Help needed with receiver problem!

I've owned my receiver for about five years now, and something strange recently started happening.
For some reason, when I have my receiver in surround sound mode it turns itself (power) off.
When I switch over to "stereo" mode it stays on.
Any idea what's causing this?!?!
It's like it shorting out or something.

Check your connections on the back especially the speaker cables. Make sure they are tight and no stray wire is touching another cable or terminal.
