Flyboys

I was watching football the other day and the trailer for this came up. http://imdb.com/title/tt0454824/trai...ay-E28469-10-2 It actually looks pretty good, and I had never even heard of it until now. It comes out in like two weeks.

Yeah, I didn't really know much about this movie until I saw a preview for it on Nothing But Trailers on the HD channel a few weeks back and I was really impressed. The aerial fights look pretty dang cool. I'll probably be checking this out.

I saw a TV spot for it and it looks pretty good. They touting it as From the Producer of Independence Day and The Patriot, so I'm afraid that it won't have any more substance than your typical action flick, just set in WWI.

I also noticed that it was co-written by David S. Ward so my hopes for a good flick have risen at least a little, although Ward only has a couple of hits IMO.

I love biplanes and WWI Aerial combat (or any aerial combat for that matters) but I hope the director and especially producer Dean Devlin know what to do with WWI aerial combat and not stuck with that ID4 thing Devlin do. Perhaps ID4 is more Emmerich than Devlin, but who knows.

Looks cool to me. I'm sure it has zero substance, but seems like it would give a home theater a pretty good workout.

Yeah, I agree with you...may be lacking a little substance but it looks like an overall entertaining movie with some good action scenes in the planes!

Jean Reno = Me purchasing a ticket.

Now I have been burned with this thinking in the past but the trailer looks pretty good and the aerial battles look amazing.

Add me to the list who never heard about this movie until the other day. I'm seeing it on the big screen for sure.

I was somewhat interested until I read in Premiere that the run time was 140 minutes. I don't know if what I saw from the trailer can be interesting for almost 2.5 hours.

I thought it was cool that they were doing a WWI movie dealing with this subject matter. I just hope it doesn't end up being "Dawson's Creek 1914 -1918"

David S. Ward? Does this mean James Franco is playing Ricky "Wild Thing" Vaughn's great grandfather?

I saw it earlier tonight at a free screening.

*No spoilers mini review*

While light on plot, the movie was a very solid action movie. The dogfights were by far the best looking and exciting I've seen. Any time you see the squadron going off you can expect a solid action sequence with spectacular effects.

While initially I was fairly indifferent to most of the characters, they really started to grow on me as the movie went on. There were a few points when the audience actually cheered for them. I was honestly surprised by James Franco's performance, he really nailed the character. Jean Reno was good as I expected, but he didn't get a lot of screen time.

My only real complaint with the movie was the romantic subplot that really wasn't needed. While it may have been true to life, it really wasn't needed in the movie. Although it did end up providing a nice bit for Jean Reno which I appreciated. It didn't eat up too much time though so don't let that turn you off from seeing it if you're interested.

Overall, I liked the movie quite a bit more than I was expecting to. If you liked the trailer, you'll most likely like the movie as well.

besides the dog fight scenes I thought this was a pretty mediocre movie...

the acting was inconsistent all round... James Franco couldn't act his way out of a paper bag IMO. Jean Reno is becoming a walking cliche - everytime he appeared on screen my friend would lean over an add his MST3K comment: 'I'm Jean Reno' which just cracked me up.

The music never stopped, the drama felt forced and never really conveyed any sort of emotion. The whole love interest aspect could have easily been deleted.

Spoiler:
one bombing sequence looked soooo Thunderbird-ish with some very obvious miniature work getting blown to shit - very badly

This had potential, but in the end was quite disappointing.

30% on Rotten tomatoes...but just about every negative review mentions the "thrilling" dog fights. I'm soooo there!

That reminds me...I need to load up Red Baron 3d...install the Full Canvas Jacket mod and mix it up with the Huns!

I liked it. Though it add nothing new to the table, it was still quite an enjoyable movie. My only two gripes where that the pilots bonded too quickly and the text ending shots.

And I actually liked the love story since it wasn't heavy handed and actually felt very sweet.

This movie looks to be similar to Howard Hughes' Hell's Angels.
Should be great to see this with all the updated technologies of today even though Hells Angels was ahead of it's time when it was made and was the first multimillion dollar movie ever made.

I was worried about the 140 minute run time as well, but they pace it well enough where you never get bored. There's plenty of action in the movie - I thought it'd have one big scene and then a few minor ones, but all of the scenes are plenty long and exciting.

There is a romantic sub-plot and it may be un-necessary, but it isn't cringe-inducing. As someone already mentioned, its kind of sweet.

I would never call this a spectacular movie, for the Saturday matinee price it kept me entertained for all 140 minutes.

I enjoyed the hell out of it. Sure some parts were melodramatic or cheesy, but I had fun and was entertained throughout...some of the dogfights were spectacular in themselves and there were parts where the audience literally cheered. A very fun movie.

the crowd at my screening cheered when
Spoiler:
the pilot got shot in the face, predictable, but deserving nonetheless

Yeah, for some reason I was expecting that to happen way toward the beginning of the film (had such a scene ocurred in another such movie?) but was delighted nonetheless once it happened.

I'm definitely buying this one when it comes to video.

Wow. I cannot believe how crap this was. I wanted so badly to like this.

I have been crying about how no one is using new graphics in video games to make more and better WW1 aircraft games.

I sat through Pearl Harbor to see Mustangs and Zeros follow the same flight physics as Tie Fighters and X-Wings

Now I get to see Bi (and Tri) planes follow the same flight physics of F-18s! (Fucking vertical climb???)

The character rubbish was just that. Rubbish. (Flyboys is the new (and older) Pearl Harbor).
