Some nice $3.99 deals. I've read a few articles that stores are running these deals to free up room for the holiday season.

This looks like a good time to pick up the "other 2" matrix Flicks, and maybe Animatrix.

You are dead on about that Mr. Cinema.....

It's totally possible that a few (if not all) of the majors may have DVD Downloading / Burning kiosks in select stores by Christmas.

That is most certainly the gameplan that Wal*Mart is pursuing right now.

I wonder what size the posters are?

From what I see they look postcard size.

I would be surprised if they were bigger than the box that houses the masks.

Welcome to the Forum btw!

Having seen this in the theaters and having been involved in the comic book industry (retailing and an avid reader of same), I'd say that was a very remote possibility.

The 2 DVD sets seems quite packed to me:

DVD Features:
Available Subtitles: English, Spanish, French
Available Audio Tracks: English (Dolby Digital 5.1), French (Dolby Digital 5.1)
"Freedom! Forever!: Making V for Vendetta" – The cast and crew of V for Vendetta reveal the intense filmmaking process
Theatrical Trailer
The Two-Disc Special Edition features these exclusive supplements:
"Designing the Near Future" - A look at the artistic process of creating the frightening future world of V
"Remember, Remember: Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot" - The history behind the story of Guy Fawkes
"England Prevails: V for Vendetta and the New Wave in Comics" - The origins of the original V story is illuminated
Cat Power Montage – Cat Power song played under images of the film
Easter egg: Saturday Night Live digital short

And as far as I know, there is no sequel planned or at least a sequel derived directly from the comic book graphic novel.

since BB and CC both have Van Helsing for $3.99 I will pick it up at BB (I prefer them over CC)

I'm sticking with the Target offer for V For Vendetta though...the set does look good but I put it under the "unnecessary" category for me right now. I've only bought 1 "gift set" before and that was the Matrix Collection (w/ the bust and case for $40)

I wouldn't think so, but you never know. I think if it was the Unrated it would have said so.

I loved V and have been waiting anxiously for it. I'll probably pick up the Lenticular from Target and the set from BB.

Lord of the Rings is New Line Cinema

(yes...NLC is a sub-company of Time-Warner..but movies put out as WB usually never get the "double dip" treatment)

Rizor
07-24-06, 11:12 PM
The only time I recall Warners double dipping is the Gothika 2-Disc SE. I guess it didn't work out for them. :) Usually, now they release the higher priced SEs on the same day or their SEs are upgrades of older releases.

I hated Munich. I usually love political/thriller/action movies, but just did not like this one for some reason. I even picked up the collector's edition because it was so limited and got such great reviews I figured I'd want the CE. For me, one of the the worst blind buys ever, right along with Napoleon Dynamite.

I really liked it, a little long in places, but works as a spy thriller, imo, and in light of recent events in the mideast, there is a lot of resonance and relevance to the message.

At least with LOTR we were told well in advance that there would be a 4-disc special edition coming out. Since that hasn't been stated for V, I'd assume it's not happening.

Now I get to decide if I should stick with my Amazon pre-order of the 2-disc at $19.99, or spend the extra $15 on the pretty packaging.

Yeah, but that doesn't mean they're not clearing out stock in their warehouses for Christmas. It's good that you got that many cases. I remember when Circuit City had the $4.99 DVDs a couple of weeks ago (the one with X-Men, X2, Sixth Sense, etc.). A lot of the DVDs they didn't have in stock (and it's actually a good Circuit City, the other CC on the other side of town is pretty crappy...they don't carry anything). If they are trying to clear out their inventory to make room for the holidays, I wouldn't doubt if we start seeing more of these sales (or at least these same sales continued).

arsmith7
07-25-06, 05:49 PM
I know that feeling. My sister used to work in the media section of Circuit here and most of the time the sub-$10 DVDs were never in stock. If they did recieve any it normally came late... middle of the week. CC here sucks, they need to get their act together.

Munich did not seem like a Spielberg movie to me. That is one of the highest compliments I can give it. I was skeptical of the film, but kept receiving recommendations from friends. It is effectively suspenseful and contains some great location shooting, cinematography, and acting. It also lacks the artificiality that I tend to dislike in other Spielberg films. It is one of the best new releases I have seen in the last year or so. It makes a very good double bill with the documentary One Day in September. I was impressed by the attention to detail in Munich after watching the footage contained in One Day in September.

With BlueRay and HD-DVD and download center for DVD, it is becoming harder and harder for me to pay anything over $6 for a DVD. Patients and most titles will hit the sub $5 price. I guess being broke helps too.

Haha, I feel your pain, but again just a big thanks for all your help with the deals. You've saved me probably hundreds, if not thousands, with the advance warning. And I still owe you a movie ticket from the X-Men you sent, still haven't forgotten that.

I got the coupon through Best Buy rewards, I've never seen it before but it's a little yellow credit-card sized coupon.

It's good from July 31st-August 6th, which I think would fall under this circular. I'm also now looking for an HDMI upconverting receiver, if you see any of those too :) .

Edit: Speedy, I just sent you an email as well regarding your job search.

Same thing is happening to me, the 3.99/6.99/8.99 DVDs, are ALL coming up as 'normal' prices - both before and after adding them to the cart.

I'll check back today, tomorrow, see if it gets fixed. Hope so. Many, many DVDs I'll buy if it does.

Also, Sixteen Candles is listed as $3.99 on the site even though it's $5.99 in the ad.

At my Best Buy, all the Mr. and Mrs. Smith slipcovers had the upper right corner cut out. Any particular reason why?

I see the UPC code cut off the back all the time, so people don't slip a different movie into the slipcover. Is that what you are talking about. I've never seen slipcovers cut on the front.

yeah, looks like it's the UPC on the slipcover that's removed. Kind of silly though if it's to prevent people from putting a different movie inside, because if the slipcover is removable, then the employee can simply slide the DVD case out to make sure it is the right movie.... no need to mangle the cover in the back to cut out a rectangle. Some of the covers were just flapping loosely in the back because of the large hole cut in the back. Just really bugged me, that's all.

I was able to pick up Sixteen Candles for $3.99 in the store because they had a sign that listed all the $3.99 titles and Sixteen Candles was one of them. They had to do an override before they would give me the price since it was ringing up $5.99.

I was going to place an online order for the three Matrix films (seeing how my store is out) but the $8+ shipping and taxes charges spoiled the deal for me.

i hate myself for being cheap and selling out my hatred of bestbuy for a deal. Walked into bb and they were wiped out on the cheap dvds. I already got what i wanted from CC and there were just a few i wanted to get.

Is there anyway to avoid the shipping on the website for the stuff thats out of stock everywhere for in store pickup? If not, when do they restock during the week?

Thanks

Most big box retailers restock on Thursday and sometimes Wednesdays for the rest of the week.

As far as avoiding shipping charges for items ordered on website for in store pickup and stores not have items in stock, I would suppose that BB will call you when then do have them in stock (or am I misunderstanding this question entirely?).

I don't think they waive shipping charges in any case except when you select in store pickup.

Just ask for a raincheck. I always do. Works a charm.

A lot of times, BB's super-cheap DVDs carry the "while supplies last" disclaimer, which generally translates to "no rain checks."

Picked up the Special Edition of V for Vendetta for $22.99 and the unrated version of High Tension (a blind buy - good decision?) for $5.99. Also had a $5 reward zone coupon, so pretty good deal, all in all.

Used a $5 reward zone card and $8 and change left on a free gift card for basic version of V. I even ask the lady at check to price match Circuit City and she did without any problem. After everything was said and done I got V for $.92 out of pocket.

AARGH! I went in today to pick up Futurama Volume 3 and 4 and they only had Volume 1 there. According to the website they do have Volume 2 and 4 in the store.

You think I would have realized my mistake in waiting last week went I wanted to get a computer from there.

Has anyone gotten the V for Vendetta gift set yet ? What are your impressions of it and the mask that came with it ? Is it worth the cash ?

Thanks

THe folks over at CAG seem to think that BB's deluxe edition set was not worth the money. The mask is very small from what I have read and not made out of sturdy materials. They also have noted that the mask is fetching fair amount on ebay.

Was this one of the lowest prices for Curb Your Enthusiasm? Because I just blind bought Season 4, and it seemed like a good deal. At least I got a "pop up" DVD case, so I can be entertained for an extra few hours.

Side story: I frustrated the hell out of my friend when I couldn't choose between CYE and the set of Matrix 2, 3 and Animatrix. $15...$22....HBO...Matrix...TV....Movie. And then Karate Kid SE was in the mix for a good bit before I finally settled. These deals are hard work!

High Tension (a blind buy - good decision?) for $5.99.
Bad decision. If you had paid more it would have been a horrible decision. Haute Tension was a dreadful film from beginning to end. Most people just have problems with the ending, I despise the whole thing.

gotta disagree with ya there pennypacker. this is one of the best horror flicks to come down the pipe in the last 10 years. i bought it as a blind buy based on dvdtalks 2 seperate highly recommended ratings and have been very satisfied. for that price it's a steal.

here are the dvdtalk reviews (make sure to get the unrated directors cut):

I'm a little confused. Are people saying I should go to the kiosk in Best Buy's B&M before I place an order online?

For example, A Tree of Palme is $6.99 on the web, how much cheaper could it be in store?

Edit- I meant this for the anime thread, but I guess it would apply here as well.

I know it's too late, and I'm only contributing to mixed reviews already, but High Tension was a big disappointment to me.

Cecile de France is a beautiful and talented actress who for the most part picks some great roles, but High (Haute) Tension reflects none of that. Even at $5.99 it's not worth it, unless you don't mind bad DVDs in your collection. (I like to get rid of blind buys I end up not liking. I feel like a person's DVD collection says something about their personality. Crappy DVD's don't say good things.)

It's just another opinion to add to the pile, but I had to let it out.
