Deadwood *Series Finale* - "Tell Him Something Pretty" - 8/27/06

"Tell Him Something Pretty"
Spoiler:
In the Season Three finale, the camp turns out to vote--but as Bullock notes, the election may already have been decided. In light of the populace's mood, Langrishe delays the opening of his theater, and ponders his future in Deadwood. After detouring at Nuttall's Number 10, Hawkeye arrives at the Gem with "almost 18" men to complement Wu's contingent. Alma works out a deal for her claim; Utter Freight receives a special delivery for Hearst; and Harry gets his fire engine. Stubbs reaches out to a frustrated Tolliver, who finds himself with a folded hand as the action heats up. Through Farnum, Hearst issues his conditions for departure, forcing Swearengen to finish what Burns can't.

There better be some shooting in this episode. 11 episodes of "looks like the shit is gonna hit the fan" and this is the last one. And the description worries me, looks like a lot of things are happening in one episode.

and I'm guessing for Hearst they will just
Spoiler:
have him leave town then any actual fights or shoot outs

HBO is not billing this as the series finale, and nor should we (despite what we all know to be true). But if the network isn't, we shouldn't either.

Spoiler:
In actual history, Hearst died many years later in 1891. In this biography I found, there is no evidence he was the villain portrayed on the program. Apparently he was a person of high integrity and decency. He bought the San Francisco Examiner, turned it over to his son when he wasn't doing too well with it and the son started the Hearst newspaper empire.

Maybe this is why Deadwood is the only Western I've ever been able to tolerate. People aren't drawing guns all the time.

I missed tonight's show.

Can anyone provide me a brief summary?

Well that's the last Deadwood we'll have for a couple years. I thought it was obvious that they didn't know there would be no season 4 when they finished this up. It'll be interesting to see where they pick up for the first movie. Not sure where the conflict will come from now with Hearst out of the picture.

It was so damned irritating watching Hearst stroll around, knowing he wasn't going to be touched.

Bullock is losing the election, Al has to kill a whore that looks like Trixie (it's Johnny's woman) to make Hearst happy, and Hearst leaves camp without event. Pretty uneventful.

And the mighty Deadwood goes out with all the excitement of a wet fart.
Thanks, HBO!

I kind of got the feeling Hearst knew that it wasn't Trixie, but let it go simply because he was tired of the whole thing and just wanted to leave. It's not like he hadn't already sufficiently flexed his muscle.

I knew nothing was going to happen, but it was still a let down.

They have at least 3 reruns a week? Why would you want to read a summary?

Poor Jen. She was about 100x hotter than Trixie.

Very anti-climactic finale.

Yep, that had the feel of a typical Deadwood season finale.

See you in 08 Deadwood

I thought the season 1 finale of Deadwood was one of the best episodes of any show I've ever seen. I also liked tonight's finale, be it season or series. Television takes a big hit tonight, losing one of the best hour long dramas in history.

What was Cy's reason for stabbing Leon? That was bizarre.

With two of the greatest TV villains in history as well. Swearingen and Hearst.

I was confused by this as well.

From the episode summary at HBO.com:

Newman delivers a note from Hearst to Tolliver revealing his plan - for Cy to be his "f**king quartermaster." In frustration, Tolliver stabs Leon and he bleeds to death while the whore Janine tries to help him. Meanwhile, Cy watches the factions gather in the thoroughfare-Hawkeye's 18 men, Hearst's Pinkertons, and Wu's Chinamen.

I took it that Cy was going to have to do all of Hearst's shit w/o the power or money and it was not a good job to take. Although Cy is really hard for me to figure out, I still do not know what the hell is going on with him and Janie.

Good acting, but overall a very lame finale (season or otherwise).

So Bullock seethes somes more but does nothing, Al slits a prostitute's throat so Trixie can live, everyone's scared of Hearst, Hearst buys the claim, gets what he wanted and leaves.

Incredibly disappointing finale. Blech.

I wonder if the Bank of Deadwood will survive?

Deposits were backed by the gold in her mine - now that she does not own a mine anymore.. I wonder if depositors will pull out?

I agree that the finale was disappointing regardless of if you look at it as the end of a season or the series. It appeared to me that the only ones to show any balls were Johnny, Alma and Utter.

I just think he's fucking nuts ever since the stabbing. He's been going off on Leon and Joanie for most of the season.

He did have a great line

"Help me understand c**t, Lord"
