View Full Version : Where are you buying Star Wars - non SEs?

Where are you all buying it?

Where's the cheapest place either on line or at a store.

They're not really non SE, since they include both the SE and the original cuts. But I think im getting mine at Best Buy. The $59.99 exclusive tin seems too hard to pass up. I think most of the stores in Speedy's post didn't list the individual prices though.

Yeah, I'm loving on the idea of the tin and all, but when alot of retailers are announcing prices of 13-15, it's making it harder and harder to justify that tin.

Whereever I can get them the chepaest. Lucas didn't spend much money on bringing the original versions to DVD, so I might as well not spend a lot of money acquiring them. Then save up for the HD versions that will come out a year before HD is replaced by a new format. :D

The part that irritates me is I agree that the possibility of REAL remasters is legitimate, but I don't want to be forced to buy the awful prequels to get real remasters and would rather settle for these if forced to choose...

Yea the BestBuy tin is mine...I know it will prob be the same as the King Kong tin that I had to stash away in a closet cause it was too big for the shelf but oh well...

Do you guys think that since this release is limited and will dissapear by January that they won't include the original cuts in the 30th anniversary 6 film box set? My guess is no so that's why I'm picking em up now...I can't see a blu-ray release of the original unedited films so this may be the last and only dvd chance to get em...

I mean whatever happens I'll buy em all...hell, I have 4 different Vhs releases so...

Star Wars is my man and I am it's bitch!

Since the originals are not remastered or Anamorphic or 5.1 sound then I am passing. If giving the chance I rather spend the money on bootlegs of the laser disc versions which are 5.1 and anamorphic. Lucas really let down a lot of fans with these sub par offering on the original versions of the three films.

I was going to buy it from from BB for the tin, but after reading more about the releases, and checking out a few reviews, i'm definately passing on this one. I'll just wait out and hope that one day a real release will happen. Until then, i'll give my money to bootleggers.

... in letterbox? Because, Murphy's Law dictates that your guess may be right: these won't be in the "30th Anniversary" set because they will appear in anamorphic then, not to mention include the deleted scenes.

Mine are on the way from FYE (for the rebate offer, which will make the cost of each $12.99). I sold the three from the original box set (keeping the documentary DVD and the outer box) on half.com for about $30, but that was a while back. I hate oversize keepcases, so I have no regrets passing on the BB tin.

Lucas can kiss my ass, I bought each VHS individually, then IV, V, & VI in a VHS set, then I bought them each one on DVD, then in a DVD set, now there's more? Ha, excuse me if I say Fuck That. The only way I will ever buy anymore Star Wars DVDs is if there is some sort of Legendary-Collectors-Special Edition box set, and it better be really special for me to buy it.

I will also pass on these. I have the SEs, and while I don't like the edits and hate Lucas' continuous revisionism on principle, the edits don't bother me as much as they seem to bother other people (meaning I can still enjoy the SEs in 16x9 with DD5.1). I've also seen the original 3 movies so many times that what's missing or changed in the SEs still remains in my tiny brain.

Netflix has these listed as being available for rent on Tuesday, so I might go that route to see how the transfers are compared to the old LDs which I still have. Also in typical Netflix style, they list Widescreen and Full Screen as the formats for 2 out of the 3 discs, and the jacket image says Full Screen. However, people say that Netflix always gets widescreen when both formats are available separately. I hope that's right because Pan & Scan is an affront to my eyes and unwatchable.

Obviously this an error because these discs are not flippers, but Netflix never has listened in the past to my email or phone comments about errors on their site so I don't waste my time saying anything to them now. I get more response out of a brick wall.

With a projected price of $13.87 for each at Walmart, I'll be picking all three up on release day. A reasonable price to get both the SE and original versions. Sure the original versions are not anamorphic, but I'm only going to watch them occasionally, and they'll look fine on both my 34" HDTV widescreen monitor as well as my 8' ft. screen. I don't need every title I own to be reference quality. :)

For under $14 I'd pick 'em up. I'm keeping the SE set too. That BB tin is nice, but not worth the extra $$$. Now Paul Champgane needs to make a Episode I-VI box (which I'm sure exists, just haven't checked on it awhile)

On Sunday looking at the ads and on the net -
Circuit City is the winner at $14.99.
Best Buy is $16.99
Target is $17.87
WalMart is $19.96

maybe the Walmart will change on sales day, I don't know, I don't shop there enough to do their practices, but please someone post it they do change it.

Without the limited edition tin, CC looks to be the best best, and they DO have the lithographs, even though they will probably be pretty cheezy...

All TWEC stores should have them for $12.99 AR each. I preordered from fye.com several months ago when they had a 10% off and free shipping coupon which comes out to $12.02 each. Not too shabby. I'll still be getting the tin from BB and possibly the ones with the comics at WM and just auction off the DVDs or possibly return them to WM for store credit.

Just to let everyone know, the tin at Best Buy is not as nice and you might suspect. It looks exactly like those tins you get for 12.99 at BB that have movies on Airplanes and such... To me it felt kinda cheap and thin and would look odd sitting in a collection do to its odd size...

They have artwork, which someone has uploaded to the link below. The Jedi disc looks cool, but it's odd to see the films labeled as a "Bonus Disc", when they're the only reason anyone is buying.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. I have seen those tins you are referring to, but have never bought one because they seem too clunky. It would be nice to be able to buy this as a set, but to pay an extra $15-20 seems pointless.

It's also worth noting that most of the film collections packaged in those generic tins can usually be found in cardboard packaging for around $6.99. So why such a huge markup for the SW tin?

That's what they say on some of the commericals, too. The whole "bonus disc" thing is why I have serious doubts that we will get the original versions in the 30th anniversary package.

Furthermore, I'm thinking the original versions are being marketed this way so that Lucas can have his cake and eat it, too. If sales suck, he can claim that he was right and no one was interested in the originals except a few vocal fans. And if sales are great, he can tell himself that people were buying these sets for his glorious re-imagined versions and not the tacked-on extras.

I would assume so thought I could not open one to find out. If they are in their, they are packed in! Umm if you go to Best Buy they have Railroad DVDs, Westerns, and others in Tins... They have a sign that says "tins 12.99"... They are about the size of Band Of Brothers, but the Artworks is way lacking and is made from very thin metal... Hope that helps... I mean for the same price sure get the tin, but dont go venture out just to get it...

Well it looks like preordering the tin at 89.99 did me good...For some reason when they shipped it they knocked it down to 52.99. This comes out to be 17.66 each. I know they are selling the individual double discs for 16.99 so it only cost me $2.01 extra for the tn.

I checked the tin listing and it is still showing it at 59.99 so I don't know if they will knock it down on release day tomorrow or this is just a nice perk for those of us that preordered it at the crazy 89.99 price.

Anubis2005X, when you get the Star Wars Original Theatrical Version DVDs from Netflix, please post in this thread if you got Widescreen versions of all of them. In an earlier post I mentioned that Netflix also lists Full Screen on 2 out of 3 of these.

Interestingly, I had all 3 at the top of my queue (after The Wild) and my next batch of discs shipped today. They shipped The Wild, but for some reason skipped over sending me any of the Star Wars DVDs and sent old catalog titles. Did they skip over Star Wars for anyone else?

Looks like Circuit City is going to have the best price on these. All the Wal-marts in my area are stating $19.86 each and they won't price match unless the price in in the ad (and all the other ads just state "Low Price"). They also advised that they cannot price match by calling Circuit City or any other stores.

I'm starting to wonder if it would be better just to wait and see what kind of prices these go for when Thanksgiving gets here.

I might have to bite and buy them thru DDD though since they lowered their price to $14.89 (though ESB is currently $25.82 on their website for some reason). That's like paying $13.70 in my area if you figure in tax which ain't bad. Since I don't care about a lithograph or tin, that may be the best way to go.

I wonder if I will need to email them about ESB so it can be changed?

I doubt it. My guess is that they would probably raise them up to around $19.99 eventually or after other B&Ms go back to their regular prices on them.

I bought MANY copies of them each. Gives me time to think. First got them at Walmart for 19.96 ea with comic. Then went to Target, but passed. Then to Suncoast, where they were $12.99 after rebate with FREE Topps cards (14.99 if not a Replay or Backstage member). Then to CC to get the free lithos, and then to Best Best to get the tin! I didn't like Target's promo. YES, I currently own 4 copies of each movie! I want the freebies, so I might just unload the extras on Ebay or Half. But if they aren't sealed inside the tin, then I might take that back. Does anyone know if the DVD's in the tin are sealed?

So I read this thread and decided to try my luck at Wal-Mart. I enter the store and see the display: $20 for the movies regardless of whether or not it has the comic. Dismayed, I go to the DVD section to check out other wares.

But what's this Batman? Here the stickered prices for the SW movies are $13.89 for both the regular AND the one with the comic. So naturally I picked up the latter one, of Ep. IV. I'll prob get the rest later, and give my 2004 DVDs to my brother.

The Wal-Mart I go to, which usually has the lowest prices of any in the area for new releases, had them for $16.77 each (w/o comic book). I figured they would have been $13.77 or $14.77 based on their usual new release prices. I ended up picking them up at that price anyway, since I probably would have spent the $2-3 in gas money to drive around to other Wal-Marts. Plus, I had a $20 gift card, so I ended up spending about $30 for all 3.

Did anyone else notice on the widescreen version that the aspect ratio for the orignals says "4:3 Letterbox Format (Aspect Ratio 2:35:1)", but the enhanced versions say "Widescreen format enhanced for 16:9 TVs (Aspect Ratio 2:35:1)". I thought 4:3 was Full Screen. Has anyone that bought the widescreen versions watched the originals to confirm they are in fact widescreen?

TomOpus

"4:3" alone means full screen (for a 4:3 TV)

"4:3 Letterbox Format" means it's "widescreen" but non-anamorphic.

That is just an obtuse way of saying that they are non-anamorphic. The non-black portion of the picture is indeed widescreen.

Then to Suncoast, where they were $12.99 after rebate with FREE Topps cards (14.99 if not a Replay or Backstage member).

Thank you for mentioning this. Since I am buying on price and not goodies, this will be my stop. I called my local Suncoast and if you are a Backstage member you get the 10% off plus the $5 mail-in rebates. I asked if you have to cut up the boxes to send in for the rebates & they stated that you do not. $12.99 plus tax...her I come. I don't see anyone beating that price except the mythical Wal-marts that people seem to have in Unicorn Land.

To be fair, they are reprints from 1977. We have slightly different artistic standards these days.
What I found funny is that the picture on the box doesn't match the cover of the trade because the publisher is different.

There was, but there were also major comics that had some pretty weak art back then, too. I just think the artwork looks a lot better these days and that kind of work was more acceptable back then.

Also - FYI - I bought mine today at Sam Goody which have the $5 rebates per disc. Well guess what...after being old by a manager & one other clerk that you don't have to cut out the UPCs...you do.

Now I am trying to decide which ones to buy. I want to go as cheap as possible but can't decide to go ahead & cut out the UPC (not too much of a biggie for me) or just pay the extra 6 bucks & get the lithographs from CC (not a big fan of them but the photos do look pretty nice). One CC I went to today to see the posters in person said that they never even received their shipment of lithographs.

Target Star Wars Boxed Set Coming Next Week?

Posted by Curto on September 13, 2006 at 10:58 AM CST:

We've gotten words from our spies of a new item coming from Target later this month. Collecting the newly-released DVDs into a single set, this is said to be for sale at $32.99 regularly priced at $39.99. Look for a scan of the ad soon, but chalk this up as a rumor for now.

Not every town has a best buy (yet). Not every country has a best buy. Not everyone is smart enough to check deal forums. Ebay is where smart people make money off of the ignorant, lazy, or those too rich to care. It USED to be a place to get good deals, not so much anymore. I hardly ever buy anything, but I still sell. Most things sell for more than I would be willing to pay.

Yeah, I was joking that a real Star Wars fan would have previously boycotted that version due to the prequel-esque edits. I personally want nothing to do with the prequels or excessive CGI.

For me, Star Wars means the original movies, the 2 Ewok movies, and several PC games (Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series, KOTOR, etc), and possibly the books (though I haven't read them). Basically, if it came from Lucas himself, and it's post-1985, or so, I don't want it. I'm curious how the TV-series will turn out, if he's only in charge of some of it...

I think we'd all like to find this set as cheap as possible. How many dips is this anyway?Well, technically, this is really only the second "dip" as the previous set was exactly the same as the first set only it is missing the 4th (and in my opinion, essential) bonus disk with the documentary "Empire of Dreams". I guess it also has different cover art, but you wouldn't buy it just for that would you?

So in other words, the second release had LESS than the first, therefore no need for a second dip on that one.

Then I got:

Monster Nation (A sequal to Monster Island)
Star Wars Episode VI-Return of the Jedi (Widescreen)

All for $26.20 after Google Checkout

That evens out to $10.94 for each Star Wars DVD and $7.63 per Book.
