I just found the CUTS website where you can make your own Rifftrax. The website is having a contest right now where you can win some signed posters. Here's my first stab at this thing:

The Rifftrax forum was all up in arms about them riffing a third Star Trek movie, I'm guessing that won't be the case with this pick.

Ehh. $3.99 is starting to push it, but I will pay.

Ms. M
09-18-07, 10:30 PM
The Rifftrax forum said that the $3.99 price is just for riffs featuring the Nelson/Corbett/Murphy trio. The one or two person riffs will stay at the $2.99 price. That sounds fair enough to me given the extra expenses they must have from hiring three people.

Agree. I would much rather pay the extra buck for the trio.

However, when I said pushing it I meant what the general public will pay. I guess most of the people buying are fans though so it probably won't matter what they charge.

Chew

I've gotten nearly every Rifftrax since I first heard about them. $3.99 is still OK, but I'll start getting much more selective if they ever get over $5.

LeeVing
09-19-07, 11:50 AM
I don't mind the pay increase, as long as we get new riffs every 2 weeks or so. And from the past, 3-some riffs are usually better than the rest, so it's worth the extra $$.

Too bad Joel and Mike didn't do one together. At least ONE project. That might be rad. I might get behind Cinematic Titanic, but I've always like Mike best.

DJLinus
10-31-07, 07:40 AM
And things get even more interesting in the riff world...

Cinematic Titanic (http://www.cinematictitanic.com/)

Thanks for the heads up. I'm in, despite me being a Mike Guy (Joel's cool, too, though). Strange little riffing rivalry developing?

Also, what's up with the latest Rifftrax? "Missile to the Moon"? I thought it was odd that they are doing such an old and obscure movie, since most of the other Riffs are fairly recent and are for movies that are already in people's libraries or easily accessible at their video store/library. Then I noticed that it coincides with the Legend Films DVD release. Don't think I'll bite on this one, unless I get Netflix sometime in the future. If the DVD had the Rifftrax commentary on it, I'd buy it in a heartbeat (got all of the Film Crew DVDs right when they came out). But just a shitty movie by itself? Nah.

xmiyux
10-31-07, 07:43 AM
I'm also more a Mike guy at heart but I will still pick up a couple Joel cuts to give them a listen. Hopefully they are also reasonably priced.

edit: What will be doubly interesting will be if they go head to head at some point and riff the same movie.

Ms. M

The Cinematic Titanic project isn't exactly like Rifftrax. They have bought the rights to twelve movies and will have some sort of DVD burning technology available. Rifftrax usually does more current hits and only offers the commentaries.

An interesting thing about Cinematic Titanic is the connection in Joel's message with Lucasfilm and that they want to get it out by Christmas. I've heard some speculation this means the first C.T. project will be the Star Wars Holiday Special.

Aww man... no riff rivalries... join forces guys.

Kinda weird for Joel to be doing this though, since he seemed to want no part of anything MST3K after his departure (save for his season 10 cameo).

i also heard you will be able to buy the DVDs too if you want(from Cinematic Titanic). So people with dialup can get it. Also they'll have one a month

They said on the message board that Fred Willard chose the movie, but it does seem odd that he would choose one that would boost the sales of a Legend DVD.

I love Joel, and Trace and Frank even more, but this seems like a somewhat sad johnny-come-lately attempt to cash in on the Rifftrax/Film Crew success. Still, I'll definitely check them out and if they make me laugh, well, hey, that's what it's all about.

I hope that they Riff the remaining two LOTR movies. I laughed so many times watching the first.

I love that these are very reasonably priced and riffing of popular, current movies is a nice touch, as someone said "any movie can be riffed."

MST3K was a fun, campy show that had pretty obscure and unknown movies. The dynamic of the 3 riffing on current movies is just too good to pass up.

I really wish there was a way i could make a disc that contains the movie i own with the rifftrack playing over top it with balanced sound levels. I own many of these tracks and i own many of the movies, but i rarely feel like messing with digging out film, finding mp3, syncing everything up.

Kind of a bummer.

I don't think we're allowed to talk about it here, but there are several guides on the Rifftrax forums on how to make a Rifftraxed DVD. A lot of the methods seem to require like 8 different programs, but I use a couple of Nero programs that work pretty well.

This is what the Rifftrax Player is for:
http://shop.rifftrax.com/rifftrax-player

In addition to the automatic syncing, it mixes the audio from the rifftrax with the DVD's audio, automatically lowering the DVD audio whenever a riff is spoken.

You'll need .riff files instead of .mp3 files to use with the player, but rifftrax allows you to redownload any mp3s you've already purchased as riff files.

Exactly. Although the Rifftrax player might be an interesting stopgap.

I just hate having to find two separate things and then fuss with the syncing. It also makes it a tougher sell when showing it off to friends/family. Many have been turned off by the "setup" required.

Ah, found the file on Google Video. Not sure why the hell that is even available on Google Video, but I guess Lucas is letting it stay up there or somehow doesn't know its there which seems unlikely.

Cinematic Titantic's first feature is apparently Brain of Blood which they performed live for ILM staffers. They won't make the 10th deadline though. Hopefully it isn't delayed too long. I filled out their survey and I'm definitely in for a downloadable version if I can burn it to a real unrestricted DVD (they are using EZ Takes as their delivery service so this seems to be the case). Cost will be an issue though.

I'm hoping they price these around $10.

I started about a half hour of the Star Wars Holiday Special. I've seen it a handful of times over the years, but it still amazes me how craptastic this special is. Exactly what kind of make-up job were they going with on Mark Hamill?

I thought it was one of the better riffs. My girlfriend could barely sit through the Episode I-III riffs (because of the movies themselves), but she really liked this one.

Disembodio didn't chime in enough, though. We paused at one point and got screwed up resyncing, and noticed there was about half an hour where he said nothing, and when he did it was usually one word. Other times it seems like he is reading a line of dialogue every two minutes or so.

That did seem pretty weird. I think the text file in the download zip only had 4 total Disembodio lines.

Oh man, Star Wars Holiday Special was great. It had been a while since I'd downloaded a Rifftrax (Fellowship of the Ring was my last one) but this was a great one to come back for. SWHS is so deliciously awful on it's own, that they were really able to tear into it, and the riffing on the '78 commercials was great too.

Yeah, that was my one complaint too. I accidentally paused the video once and got the rifftrax all out sync by about 10 seconds. I just had to sync it up using my best judgment about after which lines the riffing should go.

Rifftrax has a special Christmas trax available for $.99 and it states "divx download". Was it wrong to assume I would end up with a playable divx file on my computer? Because what I got was a ".tix" file that requires the divx player be installed, and that "allows access" to the movie for viewing.

It just seems to me it shouldn't be called a "divx download" given what's required.

I hate watching stuff on my computer screen. :( I was hoping to have a divx file to feed over to my TiVo.

The Star Wars Holiday Special is easily my favorite trax. Rise of the Silver Surfer wasn't bad either. The one that did disappoint was Missile to the Moon. Fred Willard is someone you would think could be great at this, but he is more of an improving guy and the stuff Mike wrote for this movie was kind of weak.

The strength of Rifftrax is really having all three of the Film Crew together. All of their recent efforts have been outstanding.

I also picked up the Santa short. It was okay for something 99 cents and since it was only 12 minutes I didn't mind watching it on my PC.

I'm disappointed that if i spend the extra cash to buy the actual disc from them it doesn't come in a case with a cover and such. It sounds like it is shipped Netflix-style in an envelope. Yeah, $16 was a bit more than I wanted it to be, but I still have to buy this to support them. I'm ordering a copy. They are going through the same hassles of film rights as Rhino so no telling how long these will stay in print anyway.

Also, these riff projects whether it be MST3K, Film Crew, Rifftrax or CM are not watch em once for me. Over time I will watch this dozens of times so it is worth the investment.

BTW, I was surprised to see the silhouette used, but I like the style and the fact they are going over the top with props. Gives it a bit different feel from MST3K. I think Mike Nelson mentioned in an interview that they had trouble with the Film Crew due to Jim Mallon. Guess Joel had no such issues as co creator and was able to do his project very MST style including the silhouettes. Granted I am assuming the person he had trouble with was Mallon since he did not give the name. Maybe it was Joel.

01-14-08, 07:21 PM
Okay, watched my copy of The Oozing Skull tonight and was very, very impressed.

The quality was much higher than the Film Crew DVDs and the riffing was also much better.

Joel has really captured the feel of MST3K with the tone of the riffing and the use of the silhouettes. Instead of doing host segments like the Film Crew tried and failed badly at they stay with the movie the entire time with the silhouettes.

As the movie starts up there is a 10 second count down as the 5 of them come on screen to take their positions. Josh Weinstein, Joel and Mary Jo on the left top to bottom and Trace and Frank on the right top to bottom. They start out of the gate riffing the movie, but stop the film 4 times for quick bits sometimes using some visual jokes with the silhouettes. These stops are very quick and for the most part were pretty funny. I especially liked Josh's love theme for the movie bit. This is a much better idea overall than trying to do scripted bits outside of the theater. Without the bots those are just destined to fail.

I give Mike Nelson a ton of credit for finding ways to keep riffing alive. His Rifftrax's are very good and tackle high profile films and he has a very low cost way of riffing that will probably be more successful than Joel's obviously expensive project. However, from a purely artistic standpoint Joel has outdone him in every way. Joel has recaptured a big part of what made MST3K so brilliant and I hope they sell enough of these to keep the project going. This is a very polished production from start to finish and is the first thing I have watched that actually seems like a true successor to MST3K. It is also a very risky project with a very iffy distribution model.

I hope Cinematic Titanic catches on and I will buy every release. After watching the first one I no longer complain about the $16 cost. That is pretty much inline with what the Film Crew DVDs cost and is a much better product. I only wish Joel had made a deal with Rhino because I don't think his current distribution model will succeed. They do send it on a real DVD and not a DVD-R, but all you get is the disc in a mailer. I also don't think most fans will be happy with just a downloaded version for $13. Maybe it will get enough attention for them to make a deal later.

If you are a fan of MST3K I can't recommend The Oozing Skull highly enough.

I agree. I actually don't care about the case. I have plenty of empty DVD cases. I would like a DVD cover. Even one I could print myself would be something.

BTW, I don't want to post any of the riffs and be a spoilar, but I will say that they spread them around pretty well among the 5 and do some pretty good group ones. That said, Josh and Frank were the standouts. They easily had the best riffs and bits in the movie.

This caused me to go read up on all the stuff that's going around in the MST3K world and man, does www.mst3k.com suck total shit or what?

The review here convinced me to watch the trailer for CT, which I wasn't really interested in, and now I am going to pick it up, maybe -- I might wait a bit and see if the download version actually gets up or not before dropping on the disc.

I'm glad they invented the RiffTrax player as well. I mean, personally, I watched The Matrix and had no trouble synching things up, although I admit I did end up fiddling with it throughout the movie to try to get it perfect, but in any case, I didn't find it the monumental hassle some seem to feel it is. Still, this is a great idea.

Yeah, I agree. Mallon apparently wanted to get in on the money Mike Nelson is making with Rifftrax.com, but doesn't have the talent Joel has to make a good competing product. Instead he used the MST3K characters that he owns the rights to and relaunched the site with some terrible animated bot cartoons and a new merchandise store. From all accounts the fans bashed the hell out of it in the MST3K forums and the relaunch is already dead.

This is the same Jim Mallon that drove away Joel Hodgson over his desire to make an MST3K movie. The movie bombed and while their efforts were focused on it they lost their deal with Comedy Central. Guy is a real genius.

http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/2822/cinematictitaniccopyas1.th.jpg (http://img523.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cinematictitaniccopyas1.jpg)http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/1151/cinematictitanic1vd4.th.jpg (http://img208.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cinematictitanic1vd4.jpg)

That's not the full size image, but you get the idea. It looks more like a cover for the movie than a cover for Cinematic Titanic's presentation of the movie, I've still got a look to change though. I need my DVD so I can get color screenshots for the back before I finish it.

^^^ Great cover!

It was great to see the old crew riffing again. It could probably benefit from an opening and/or closing monologue of some sort, even if it's just a minute or two and the mini-skits could use some work, but the rest of the jokes had me laughing. I'll be buying the next one once it's out-- hopefully sooner than later!

This is the same Jim Mallon that drove away Joel Hodgson over his desire to make an MST3K movie. The movie bombed and while their efforts were focused on it they lost their deal with Comedy Central. Guy is a real genius.Well, the movie is still pretty awesome, and my introduction to MST3K, so I can't totally blame him, especially since the show did keep going. But the website is still horrible.

I just downloaded and listened to the X-Men rifftrax. Even though I could never seem to get the sync perfect, it was still incredibly funny. I'm going to grab the rest of these soon, after I secure the necessary DVDs. If anyone reading this is considering a purchase, DO IT. You won't be disappointed.

Thanks to you as well. Not trying to hijack the thread, but here's the updated (and possibly almost final) version of my cover for those of you keeping track:
http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/2108/cinematictitanicbluecovwr6.th.jpg (http://img174.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cinematictitanicbluecovwr6.jpg)

I messed around with different colors for the back for a while, and blue and grey were the only colors that really worked. That's probably all I really need to do with it, aside from touching up the legal text at the bottom. But I get stumped on the back of covers a lot, so if anyone has any suggestions please feel free to tell me.

A friend of mine actually got his DVD already so I got to watch it tonight. Very, very funny. I'm now in the "buy everyone of these they put out" camp myself. The part where dungeon girl tells the Ryan O'Neal-like guy she was bitten by a rat and he sucks the poison out almost killed me.

Have to give a little love to Rifftrax. If you purchased the Mike Nelson Autographed copy (or any copy) of Plan 9 From Outer Space there is a new rifftrax for it available. Google video also has a free public domain copy that can be downloaded.

It is one of the funniest (granted the movie is shooting fish in a barrel) I have listened to. This is the kind of track many of us wanted when this was first released by Legend. Mike did a solo one that was okay, but none of his Legend tracks were Rifftrax quality.

Just to note since this is a Legend release it is colorized. The track was done off of the color version, but there is only one joke related to it late in the movie. It looks like Legend screwed up the colorizing (if you don't consider all the colorizing screwed up) in one quick section and they make a Hulk joke. Outside of that all the jokes work on the black and white version.

My only complaint is the track is funniest in the beginning and kind of peters out a bit towards the end. I think this movie is just so easy to beat up on you start feeling sorry for it by the end.

Nope - wasn't a screw up... totally intentional. If you follow the dialog you'll understand the effect. BYW: Plan 9 with the RiffTrax will be available for download on the RiffTrax site. Much of the humor is greatly enhanced in the color version as anyone who attended the sold out Castro Theater Live Riff this month will tell you. The RiffTrax player version of the Plan 9 Rifftrax was encoded using the Legend color version so that's the only one that will sync properly. It's one of the most popular RiffTrax at the moment.

I have a question about some of the newer public domain rifftrax (and i guess the political ads). If i buy the rifftrack, do i get the video file as well? Is the rifftrack already balanced on the video file where i could just stream it through my 360 (the Divx file) or burn it to a VCD and play the thing on a DVD player?

Looking at the newest DRM-free release it lists like 5 files you get (divx, zune, ipod, mpg-2, and mp3). I haven't bought anything in a really long time so i don't know how they are packaged anymore. I can deal with syncing an mp3 to a DVD i buy but i was hoping it would be easier with these public domain shorts or commercials the Rifftrack Crew might be allowed to distribute.

I downloaded "The Terrible Truth" short the other day. The video files have the riff track already embedded, so that's really the only file you need. They offer the riff track seperately, as the mp3 file, though I'm not sure why you'd ever need it.

The next Rifftrax, Spider-Man 3 with guest riffer James Lileks, is certainly causing a stir over at the rifftrax forum. I've never even heard of the guy.

People seem to really dislike political content in the MST3K legacy projects. The anti-Bush jokes in the Cinematic Titanic project were criticized by a lot of fans. I doubt that Lileks will make many conservative jokes. I've read his books, which are great, and there's no political content in them.

On another note, I'd highly recommend their last short, "Harm Hides At Home." It is hilarious without the riffing and even better with it. You really must see this to believe it.

"What if a monster attacked a city?" This is the shockingly novel concept behind the viral marketing triumph of the year! Filled with "fresh"* performances and "authentic"** cinematography, Cloverfield masterfully takes a page from The Blair Witch Project, reworking the "snotty 20-somethings endure trauma while repeatedly saying 'dude'" genre into something unique while still being very much the same. Look for star turns by That Girl Who Was in Mean Girls and That One Dude Who Played Eric in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

There are so many things to which drugs can be compared that to even attempt to catalog them would be an act of incomprehensible madness. Yet in this pastel colored, 1970's nightmare, two hard-of-hearing, loggorrheic pre-teens are up to the task! Have you always wondered, Are drugs like pumpkins? Like small willow saplings? Great Rifftrax news. They are doing two shorts a week for the entire month of July. The first 11 shorts in Mpeg 2 were finally enough for me to burn them onto one DVD with Nero Vision and now I can start on volume 2.

I also got my Cinematic Titanic DVD. Nice to get a real official looking DVD release and it even included a hand signed silhouette of Trace. Doomsday Machine was really funny and a bit darker than than normal MST humor. They also came up with a bit of an opening to introduce them and give a bit of a framework for why they are doing this whole thing. Short and concise, but it got the point across.

Can't wait for the next release.

BTW, Bill Corbett also wrote an open letter to Cinematic Titanic asking them to crossover and do more projects with Rifftrax. Mary Jo recently did the X-files movie with Bill and hopefully the rest can be convinced to do one or two between Cinematic Titanic episodes. A Joel & Mike riff would probably break download records for Rifftrax. Good times for MST fans.

This week they did Harry Potter 2:
http://download.rifftrax.com/files/imagecache/preview/files/PotterChamberWeb.jpg
Harry Potter is back with the second installment in the franchise that is worth more than the Tolkien, Roddenberry and Herge estates combined! Part Two lays the groundwork for the stunning revelation that shook the series: that the guy who plays Ron absolutely, 100% cannot act. I mean, that performance? What the hell was that? Every scene he's in looks like someone from Are You Being Served forced at gunpoint to mug at a level that would make the cast of Police Academy blush. If they were to spin Ronald McDonald's friend Grimace off into a series titled The Grimace Hour it would have less grimacing per hour than Ron in Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets (approximate number of hours in movie: five.)

Watch Ron pull one face after another as he teams up with Harry, Hermione, Hagrid, and Hagar the Horrible to outwit an army of spiders, battle a giant lizard, and encounter an emo-chick who lives in a toilet. And what would a Harry Potter movie be without Quidditch? Answer: Better.

Mike, Kevin, Bill and their respective self-mutilating house elves are here to riff until the Secret of the titular Chamber is revealed!

Next week we'll be getting one of my favorites, Memento!

For most of us, the experience of waking up in a strange motel room, alone and disoriented, means that you were the victim of Chinese Organ Thieves. Inconvenient, sure, but kidneys are replaceable.* And how often does it really happen?** For Leonard Shelby, however, this scenario was just another part of his daily routine.

You see, Leonard suffers from a rare form of amnesia, usually only found in protagonists in works of fiction. Unable to form any new memories, Leonard stumbles around Southern California, vowing after every meal that he will never eat a McDonald's Filet-O-Fish again. To be fair, he does have a slightly more pressing agenda than eating pre-formed patties of vague seafood: the attack that rendered him an amnesiac also resulted in the death of his wife. Through an intricate system of tattoos and notes to himself, he hopes to one day track down the killer and after making him beg for mercy, ask them who they are, why he has this gun and if they know directions to the nearest McDonalds.

Also, at one point in time during the movie, a peripheral character muses that Leonard’s condition must be like living your life backwards. Despite this being a barely coherent thought muttered by a bearded motel attendant, it's evidently license enough to tell you the entire story in reverse, making this Mike, Kevin and Bill's first ever xarTffiR!

*Just talk to the delivery guy from the Chinese food place down the street
**Every time you order from that Chinese food place

Just got my Santa Claus Conquers the Martians Cinematic Titanic DVD and watched it and they are really hitting their stride with the last two releases. This was a tough one since they are redoing a classic MST movie, but it is really, really good. I also like the PG-13 approach they are taking in the last couple of DVDs. The edgier riffs in this one helped separate it more from the original.

I've watched the original MST one so many times I was repeating the riffs in my head, but it was cool to hear the new take, plus the riffs on all the new footage in this version. There are some really good ones in here and some odd ones including a not so subtle masturbation joke from Mary Jo. They are also keeping the movie stops brief and only had one in this film. Instead they are doing a short skit before the movie starts and a bit of business at the end. It works much better and keeps to the riffing.

I really hope they keep this project going. It has delivered on the promise the Film Crew project had but with a more unique approach that separates it from Rifftrax and MST3K.

Just got my CT "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians" DVD in this afternoon's mail. I haven't watched it yet (that'll be tonight's viewing), but it's pretty cool that they stuck in a little "Thanks For Shopping at Cinematic Titanic!" slip of paper, signed by Joel.

BTW, anyone else think that Cinematic Titanic have its own thread? Or at least a change of this thread's title?

They include those with all the purchases. I have one from Trace and one from J Elvis. Nice little touch to offset the extra DVD cost. It would be nice if the thread title was changed. This is kind of an all in one Cinematic Titanic and Rifftrax thread.

I've also been pretty happy with Rifftrax. I like that they are focusing a lot on the big mainstream releases. I'm sure those trax sell better and it lets them focus on the big mainstream stuff while CT works on the obscure cheesy films. They are releasing so much that I am a few trax and shorts behind currently. I'll have to catch up during a slow DVD month next year.

The only other CT title I have is The Oozing Skull (bought right when CT launched) and I don't remember getting one of those slips with it. Of course, the DVD only came in a paper sleeve then, so I'm glad that they now put their releases in actual cases.

Their SCCtM riff was funny, but I still prefer the MST3K version. Frank's "that rocket reminds me of a penis" and the group telling him that he isn't even trying killed me.

Those of us that bought the Legend Films Reefer Madness release have another good reason to break it out again. Mike, Bill and Kevin have added a new commentary for it and its excellent. The Mike commentary on the DVD was pretty good, but this track is one of their best. Reefer Madness is such a prime candidate for riffing.

I haven't listened to the new riff for this (yet), but it definitely does have one of my favorite Rifftrax write ups:

Now that marijuana (aka "reefer", "bud", "stick", "whoopie doopie", "happy grass", "tingle weed", "Abe Lincoln", "the halt", "muffin", "chew", "altoid", "the Fonz", "little Ricky", "sleestack", "chumba wumba", "red dynamite", "the oaf", "fat man", "little boy", "Richard Milhouse Nixon", "Area 51") has been eliminated as a scourge, it's interesting to go back and look at the film that was almost singlehandedly responsible for its demise. Yes, Reefer Madness let the world know that even a single dose of marijuana (aka "whip scorpion", "Batman", "Holyfield vs. Lewis", "the Kremlin", "babelfish", "Mason Reese", "chowhound", "slab bacon") caused insane laughter, enhanced skill at ragtime piano, the inability to avoid hitting old men with your car, and defenestration.

Twilight has great riff potential. While I enjoyed it in a guilty pleasure/great premise sort of way, the movie was horribly made and acted.

Been avoiding buying any rifftrax until I catch up on all my MST3K/CT/FC DVDs, but might get this one.

Not sure if this is the proper thread for this post, but Rifftrax released factory DVD's of eight titles (and two Shorts compilations) featuring Mike, Kevin, and Bill last week. The features are the eight movies put out by Legend that Mike did solo riffs for a few years back (NOTLD, Carnival of Souls, Plan 9 etc.) with all new snarky commentary. A nice alternative for those of us unable to use the normal synching method. The discs are reasonable at $9.95 each and come highly recommended (by me). The riffs are on par with the Film Crew, alas, no host segments but humorous movie-related original songs play over the Main Menu. You can get these at the Rifftrax site or through the link at Satellite News.

Twilight was great, but Casablanca was kind of lame. They tried really hard and the movie did have some places here and there for good lines ("We finally found him, a Frenchman that fights back" comes to mind), but overall I found it a very mediocre track.

They continue to have issues with the full length VOD stuff. First Planet of the Dinosaurs had a complete meltdown at the live show, then the VOD ended up messed up and had to be redone. Now Voodoo Man ran into similar issues and had to be pulled and redone. Hopefully they get all this stuff ironed out.

I liked it but they recycled enough stuff that I noticed from when I bought the solo one when it first came out years ago. Same with the other Legend titles they redid.

The question to ask yourself is, would the solo one be improved by having more than one person saying the jokes?

It's just YouTube. You can't even mention that you've thought about seeing a movie on YouTube without that studio immediately filing a copyright infringement warning on you.

It is pretty sad that they don't appreciate the easy revenue being generated for them by an endeavour like Rifftrax (as with xmiyux's purchase of TWILIGHT). I can understand it if someone posts an entire movie there without permission (not that it doesn't happen at a million other sites anyways :( ), but these guys were just posting clips. Too bad that doesn't fall under some kind of fair use guidelines, but I guess not.

Warner Music is also pretty anal. They removed the sound from a couple of my clips because of the music in them. One was a clip from the 70's drive-in movie MALIBU BEACH (not a Warner title, but the clip might have driven some folks to seek it out), the other from a Taiwanese movie that blatantly used American rock songs on its soundtrack without paying fees, and which I posted largely as an example of the practise in that region. Of course, its much easier to make a few clicks at Youtube than it is to go after the Chinese film industries, which have been pilfering American and European music for decades without permission!

Rifftrax live event was awesome. The new short, Flying Stewardesses, was outstanding. Jonathan Coulton did two great songs and Lotax's shorts were ok. The riffs on Plan 9 were changed up quite a bit so it was definitely worth seeing this live. I will definitely be willing to pay the $14.50 for the next live event. Seeing live riffings with a crowd is really great and this ranked up there with seeing Cinematic Titanic live.

Only downside is I would have thought Veronica Belmont could have memorized the very few lines she had to say, but that really is a minor complaint. Great live show.

I wanted to go, but had a meeting with our pastor about our upcoming wedding. I guess there's next time.

The live show was great! It was a different experience, watching it in a theater full of people. Usually when I'm taking in a MST3K/RT/CT, I'm by myself on the couch or bed, in my PJs (I like to watch them late at night as God intended).

I hope they do more of these in the future.

And I'm ashamed to admit that that was the first time I had seen Plan 9 all the way through. What a shitty movie.

My wife and I really liked the Rifftrax Live! event, too. The audience was full of 20-something hipster-doofuses and couples in their 50s-60s (we're 30 and 31). There were two idiot 13-year-old boys right behind us who spent the first fifteen minutes talking about how dumb this thing was, clearly not understanding what their parents had brought them to. When the satellite feed went out during the short, they said, "Good, this is stupid." My wife turned around and told them if they don't like it to leave or keep their comments to themselves. I was flabergasted... and turned on.

So, what did they do?

Didn't you see that Dogmatica got turned on? The kids apparently got a show they weren't expecting. Hopefully they didn't make the same comments...

There was a guy in our row who thought he should join in on the riffing. The girls sitting behind him told him to shut up rather quickly.

Love the show, but my theater was dead. People here just didn't know what they were watching, it seemed.

I won the biggest geek award in my theater by showing up with my full-sized Tom Servo puppet.

People in my theater would have asked you "Hey what you doing with that there gumball machine?"

Lotax's shorts were ok.

First one was good, second was eh. Worst part was, and apparently my theater agreed with, was the stupid stuff with him being on the phone in the beginning and the very end.

Everything else was good

Very amused by their informative movie trivia "Did you Know?" cards before the movie started.

I watched the Rifftrax of Plan 9 From Outer Space last night. I was kind of disappointed by it. There were only a few funny lines, but the movie was just too boring.

I brought my 14 year old son, but he was raised watching MST3K reruns on tape and DVD and enjoyed it just as much as the 30 somethings that grew up watching the show on Comedy Central. He also loved Cinematic Titanic live.

Glad your son liked it, darkside.

No extra show in the theater, Trevor. ;)

Chew, they said, "Okay, I'm sorry." Halfway through the movie, one turned to the other and said, "Are those guys going to make comments about the movie the whole time?" Ugh...

Oh, I should add the boys were sitting in the middle two seats of a four-seat row, the row where the two outside seats each have a sign on them explaining that patrons are welcome to sit here yet if a person in a wheelchair enters the theater with an able-bodied companion to please give up the seat so they might sit together.

So these two plebeians are sitting in the center two of four seats so no one else can take the other two. The theater is packed, by the way, with people standing in the aisles until they finally find people who will move in to make room for them. A lot of Minnesota Nice going on. But not from these two. No, they decide to take all four seats by sitting in the middle. The parents who brought them (and who clearly didn't prep them for what they were in for) came down to say 'hi' before the show and the mom lauded the kids, "Wow, what great seats! This is a really good idea! You guys really did a good job!" We're praising 12-year-olds for choosing theater seats now?

The parents said they liked the seats so much they might come down to sit there, too. One of the boys says, "You can't sit there, it's only for handicap people." Clearly, this bright one didn't read the fifteen or so words on the sign on the seat, just saw the stickperson-in-wheelchair picture and made his best guess. The parents asked what they would do if someone wanted to sit there and the other boy said, "I'll just throw my leg up on the seat and pretend it's all lame and gimply." The parents laughed. Clearly, these are sensitive people who are proud to be role models to these young boys.

I don't care if they're only twelve and whether I shouldn't expect much maturity from that age. These boys were idiots, tried and true.

Any chance we could lock this up and start an official Rifftrax / Cinematic Titanic / MST3K DVDs thread?

I'm just fining out about these rifftrax. Gonna watch the twilight one later on. Are there any Lindsay Lohan trainwrek films availabe? (Georgia rule or I know who killed me)? Those seem perfect for riffing.

The Twilight riff is my absolute favorite so far.

I know they riffed Crossroads which had Mariah Carey and Britney Spears iirc.

Don't miss Road House. I think that's the funniest one I've heard. The one for The Matrix was also memorable.
