Any way to beat the $500 tag for DirectTV HD-DVR?

I would LOVE to switch to Direct TV, but when I talked to them on the phone, there is a $500 charge for the HD-DVR box. I used to have DTV a few years back & I loved it, but due to a year long huge discount, I switched to Comcast. During that time, I got my HDTV, and Comcast provided, for free, an HDTV DVR box ($9.95/month for service). I'm really not in a position to shell out the $500 for the DTV box, so is there any way around the charge, like special promotions & such?

Wrong forum, first of all...

Second, it's not $500. You can pay $299 at either Best Buy or through DirecTV for it. But, it's not a purchase, it's a lease. If you cancel service, you have to give it back to DirecTV. Not being a customer, really limits what they can do for you. Being a customer, helps as many people have got it for less than $100 (an often service credits to go along with it).

Do you still have your old equipment? Dish(es), receivers, etc.? You might want to try simply activating your account, with no special offers (thus no commitment period), wait a week or two, then call to cancel. When they ask why you're cancelling, say that you just bought an HDTV and discovered that it would cost $299 to lease their HD receiver, so you're going with Comcast. They'll drop the price for you, if it's not a big enough drop, just say you'll think about it and call back a day or two later to cancel again, you'll get someone different who will offer you something different. Repeat until you get a satisfactory offer.

But yes, as Deftones said, they are not $500, they are currently $299 at BB or DTV.

Hmm, interesting. I do still have my old satellite & receiver. Can I just hook it up & activate service by calling them?

Yes. Just make sure they don't have a contract you agree to.

I just called yesterday, i wanted to upgrade my HD-tivo directv box to the newer non-tivo HR20. First guy said it they would swap me recievers for 99 bucks. I called back a little later and the lady said that for 99 bucks she would give me the HR20 and i could keep my old receiver and she also credited 99 bucks to my account so it came out free in the long run. The installation is supposed to be this afternoon. the possible installation days when i called yesterday was today or in like a month. weird. hopefully they dont flake on me today

Wait, I was just at CostCo, and they had a DirectTV HD DVR, WITH a Tivo symbol on it, for only $250.

First, I thought you couldn't get a DirecTV DVR with Tivo anymore, much less in HD. Second, there was nothing on the box about it being a lease.

What's up?

No, they are still selling them to deplete their inventory. Tivo still has a contract to provide service w/ DirecTV, but they will not be selling any new units anymore.
