Since Best Buy screwed up in the wording on this deal in this week's ad, leave it to Amazon to screw it up anyway. ;-)

Amazon is offering both the "And I Feel Fine..." double-CD set and "When The Light Is Mine" DVD collection for a combined price of $29.98.

However, when you place the combo deal in your cart and proceed to the checkout page, the deal comes across as $14.99 in the upper right of as:

Item(s) Subtotal: $31.98
Shipping & Handling: $0.00
Best Value Savings: $-16.99
Best Value Savings: $0.00
-----
Total Before Tax: $14.99
Estimated Tax: $0.00
-----
Grand Total: $14.99

(I'm in the Amazon Prime trial deal right now, but it does appear that it will qualify for Free Super Saver as well since it is initially over $25 -- but YMMV.)

So essentially the DVD is free.

I picked up the double cd today....great song selection and package. Well worth it...to be able to get the DVD too for the same price I paid at BB for the double cd would been a home run....great deal

Same deal for me as well with A9 - thanks OP. I wanted to get these 2 at some point, but sooner looks to be better than later (if it works!)

Thanks for the deal, but it's clearly a mistake. To make matters worse, the DVD is a pre-order. I ordered it and would be thrilled if it came through but I wouldn't be at all suprised if it gets cancelled.

(Also if I had found this deal I probably would have kept it quiet since the more orders are placed, the quicker it gets cannned and then the orders get cancelled -- but that's just me and I don't mean to sound ungrateful. Thanks for the info, I do hope this pans out for all of us, but I'm hanging onto my just-purchased Best Buy copy and receipt just in case.)

Yup, it looks like they caught the error due to the increased order activity. Does anyone know how long Amazon usually takes to let you know the order has been cancelled? My hope is that they let the orders that were placed earlier today go through.

The last time I was involved in one of these with Amazon, my order was canceled the next day (although they did offer me the opportunity to preserve my order at the corrected price).

I'm in my prime promo still, so I picked free 2 day shipping and "as soon as possible"...they already shipped my CDs apparently. EDIT: to be clear, and NOT the DVD.

Surely it's not acceptable for them to not send the DVD and charge me the full $14.99?
After all, I've got the confirmation email that says my total is 14.99, and the Order Status page also still says "Grand Total 14.99"
Hmm.
I hope this isn't going to get troublesome...I'm willing to accept them catching the error and refusing, but this seems like it could almost get fraudulent...especially since I can't cancel the DVD since it is "being prepared for shipment"...hmmmmmmm...

Shouldn't you be able to say to amazon customer service that you have an online invoice that shows that the amount to be charged to your card is $14.99 (.75 if you used A9), and be within your rights to cancel the order/return the order for a refund without paying for return S&H costs (although, if they charge me for both items, I may still return the items on my dime...beats spending $30 when I would just as soon have spent $0.00 dollars).

My total, first off was $31.98, which wasn't even the ADVERTISED deal (!)....
And second, yeah, I went ahead and told Amazon CS that I had multiple records (even their own site in order status! nevermind my order confirmation email..) that said my Grand Total was "14.99"

We'll see what they say tomorrow...

Even on my Amazon.com Order Status page, it still lists:

Total Before Tax: $14.99
Estimated Tax: $0.00
-----
Grand Total: $14.99

(though in truth, it does curiously say above that:
"Item(s) Subtotal: $31.98
Shipping & Handling: $0.00
Best Value Savings: $0.00
Best Value Savings: $0.00"
which contradicts my original order confirmation email, which lists "Best Value Savings" of 16.99)

That's strange. My order is still 'in process' and is not 'shipping soon' yet, but it does still indicate the correct order (see below). I just printed out the Amazon order status page in case they try any funny business with my order. It still shows:

Best Value Savings: $-16.99
Best Value Savings: $0.00

Is this dead? The combo with the CD is now Elton John - The Captain and the Kid. If you go to the DVD page the combo is with the REM CD, but it's 39.98. At no point during the checkout process does it get reduced. Maybe they fixed it?

Well, after their first pathetic CS attempt (which talked about shipping?! I didn't say I was charged shipping! That's the second time their CS department responded with an irrelevant issue to me...) I responded AGAIN on the subject and got this:

Thank you for writing to us at Amazon.com.

First, please allow me to extend my most sincere apologies for any
frustration this matter has caused. I would like to assure you that
I have reviewed all of the previous contact regarding this matter
and I see that our prior communications have not appropriately
addressed your concerns. I hope that I can be of some help.

I've investigated your order #[riiiiiiiight] and sorry to
inform you it was not the extra authorizations on your card. You
have been erroneously charged for the additional amount of $16.99.

To correct this error, I have requested a refund of $16.99 to
reimburse you for the amount you were erroneously charged.

This refund should be issued to your credit card within the next
2 to 3 business days. We will send you another e-mail to let you
know when it has been completed. You may also view refunds by
clicking the "Your Account" link at the top of our web site, then
clicking "Go!" next to "open and recently shipped orders."
Completed refunds appear at the bottom of an individual order's
summary page.

We are very sorry for any inconvenience that this situation may have
caused and would like to thank you for your understanding and
patience. Thank you for shopping at Amazon.com.

The phrasing is kind of funny (sorry to inform me it was not pre-authorization? huh? I guess when I said "pre-authorization" I should have said 'unposted,' but oh well) but there on my order status page it says:
Total: $18.99
Refund date: September 14, 2006
Refund Amount: $16.99
Refund date: September 14, 2006
- Payment method: Credit Card | Status: Processing
Refund Amount: $2.00

...So I may end up only paying 12.99. Weird.

Same here -- charged independently for both items and it took two e-mails to Amazon as well.

Their first response was absolutely clueless and had very little to do with my original query (droning on about promo certificates). The second follows the logic of FangsFirst's reply from Amazon, but I was credited the $16.99 so that's all that matters (but not the additional $2 like FF).

(And I did receive the CD set today.)

Nothing to e-mail Bezos about. This was a clear price mistake, we took a shot, they have every right to cancel the orders. Of course, I don't like an order I legitimally placed just disappearing from the website as if it never happened. Kinda slimy.

But this happens all the time--there's a price mistake, some of us take a shot, some of us get it, some of us get canceled. Life goes on. I frankly didn't need these anyway, and likely won't buy them otherwise, so this saved me $15.

There is something to complain about. Never notifying me that it was cancelled is plenty of reason. I could have been sitting around for 2-3 weeks expecting it to come and never receive it. I just happened to look at my order online or I may have never known. Obviously they cover their ass with the price mistake, but not keeping us aware of what is going on, or shipping it in some cases and then changing the price, is not acceptable.

I understand there is something to complain about, but you mentioned e-mailing the founder and CEO of Amazon, Jeff Bezos. My point was this doesn't rise to that level. Anyway, I agree this was slimy on Amazon's part, and I'm also pissed they didn't even notify me about it. I'm just trying to place it into some perspective.

Well, my package arrived today with both the CD set & the DVD. Invoice, of course, had a total charge of $31.98 (same as cc account which I checked online). I saved the confirmation email listing a total of $14.99 for both items and emailed customer service asking for an adjustment to my credit statement. Hopefully, they will comply & I won't have to return the items (I am a big R.E.M. fan, particularly of the early stuff that is featured here...I have been a fan since MURMUR was released...unfortunately, was not one of the lucky 15-odd fans who got to see the then-unknown band at a club on "The Strip" in Knoxville before they broke big).

~Edit Update...2 hours later~ Just checked again after mowing yard. Amazon replied notifying me that they have requested a $16.99 refund. Oh Frabjous Day!
Thanks to OP & sorry to those whose orders were cancelled (I've been there, too...many times). BTW...when I first began reading this thread, the deal was "officially" dead...but I checked back the next morning and it was still on. So...the moral of this tale is never to give up.

my order was cancelled too.
here's why i think everyone that had there order cancelled should complain-
this thread clearly shows that the sale went dead after the first day it was active, only to be re-activated again the next morning. i tried to place my order the first day around 5pm est (i think) and couldn't. when i checked the forum the next morning the sale was on again and i ordered successfully with invoice for $14.99.
amazon is obviously honoring SOME of the purchases from what i'm reading in this thread (people have received their orders already) and not others- that's such dishonest crap! then to send the cancellation notice- like they reserve the right to cancel a confirmed order with invoice after the fact because they f*cked up!
perhaps if the items were out of stock, but amazon didn't even list that as a reason for cancellation. their reason was, WE F*CKED UP. sorry!
most stores honor these kind of mistakes if they make them.
look at the massive target snafu last year. and the recent overstock $15 off any purchase mistake. when the vendor realizes their error, they correct the problem so it doesn't happen again and honor their sales.
amazon stopped the sale, re-instated it the following morning and is honoring some and not all of the confirmation invoices they emailed back to customers.
i think everyone who got cancelled should complain.

I'd definitely advise checking because that's pretty much what I got.
It was seeing two separate shipping emails that made me go "wait a minute..."
because both listed a full-fledged total...
