View Full Version : What's up with turning off online cancellation?

Tried to cancel my CH DVD account online today using the Contact Us page (just like I did for many previous accounts) and it wouldn't let me. It just forms a popup in my brower telling me to call the 800 number instead. What a pain! Lots of upselling by the CSR, not to mention the waste of time waiting for a CSR (who, fortunately, was or sounded American). Though I did cancel this time using the 800 number, does sending an online cancellation message using one of the other Subject selections work? If so, which ones?

On the Contact Us online form, select "Membership Obligation" from the drop-down list of subjects. Explain you want to cancel your account. They'll usually e-mail with confirmation within a couple days. Pretty painless.

Incidentally, for some reason TV Club accounts are usually able to be cancelled with the old online method.

You can always call the 1-800-262-2001 number - there's now an option to cancel the account w/out speaking to a CSR!

Ironic isn't it - years ago that's all we wanted, now we got it. Now, we just can seem to get a live CSR.

Cool, that worked fine. I hate going through the whole upsell thing!

How do I do it without talking to a CSR? I just called the number to close an account and followed the prompts. I think I selected option 5 on the second set of options. I was then put on hold for a minute until a CSR came on and I had to decline at least five offers (60% off, BMG, etc.) before she would cancel the account. I would like to close my other account now. What option do I pick to do it without the CSR?

I just tell the CSR that I have another account and only need one. He or she then closes it promptly. Not a big deal.

I canceled the account that I started a few weeks ago by email. I sent the message to dvd@columbiahouse.com and they replied right back saying that the cancellation would be final in 24-48 hours. I just tried to log in and it did indeed work.

Not sure, the phone menu probably keeps changing. When I cancelled last, it was all automated about 3-4 weeks ago, and it sounds like the same options you are hitting, so who knows? Another CH unknown.

Yeah, I just email requesting cancellation and it's usually closed within a day. I'm not sure why anyone would even bother calling in.

I tried to cancel 2 accounts today with the automated system. The first one I closed with no problem and without having to speak to a CSR. But the second one I have tried to do twice and both times it tells me that I am being transfered to a CSR.

I tried a few times to send automated emails through CH to cancel, by using membership obligation and they weren't delivered. Just email the address above - quick and less painful than calling (imo) and they took care of it within two days.

CH told me they cancelled my accounts after I emailed them, but I can still log into both of them and it seems as if they aren't cancelled. Although CH replies to my emails saying they are.

Shouldn't it not allow me to log in if its cancelled? Is this normal?

Yes, it's normal. It has happened with all of my accounts with them.

So the accounts are cancelled, but the web site doesn't know?

I've found over the last few months that sometimes when you call you get the "auto cancel" without talking to a CSR and then later when trying to cancel another account I end up talking to a CSR again. Time of day was pretty close on both calls. Very random!

Last week I was able to cancel my account online, and this week I'm being told I have to call them. What gives?

Don't know about online, but the phone was still automated for me last week when I cancelled.
I think it was like this:
Dial number.
Press 1 for english.
Press 5 for other.
Press 5 for cancel.
Press 4 for other.
That's it.

Automated phone cancellation still working:

1-800-262-2001

#1 for English
#5 for other options
#5 to cancel
enter acct. # (they'll then say your funcash balance)
#2 to continue
#4 for "other" reason

Took all of a minute or two, and signing on to my account online immediately following, it already showed it as canceled.

Did a quick in-and-out on this one, with all the talk of unwanted director's selections being charged/shipped. Joined on June 7 on a 7+2 plan (from a mailing), ordered four titles on B1G1 with free shipping for $39.90, then canceled after both orders arrived. Altogether, 11 titles for $52.79 ($4.80 per).

Automated phone cancellation still working:.

I think this is sporadic. I tried to cancel an account the night before last, and after entering all the options, got a recording that said they were closed, and to call back during business hours. When I called back yesterday, I was directed to a CSR like usual, and closed it fairly quickly- as lizard said earlier, best way to avoid their pitches is to say you already have another account open.

Hopefully the automated service becomes permanent policy, though.

^Automated phone closure appears to work only during normal business hours. The reason for that is likely because Columbia House wants a crack at convincing canceling customers to stick with it. Telling the CSR that one has another open account keeps CH happy and keeps the phone call short IME.

I managed to cancel online. I went to the contact us page and turned my popup blocker up to max. Then I selected the cancel membership option, filled in the message and sent it off. I did this before about 6 months ago and it worked. We'll see if it does again this time.

Yup, got a message back from them verifying that my membership was canceled. So you apparently still can cancel online.

Was it a TV account or a regular DVD membership?

A regular DVD club membership.

Last night around 7 or 8 pm I used the online "Cancel Membership" for a TV Club account. At 2 am last night I received an e-mail that it had been done. That was the fastest turnaround I've seen...

Thanks for the idea. Using Firefox 2.0, I had to go to Tools > Options > Content. Then uncheck "Enable JavaScript". I was then able to select "cancel membership" from the drop down menu on the "contact us" page and send my cancel request. I then went back into the Firefox settings and turned JavaScript back on.

I haven't heard back from them yet but I imagine that this should work. Thanks again.
