RE: Laserdiscs - Worth Picking Up At Thrift Shop?

Hey - Does anyone here deal in Laserdiscs? Just got home from the Salvation Army and they had a huge crate full. Good titles - Goodfellas, Apocalypse Now, Spinal Tap, etc. It seems as if there is some kind of market for this stuff but activity on eBay looks dead and no resellers in my area take LDs. Anyone know if this stuff is worth picking up? They're $1 each but I don't have a lot of storage space and although it's cool to have, i'm already stockpiling a bunch of assorted crap that is also 'just cool to have.' Are there any specific titles I should look for? Criterion I suppose? Are there any good Laserdisc sites out there? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks - Glen / [email protected]

Alot of the Criterions are worth having, but really laser discs are for the most part worthless except to collectors. The Game Criterion is one you can't pass up, it has more extras & many exclusives you can't get on DVD... original Star Wars laser discs also might be worth owning for the sake of collecting.

Yeah, I still have all of mine, but they're pretty worthless if the DVD counterpart has all the extras of the LD (if there even were any). Those giant box sets (Platoon, Nightmare Before Christmas, T2, etc.) are really cool though. It's only a matter of time before the hardware will break down and no replacement parts are available.

Pick up anything that is one or more of the following

Criterion
DTS
Not available on DVD
Cartoon Box Sets (many contain uncensored versions not available on DVD)

There is also a decent market for live concerts.

If this is in the Chicago suburbs, I'd appreciate a location if you don't mind. I collect various documentary-style titles and some animated titles.

thanks

Check out Laserdisc for ever and lddb.com. LDDB has a marketplace and tons of stuff to see which can bring money.

If you find 1492: Conquest Of Paradise or stuff never released on dvd (see list here at DVDtalk) pick up anything never released on dvd in the USA, that is why LD's are still worth owning.

Thanks for all the help. Of course when I went back they didn't really have anything left. At least next time I'll have some idea what to pick up. I bought Goodfellas, Apocalypse Now and some live Madonna. Not very exciting.

Is their a site that gives the value of laser disc box sets or can anyone give me a rough idea?
I have the Snow White, Nightmare Before Christmas, T2, Jaws, Complete Tex Avery, The Stand, and Aliens box sets plus about 100 movies, including Beauty & the Beast, Lion King, Aladdin, Criterion Collection The Killer & Criterion Collection Hard Boiled. I am just curious what they might be worth. I gave away my Star Wars box set to a friend years ago and I'm still kicking myself.

Any help would be appreciated.

You could take a look at the LDDB shops as they have people selling some of those boxes so you may get an idea of the pricing.

About 2 years ago I found Hard Boiled Criterion LD for $2. I have the DVD, but for $2 I said why not.

Are these two the CAV or CLV editions?
