Couldn't find a thread on Fox's aquistion of the MGM catalog for distribution...taken away from Sony. I have noticed that many here were still uninformed on this, though many came to find out about it in the Fish Called Wanda thread. So this thread can used to be cheer or jeer Fox & Sony, as well as discuss the possibility of Criterion re-issues, since Fox and Criterion do work together from time to time.

Not sure on who holds the keys to liscening MGM through Fox... If someone at MGM makes the calls, or if this is a Lucasfilm/Fox kind of thing.

Also I had heard rumor that Sony kept the Bond films out of the deal, but that is unconfirmed. This could explain the lack of timing in announcing the Bond SE's....

Criterions from Orion/MGM that are OOP
Silence of the Lambs
Robocop
This Is Spinal Tap
Sid & Nancy
How To Get Ahead In Advertising
The Unbearable Lightness of Being (Warner now has this one)
Dead Ringers (Warner now has this one)

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. on Tuesday unveiled new plans to revitalize the movie studio by ending video and DVD distribution pacts with Sony Pictures Entertainment and reestablishing a TV sales division.

MGM said it signed a new worldwide video and DVD distribution pact with 20th Century Fox to consolidate sales efforts under one company. Previously MGM split video and DVD distribution between Fox overseas and Sony in domestic arenas.

For Sony, MGM's decision cuts both ways. Sony's home video business will lose lucrative distribution fees it would have earned for releasing titles from MGM's library of 4,000 movies and 10,000 TV episodes. However, Sony will benefit if MGM makes more money because Sony owns 20 percent of the company.

What are some of the tv shows that MGM owns that haven't seen the light of day on dvd?

I hope this is good news for Criterion because we can not only get re-releases of those great movies but also a lot of other movies that MGM never gave up.

Fox and Criterion, im sure, don't have too bad of a relationship can anyone list which of Fox's movies has Criterion released?

but, does MGM still make the calls, or is it all in the hands of Fox now...everyone was under the impression that MGM was nothing more than a logo, it seems now that isn't so...

Haha, I hear the inevitable calls for anamorphic Silence of the Lambs and Robocop Criterions coming from a mile away.

Seriously, anamorphic, cleaned up re-vamps or dual disc double dips on those suckers are welcome in my book.

^^I'd love a straight up anamorphic transfer of the CC Silence of The Lambs. I can't even watch the MGM SE of it since the brightness is so pumped up and the DD track is weak as hell on it (no bass during the initial Clarice/Lecter cell meeting? WTF).
