I see the game has started again. I also remember a big thread last year on how everyone was getting bookoo stamps by sending in requests for game pieces.
Is this how people are doing it again this year?
If you send in a SASE, plus the original cost of a stamp, you are already at 78 cents or whatever postage is now, and if you are only getting a $1.00 best buy buck, is it worth the efforts?
Is there someway that you are doing it to limit the postage costs?

1 in 12 are $5. So, if you did 100 you should get 8 x $5 + 92 x $1 = $132 back as a minimum for an outlay of $78 plus cost of envelopes (I bought 100 at Big Lots for 88 cents and also heard Target has cheap ones.
As for maximizing - tons of people last year/this year double dipped (used BB bucks online and then instore so that $132 becomes $264) and if you live in Vermont or know someone who does they can omit return postage, thus only paying $39 to send 100 and get $132 back.
And to quote kenbenobi:
"
Because you get more game pieces than you could ever possibly eat (or want to). You're paying 78 cents to get a $1 or $5 BB cert, plus potentially free food as well. So you're guaranteed to save money at best buy. If you send in for 100 of them, you're paying $78.00. Based on the distribution of $1 vs. $5 stamps, you'll get 8 $5 ones and 92 $1 ones. Thus, $132 for your $78 spent. Thus, 41% off. Could be more, could be less, based on the actual number of $5 stamps received, but you're guaranteed to save 22% even if you have the worst luck in the world..."

I think the possibility of getting free food did it for me. LOL.
I'll have to check and see what the limits are and so forth. So, if I buy something that is $125 and I have $125 of best buy bucks, it's free?
EDIT: Answered my own question above, yes it's free depending on the limitations of what you can use them on.
Does the USPS have bulk rates?
I'll do some research on it also.

What are the specifics for sending it in?
2. Without Purchase. To request a Game Piece without making a purchase at McDonald's, persons in the United States, Guam, Saipan and American Samoa may mail a Self-Addressed, Stamped Envelope (SASE) with sufficient postage and their return address (name, street address, city, state, country, and zip code) legibly printed thereon to: MONOPOLY® 2006 Game at McDonald's, Game Piece Request, P.O. Box 49434, Strongsville, OH 44149. Vermont residents with a return address located in Vermont may omit return postage. DO NOT SEND POTENTIAL WINNING GAME STAMPS, COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS TO THIS ADDRESS. Each request must be mailed in a separate outer envelope. Requests that are sent in business reply envelopes, that are photocopied, mechanically reproduced or not mailed in separate outer envelopes will NOT be honored. The return address and SASE mailing address must be the same address or the request will NOT be honored. One (1) Game Piece and one (1) Chance Piece will be mailed in response to each request, while supplies last. Mail-in requests must be postmarked no later than October 30, 2006, and received no later than November 6, 2006. If the Game runs long in restaurants, these dates are subject to a corresponding extension.
I hand wrote them, but I know people that used their computer and still received them. You receive one BestBuy Buck and four Monopoly pieces.

I'll be interested to see my turn-around time. I live one town over from where the requests are going (Strongsville, OH, a suburb of Cleveland). I sent out the last 20 of my requests today. Last year I got all mine back, but I think I only sent in 20. I don't think I would have had the patience to write out more than the 200 envelopes I did, and I wouldn't have the guts to chance wasting all that postage by printing out the addresses on a computer.

I limited myself to $100 out of pocket, or 120 envelopes. Mailed seventy on 10/3 and fifty on 10/4.
So far I have received 69 back:
62 x $1
7 x $5
Plus I've been eating sandwhiches at McDonalds since I have a buy one - get one free card (get the chicken sandwich with no mayo, and obviously no fries or anything). There I've gotten four $1 BBB and two $5 BBB. I expect to have about $200 worth of BBB by the time all is said and done. What I want to get is a Nintendo DS lite but I can't since you can't use BBB on game hardware, so I'll probably use the BBB for some games as well as some odds and ends.
By the way, if anybody is in it for the food... out of the 69 I've gotten back, I probably have 30 to 35 free food coupons - free fries, free coffee (or soda), free breakfast sandwiches, and free McFlurrys.
And before anybody decides to drop some serious cash (and time) on envelopes... there is the caveat of "while supplies last". I don't remember how long supplies lasted last year but if I remember right... there was a time when they started just mailing the rules back.

It is a small investment compared to the potential of what you could get back.
500 envelopes written means you've paid out $195 in postage plus the cost of envelopes. So, lets figure about $200. If you got just $1 BB bucks back, you'd have $250, so you "made" $50. But, based on the odds, 8 out of every 100 should be $5 pieces. So now you have 20 $5 pieces ($100) + 230 $1 pieces for a total of $330.00 .. Not a bad return on a $200 investment.

That assumes that you get all 250 offers back and assumes that you will get 20 $5 pieces. If you are 90% successful with your offers return then you would still yield $297 total or $97"made". That is not too bad. However, what if the stuff you buy with your best buy bucks are cheaper elsewhere? That cuts into your "made" even more.
I am not mailing in any offers but I do hope that others are very successful with the mail in offers. Good luck everyone, I hope you stick it to the Man (Best Buy)!

It's good, but not quite that good (unless you live in Vermont). 500 envelopes @ $0.82 / envelope = $410 out of pocket.
1 in 12 are $5 coupons (not 1 in 8), so 42 $5 coupons and 458 $1 coupons = $668, or a "profit" of $258. Assuming that you get all of them back, of course. Plus a ton of free food coupons.
And to answer another question above, the limit is $200 in Best Buy Bucks per day.

Additionally, it was possible last year (and possibly this year) to use them BOTH online and instore (each BBB could be used twice). That provides about a 80% discount on BB goods.
Yeah, you have to pay something (postage: 2 stamps per entry), but you can get an incredible discount on what you do want to buy. One won't make money on this scheme, but if there are things you would buy at BB, it allows for a nice ~80% discount.

You can definately use them both on-line and in-store. The question is whether the store (or somebody else within Best Buy) will enter the codes at some point to see if they were used on-line and, if so, what would be done. Obviously not all codes would be checked but it is conceivable that a sample of codes redeemed in-store would be checked.

Sent in 500 from socal the first week. Got around 450 back. Printed all of the outer envelopes w/ my laser printer, handwrote the SASE. Got about 1 in 12 $5 as I expected. Bought a PSP online w/ the 5's and some games in store. Also bought some DVDs and a few pre-paid Sirius cards instore (even though the rules prohibit those). Maybe if I end up with enough I'll get an Ipod.
I did 1000 SASE last year, but the game was better return. Still fun to play and to give away tons of food to friends. I think I ended up with about 60 free breakfast sandwiches alone, probably 250-300 or so food items in all.

If you get them sent in the next couple days, you should be safe.
Last year there was only one day that they didn't fill SASEs (instead they put the rules in). After that day, they resumed filling envelopes. I sent a couple on the third week (which is this week this year) and they came back without problem.
Additionally, there seems less interest this year on the other deal sites (fatwallet, slickdeals). I'm guessing mostly because it's not as good of a deal as last year.
Anyway, my opinion is that it would be safe to send through the end of this week. But I'd be nervous sending any after the end of this week.

It really doesn't take that much time to run a few hundred envelopes through your printer, as long as you have a decent printer. Plus it's fun opening all the game pieces. I also like getting all the free food coupons and giving them away to food and co-workers. So, whatever.

So am I, which is why I hand-wrote both the inner and outer envelopes. And used a blue ball-point pen to make it even more clear that hand-wrote it.
A co-worker went over the rules with a fine-tooth comb and swears that you can use printed lables on the outer and inner envelopes, and sent off ten that way. If he does get anything back I'll let you know, I mailed 50 at about the same time so I'll know when his should get to him.
If you do want to mail off 100 entries... do it sooner rather than later. Remember that there is a "while supplies last" provision in the rules.

I spent $115 in BBB on Sunday and they didn't scan any of them. Plus, what another poster already said is correct. THE BARCODE on the BBB ONLY INDICATES THE DOLLAR AMOUNT. It does not contain the online code. So if they wanted to check if they were double-dipped, they'd have to manually input them all.
Plus, at least at the Best Buy where I spent mine, they just put them all in a giant envelope at the register, so they have no idea which BBB were mine an which ones were some other schmoe's BBBs... I don't think we have anything to worry about with double-dipping.
Make sure you bring a copy of the rules when you cash out though, as it saved me about 10 minutes by having my own and being able to point out to them that computer software was NOT restricted in how many BBBs you could spend on them (other than the $200 per day limit).

Plus, at least at the Best Buy where I spent mine, they just put them all in a giant envelope at the register, so they have no idea which BBB were mine an which ones were some other schmoe's BBBs... I don't think we have anything to worry about with double-dipping.
According to a post on FW, one manager specifically told a customer he was checking (some) codes of coupons in his store. It doesn't seem like it is corporate policy, but it is still a risk.
Last year they always stapled my BBB to my receipt (with my name and info on it). Obviously this is a store-by-store case...

But say I stroll in with 50 of these things. Do you honestly think they are going to try and input many of the codes, let alone one? Even scanning the barcode will be a PITA for many of them.
Not while you're checking out.
Okay, follow me here.
You go the Bestbuy website, and use your Bestbuy bucks. One of them has a code 0123456789. When you order online you have to give your name, address, and credit card number.
Then, a week later, you walk into a Bestbuy and give the cashier that same Bestbuy buck. She takes it, applies it to your purchase, and sticks it in the big envelope.
Then, at some later point, maybe even after the redemption period is over, they go through and enter all of the unique redemption codes to see if anyone has double-dipped.
They start entering codes and come across the code you used online, 0123456789. When they notice that it's been "double-dipped" both online and in-store, they could then check to see who used it online and then charge-back the amount.
Doesn't matter who used it in the store; as long as they got the physical coupon back AND had the online code used, they can hit the person who used it online because it's tied to a name, address, and credit card number for the online purchase.
Do the rules explicitly state that it can't be redeemed both in-store and online with the unique code? Does it ever tell you to destroy the "buck" after you entered the code or not to redeem it? Since they don't appear to check the unique codes in-store, and actually have seperate "codes" for each use (the generic bar code and the unique alphanumeric) I suppose a case could be made that they're actually seperate uses.

In case anyone still wants to send some, but doesn't want to write the outer envelopes (or just a note for next year)...
I sent a test batch of 30 envelopes with labels (that I laser printed the addresses on) and got them all back today. Those were sent (Berkeley, CA post office) 10/5.
The turnaround is slow as heck for me (about 2.5 weeks or so), but just wanted to let people know that labels will work. So much for all that time spent handwriting the rest of mine. At least I know for next year.

I meant last year. last year was definitely better. I also got my returns faster.

there's also no way they can prove that the same buck was used by the same buyer online and in store. that means they can't arbitrarily charge back the online customer since that person might using it legitimately. my conclusion is that unless the automate the verification process, there's no way they'll be able to know who used what when.

Depending on how things work out, I was planning on trying the same (buying a game system online using 40 $5 codes). Considering that the $3 limit on DVDs isn't enforced online, I'm hopeful it will be the same with video game systems. But I have not tried (yet) and would be interested in any experience doing this last year.

Just remember that when you use BB Bucks online, according to their rules, if the order is canceled for whatever reason, you LOSE the bucks. So if the hardware order gets canned fro whatever reason, you will be out those $200 BB Bucks and NOT get a refund (according to the rules). Be careful if you try.

I was wondering if everyone was successful if they used a laser printer to fill out the info on both envelopes. I missed the boat this year but if the rules don't change would love to do this next year. Also, if you used a postage machine, did you only use it for the outer envelope and not the SASE (as machines print with a postmark date on them)...thanks!

ymmv on this though. I ordered a $139 dvd storage unit using all BBB and it was damaged during shipment and my order was cancelled with about $1.xx or so refunded to my credit card. A quick call to corporate and some explaining that I didn't not cancel my order or attempt a return ended with me getting a $140 gift card. So as long as you're not violating the rules in using BBB online, I would say there is much less risk.
Also, I used 40 $5 bbb codes last week to get a PSP online w/ instore pickup. PSP for $0 out the door w/ no questions asked. I also bought an Ipod nano instore using $199 BBB. Sweet.
Only thing I'm not sure about this year is whether the $200 per day limit online is being enforced. I know it was last year. I don't think I'll push it anyways.

I scanned them in 40 at a time (since 40 is the max for an online order and 40 fit on the scanner with ease). I just left them as JPEGs and I'll copy the codes for each online order. OCR would be interesting, but might be more work than it is worth...

I have a question hopefully some one could answer for me.
I have never used BBB or in-store pick up before and was thinking of trying out both. I want to order two of the b1g1 special editions that are on sale this week and I have $7 in BBB.
The rumors seem to be that the $3 limit is not enforced online so my question is could I order two movies, use the BBB to get $7 off, use in-store pick up to avoid shipping charges and get both movies for a total of $12.99 (plus maybe tax)?
Or can BBB not be used on sale items? And, would I need to bring the BBB with me to the register when I pick up the movies? Also, it says you have to bring the credit card used at time of pick up, do they charge when the order is placed and just use it to verify, or do you get charged at pick up? Would I lose my BBB and not be able to try to use them instore as well if I go the online route with in-store pick up?
Any help on this would be appreciated. Thank you.

so it goes, you should have no problem using those BBB on that order for in store pickup. I've used BBB on DVDs online a few times and have no problems. Agreed. Last year I ordered about $3k worth of DVDs online (about 50% w/ instore pickup to save shipping). Only about 10% of the time the cashier questioned the $0.00 price and I just said I used a gift card. they didn't question it, even though the order said I used a credit card which I had to present them. Oh well. Last year I even ordered several preorders that didn't come out until well after the early December expiration. I think I was getting items from BB until mid-February. I'll probably try this again with a few DVDs and maybe a PS3 game or two. Hopefully it works again.

In the official rules the BBB are deducted pre-tax off the item prices. Occasionally a BB manager will attempt to deduct them on the after-tax total, but you should call them on it immediately! You shouldn't have to pay $10+ tax on an item discounted to less than a buck!!!

As for maximizing - tons of people last year/this year double dipped (used BB bucks online and then instore so that $132 becomes $264) and if you live in Vermont or know someone who does they can omit return postage, thus only paying $39 to send 100 and get $132 back.
Has anyone confirmed that this works again this year? Can I register them online and use them later for a B&M purchase?

That's what I'm asking. If the DO scan them at the register, doesn't that put them in their system as used? I'm guessing that using them online before they can scan them (like you're saying if it is busy they'll scan them later) is how you can get them to work twice.

The barcode is completely generic. They all have the same barcode. So you could scan the same one fifty times and it would ring up as $1 off everytime. Entering the code is what invalidates it for multiple use online.
Got 7 more today. All were $1. So that makes 23 $1s and 2 $5 ones. Not really great odds so far.

One post on FatWallet indicates that a manager claimed he was going to randomly check codes from redeemed BBB. Obviously this is a store-by-store thing and there is no way they will check them all, but reading things like this are why I am spending them in store and then waiting for online use. It doesn't have to be done on the spot. The manager could enter random codes at any time of his choosing and see if they have been used.

When there is a problem with the request they don't send anything back (at least not yet, maybe they'll send a copy of the rules or something at a later date).
For whatever reason, they feel that 95 of the 100 you sent out on Oct. 5 did not meet the requirements.
Reminds me of a coworker who read the rules and swore that the inner envelope could have a pre-printed label. I told him he was crazy but he insisted he was right. I rolled my eyes and sent off some evelopes at the same time, I got all of mine back and he received nothing.

Actually the odds of a $5 are 12.4 to 1, not 10 to 1. So if 1 of your last 2 is a $5, you'll be dead on.
I only got 12 back today, all $1, but I'm still a bit ahead of the odds altogether. Just waiting on a few hundred more, all printed on my laser printer. hmmm, maybe that's why i'm waiting... hope not as some on FW and SD have gotten printed ones back. we'll see....

Yeah, I was wondering a similar thing. I really want a Wii, but video game hardware is excluded. Can I just buy some items totalling $200 then return them for a gift card which can then be used unrestricted in the store? Spending $50 to get a Wii would definitely be sweet.

I would be very surprised if the return method worked as they put in the BBB as a discount so it wouldn't be counted as something to be refunded if you return the item.

Although the BBB says you are limited to $3 on DVD/DVD boxset/CD, you can use more than $3 BBB ONLINE; if you try to use more than $3 in-store for DVD/CD then the cashier's screen will pop up a "requires manager's authorization" screen message and the cashier is required to get a manager who are more than likely to tell you you can only use $3 in BBB on DVD/CDs.

Has anyone tried to order a 200 dollar item online for inn store pick up then use the 200 dollars ins tore as well, then returning booth items for a 400 dollars gift card?
It will NOT work. You'll only be refunded what you actually paid. It's in the rules. And last year, I had a problem with an item that was no longer carried. I tried to return it, but would have only gotten a dollar or two back. So I just kept the broken item.
You can try it, but it won't work.

Yeah. That's the sucky/but good thing about these. They take off the price pre-tax. So you pay less for tax, but you also can't get a refund (which makes sense).

How about this... I get a bunch of merchandise (thinking Wii games) and then return them after Christmas without a receipt. Wouldn't that work at ~$50 a game assuming they'd all still be in stock?

Good question. I wonder if a gift receipt would carry that data over. At the very least you could use it to get store credit, which is much more flexible than a BBB.
Anyway, today I got back the rest from my last batch. It was a really really good batch. NO food coupons but I did get an extremely good ratio of $5 BBB. Almost 3-1. My first batch was about 10-1.

My BB doesn't like me...
I tried to use some of my best buy bucks tonight in-store, and got rejected!!! I had a WoW timecard (19.99) and some raisinets (1.49) and about 30 $1 BBB in hand, excited about getting such a good deal because this is the first time I've done this, but of course she ruined my fun and told me I could only get $3 off the time card. Now I ain't tryin' to hear that, so she got the manager, who confirmed that there was a $3 limit on media. Placated with the raisinets but confused as to how I avoided that great transaction, I went home to finepick the fineprint with a finetoothed comb and, lo and behold, it explicitly says the limit doesn't apply to video games or computer software.
What gives? I haven't heard anyone else getting rejected, and it can't be regional. Has anyone else had any problems with oblivious employees? I don't wanna be that guy who brings a printout and has to speak to the manager and explain myself twice, while everyone behind me on a Saturday afternoon has to watch the cashier scan the BBB, one by one of course, and grumble about how they could be listening to their new Kanye CD by now. These bucks have suddenly become very troublesome...I wonder if it's possible to check out in the customer service line...

I guess I would be most upset if I receive them all back after the redemption period only to find out that I got the Boardwalk or Short Line RR piece. That would be worse than losing a few grand in BBB. We'll see what happens. I mean I have 2 different McD's customer service reps telling me there was nothing wrong with the manner of my entries. I should at least get some compensation for my postage and envelopes, but really should get the value of the BBB plus the value of food prizes, online prizes and the value of potential wins at the big prizes. I would call, I've done it before. The BB.com people (who you'll quickly learn aren't in the US) will just look up your order number and make the change if they can. Based on my experiences, I believe that they do not see the method of payment or any details unless you attempt a refund or cancel. Even if they did, I would doubt they would know whether an item was "ineligible." You can always call and get an extension on the backorder (see below) but if you know the item is instore, it's probably worth going that route first, and if that doesn't work, make them put it on extension rather than cancelling. Don't let BB.com cancel, they seem to push that as an option at times.
Also, back in mid-October I pre-ordered the Gran Turismo 4 Mobile PSP game for $40. Best Buy had, and still has the game's release date as 11/1/06. However, I have since learned that the game doesn't have an official release date and may not come out until maybe Jan-Feb 2007 or so. BB lists the item as backordered. So, I just received a notice via email that it's still on backorder and that the order will be cancelled unless I call and extend. So of course I called since cancelling = $0 for me. Extending was easy, but the most recent email states that if the item doesn't come in w/in 90 days then it will be cancelled. Let's hope the game comes out by then or I'm out the $40. Lame.

So...I'm trying to spend them online and for whatever reason bb.com is not loading the check out page. What the hell is going on? I tried IE and Firefox but neither of them work. I'm a little worried as I still have quite a bit to spend. I can browse it just fine and can go to the checkout page but when I actually click the checkout button it just keeps loading. Anyone else having any trouble?
I think it is the sign in page as I just tried to sign into my account.

I still need to place 1 more order .. I can't use it to preorder Dead Man's Chest, can I?
I have about 15-20 different preorders already, some for DVDs some for video games. I've already received a few and I got all of mine last year too. I was getting packages from Best Buy until mid-March.

Did any of you guys get any extra hassling when using a large quantity of BBB in store? I used a bunch on an iPod and they had to get manager approval and then they took a copy of my driver's license and everything. Just wondering if this is standard procedure.

I had some hassle .. mainly because the idiot in customer service kept insisting that the Zune was not eligible (and - according to her - neither were iPods). I think my biggest problem was how she kept trying to force the extended warranty on me, and then got bitchy when I kept turning it down. They never asked for any ID or anything like that .. Last year they did a copy of my license and had me fill out the yellow return form.

Nope. I used $65 worth, and they didn't have a single problem.

I never had any troubles instore, though the most I ever used instore at one time was about $40.

When I used my $200 for my iPod they asked for my id, but when the Customer Service Supervisor saw me and knew me from working there a few years ago she said she did not need an id. Evidently they busted a couple of McDonald employees that stole a ton of BBB before quitting their jobs. No id required on the iPod or the $150 phone system. I had all of my bucks seperated into $25 increments so that might of helped - less work for them.

I didn't have any major problems this year. Went fairly smooth. My major purchases were $200-off an 80GB iPod, $200-off a Canon SD600, $200-off an Xbox 360 (online, of course), $200-off a bunch of 360 accessories, free after $100 BBB Fuji A600, ... I didn't get any DVDs this year, but did score about 20 free games (online).
I ended up not using $10 in BBB because I couldn't get to a BBY in the last few days.
Depending on how the rules change for next year, I'll likely play again. Especially considering that printing envelopes (I printed scanned handwriting so it looked just like I wrote it) worked this year for me.

I received the Superman set I ordered with BBB and it was crushed to high hell. They put those air bags on top of the set, but the set itself was wedged into the bottom part of the box with nothing around it.
Needless to say I've got to make a trip to the local store to (hopefully) exchange.

question for everyone,
i used my BBB back in november to buy a xm skifi reciever instore. i hated it so i returned it and got the cash that i paid back. my question is, should i get the $$ that i used via BBB back as a gift card, or is that credit just lost to me? i know that earlier in the thread it said that if you got an order cancelled online that you lost the credit but i am not sure if this would be the same situation.

You don't get the BBB back. The only time I've received the value of the BBB back from BB via a gift card is when I had done pre-orders online using BBB that were later cancelled by Best Buy (and only get a gift card after calling and complaining to BB corporate). You lose the BBB on anything you cancel or return that was purchased using BBB. However, if an item purchased with BBB is defective or just broken and still w/in the warranty period, you can take it in to BB and get an exchange on that item, but they will not give you store credit.
If you purchased something with BBB and just ended up not liking it, you're better off selling it on eBay or giving it to an friend (unless you paid with a lot of cash as well) as you will not get back your BBB.

Yes, it's lost if you do a return.
What you can try though is to do an exchange - find an item or a few items that's the same price or a little higher that what you want to return.
If the clerk seems friendly enough, just explain that you used BBB and don't want to lose that value.

Sorry but you're toast. As I recall, it stated specifically in the rules that if you return an item, the BBB value is lost. Those that got some value on a returned item were lucky.
As noted above, you can only exchange for the exact item or something else that has the same or higher dollar value.
My story was that I had an item cancelled online (only $40 BBB) of which they didn't reactivate the codes (said they would). So I just ended up using those in store.

Or do what I did. I got two Wii games I knew I didn't want and returned them after Christmas (even "on sale" they cost $49.99). Best Buy accepts up to $150 worth of merchandise without a receipt a few weeks after Christmas. Now I have $100 on gift cards that I can use on anything I want - like Wario Ware: Smooth Moves which comes out next week. :rock2:
