really want to know if the single disc is worth getting in the meantime or old is just fine until next year's set...

I can't speak definitively, but it's possible Warner Bros. may not have sent screeners out.

At work, the publicist I spoke with said they had very limited supply and to "check back in 2007." So I'm guessing very few screeners made it out and they'll inundate everyone with the upcoming box set.

Blade Runner
I got an early copy of this a few days ago...
I think the pic quality is very good indeed, though bear in mind I never previously owned any of the other DVD copies and have not seen them.
It is anamorphic as well.
Sound is better than expected for a 2 channel stereo mix - though there is no actual surround activity it's reasonably spacious and not all confined to the front speakers. There is some bass activity, though usually in scenes that warrant it rather than being prevelant all through the movie.
Overall I think it's a worthwhile purchase and will certainly do until the oft delayed SE comes through. And with all of the legal wrangles that have gone on you just never know if that SE will actually see the light of day...

For $15 or less it's definitely worth it to me, but I watch this film a lot. I've had previous video tape, laserdisc, and DVD versions, and this is by far the best looking. Fairly clean, colors are crisp and natural, did notice it looked a tad washed out in a few spots, and I still feel it could look a bit better overall. But after 8? years or so since the last official release I'll gladly upgrade.
The audio was pretty low but I just cranked it and it's nice and balanced, the beautiful score still brings euphoric tingles to my stomach.

Haven't seen it for a while and, after watching it, just astounds me as to how incredible this film was and hasn't lost any of its magnitude. Funny thing is that (and I guess no CGI was done to "correct" it) was that the better picture quality exposes the cables that lift the "hover cars" even more.
