But I have one major question first, as my understanding of some of these things is rather limited. I understand that you can only upconvert the image through use of an HDMI cable. My question is, if I have the player hooked up to my TV with an HDMI cable, can I still use a standard fiber optic cable running to my receiver for audio? Or must I rely on the HDMI for the audio signal as well? If that's the case, then there's a problem, as my current receiver does not support HDMI input. Thanks for any help.

Yes, you may get the audio from a fiber optic cable.
