DVD Talk review of 'Seven Samurai: Criterion Collection (3-Disc Edition)'
I read Randy Miller III's DVD review of Seven Samurai: Criterion Collection (3-Disc Edition) at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=23429 and...very good review Randy.
I am just not sure if this is worth the upgrade. I have, but never seen my other Criterion. I don't know why, maybe intimidation, but I just haven't had that urging feeling to pop it in for the years I have had it.
I am always one to go for the bigger and better edition and this is most likely the quintessential, but will I ever get through all the extras? and is the new transfer leagues above the old?
Also, I know the logo and front's of the Criterion's have changed, but what about the spines? Are they still in line with the older releases and look normal on a shelf?

I know the price may scare many double-dippers off, so you may want to wait for the right sale if you're on the fence. Either way, this should definitely be on your list in the near future---the transfer IS much improved, and the new extras really help round things out (without being too overwhelming, like the Lord of the Rings sets). Aside from that, I don't see Criterion re-releasing this in a new format any time soon, so you shouldn't worry about it being "obsolete" in a year or two.
As for the spines, Criterion has kept their look roughly the same, despite the logo changes. The only main difference is the lack of the stripe, and the spine numbers are now vertical instead of horizontal. Not a big change, really.
Anyway, even if you don't decide to get this one, I'm glad you enjoyed the review!

But, vertical #'s?? that will look odd compared to the rest...that sucks.
