre - we all laughed at the brief rear nudity of one of the actors..

I remember seeing Sleeping Beauty (film) in elementary school. Red Badge of Courage and The Yearling in high school. I'm sure there are others, but the memory is failing.

An entire gymnasium of 12-13 year olds watching The Sand Pebbles is a vivid memory for me. This was only six-seven years after the movie came out. Since I went to grade school before VCRs, we watched 16mm educational films mostly ... all with a distinctive State of Georgia fanfare intro. Not many theatrical films at all.

They never showed us theatrical films in class. VCRs hadn't come along yet. I do remember once in grade school they herded everyone to the gym/auditorium and showed How The West Was Won in 16mm.

A few Red Badge of Courage viewers! I sure would like to see this again.
Yup, I remember the snickers and gasps going on in the classroom during the "morning after" scene in Romeo & Juliet.
Guess I'm gifted with memory.

We saw Born Free in grade school. Me and another girl were upset and crying (because they released the lion) and we ended up leaving school for the rest of the day. I am not sure if I remember it or have been told so many times by my mother that I know this.

Can't remember too many. Gandhi was definitely one for me. I remember Cloag & Dagger and War Games (where everyone would giggle when Dr. Faulken's name was mentioned) as well.

From grade school, I remember seeing the Shaggy D.A., one of the Herbie movies, and some other disney live action piece of shit. I think it was called the North Avenue Irregulars (or something like that) If we saw any other movies in grade school, they would have been disney movies in the same vein.
In high school, we saw Superman the Movie, Star Trek II (with the extra footage!), Superman II, A Bridge too Far, and The Twelve Chairs.
I graduated back in 85, so these were all real films. My cousin (born in 85), saw tons of movies, thanks to lazy teachers with video memberships. I think he saw one a week for at least two years in grade school.
I know it's not grade/high school, but when I was at Penn State, the film appreciation class was held in an actual theater on campus, so I went and saw a lot of films even though I wasn't enrolled in the class. Saw Citizen Kane and Repo Man that way.

Damn, you watched all those movies in school and you remember watching them? The only movies that I can remember watching in school are The Little Mermaid and Dreams.

The only feature length film I can remember watching at school was the 1946 version of Great Expectations. It was a 16mm print and it took us 3 days to watch it all. Of course the VCR didn't arrive until I was in college so that probably explains why teachers are showing more movies now.

We watched Hamlet (Gibson), Scarlet Letter (Demi), The Crucible (Ryder), Romeo and Juliet (1968), and my history teacher showed us "clips" from Saving Private Ryan.
This was all high school and i'm sure there were a few more but I just can't remember them.
My friend borrowed my Enemy at the Gates DVD and the teacher showed that in class.

I remember All Quiet On The Western Front and Lawrence of Arabia in history class, and Un Chien Andalou in a senior film class. Can't think of too many others.

Explorers. Crocodile Dundee.
Can teachers today get away with showing movies that have nothing to do with education (i.e. movies based on novels or real-life events)? I'm sure any movie will offend at least one parent, if nothing else offending them just because they're kids aren't being taught.
