My brother and I are having an arguement as to what would be a better storyline for a potential Green Lantern movie. I say do a fall and rise storyline of Hal Jordan, and he says expand focus to the whole G.L. Corp. What do you think?

Well, since only a handful of people know who the heck GL is (I've always found the name and his power ring to be kind of ridiculous) Hollywood is probably better off just sticking to the main character instead of including the GL Corps, where all the aliens and GL variations will look like STAR WARS prequel rejects.

You would really have to go through a long history for Hal's turn to Parallax and even then you have to deal with a similiar situation that you have with Venom in Spider-man.. that is.. How the hell do you talk about Parallax without going into a mega cross over that was Zero Hour?

As long it stars Jack Black - I'm there!

I've often thought of how I'd do a GL series and my idea is to have 2 trilogies with a similar structure to the Star Wars saga. The first is about the rise and fall of Hal Jordan. It ends with the destruction of the GL Corps and Hal becomes Parrallax. Movie 4 introduces Kyle Rayner who becomes the next GL. John Stewart and Guy Gardner would find out about Kyle and help train him. Hal would not even be in this movie. However, he does return in the 5th installment where he Kyle almost dies at his hands, but Ganthet bails him out at the last minute. The final movie would more or less be an adaptation of Rebirth where they manage to defeat Parrallax and free Hal. However, I would deviate from the comic by killing off Hal. The whole story ends with Kyle, John, and Guy ready to rebuild the Corps.

You'll be lucky to see ONE GL flick, let alone 6!

LOL. That's what I was thinking. I do like your idea, though, Cartload. There's just no way in hell any studio will make that.

And it has such promise as a film. So sad.

I like the idea of the Corps, but having one hero would probably be more accessible to the 'mainstream'. Maybe start with Hal, then on sequel/s either show more of the Earth GLs or expand to the universal Corps. Hmm...how about a one-hour tv show? That way they could tell all sorts of stories, both 'GL' and 'GLC', and more of the GLC characters could become fleshed out. Of course, comic book tv shows don't have a very good history, do they?

I always thought the story "No Evil Shall Escape My Sight" from the GL/GA series would make an excellent movie. It was even adapted into a novel so why not a movie. They would have to just throw in the origin of GL somewhere in it and a few aliens.

I think GL is one comic that just wont translate well to movies...Its just to "cosmic" a story for it to really mesh well with the general public.

Well, like I said, that's just how I'd do it or like to see it done... in a delusional perfect world. :)

Personally, I'd like to see a GL movie, as GL was one my favorite DC characters of the '60s. Probably because of my preference for SF related comics, and nobody did them (or GL) like Gil Kane.
Being a big classic SF reader, I suppose the recognition of E.E. "Doc" Smith's Lensman space opera as the basis (it's clearly much more than an "inspiration") for Green Lantern didn't hurt.
I don't think you could do a GL flick without telling his origin story, and I think that would have to start with a prelude on the origin of the GL Corps and the Guardians of the Universe. Something along the lines of the Krypton segment from Donner's Superman.
IMHO, J. Michael Straczynski would be a great candidate for directing a GL movie. This is based mostly on my regard for Babylon 5, and also on his opinion (that I share) that "Hal Jordan is Green Lantern."
Kyle Rayner and Guy Gardner are so second string.

How about Neal Adams? His art work during his stint on GL/GA in the early seventies was just spectacular.

Yeah, put JMS behind it - the only comic writer arrogant enough to drop references in his comics about his OWN works and talk about how great they are. He's also more suited to a linked, serialized format where he can have freedom with decompressed storylines. His standalone work doesn't even compare.
The easiest way to tell a Green Lantern movie would be to just tell Hal's story. Have Abin Sur come around, then he joins the Corps, then Sinestro goes rogue, then he stops him, the end. Can't get much more formulaic than that, but it would be the best way to make a Green Lantern movie without confusing everyone.

Agreed. However, since Sinestro was assigned to train Hal, I wonder if it would be interesting to play up this dynamic. Do something like Training Day with Hal in the Ethan Hawke role. Sintestro would be the Denzel Washington figure. The movie would start out with Jordan having been a GL for a short while. I would utilize a few flasbacks to show his encounter with Abin Sur and other background info.
Man I wish I could come up with something more original, but Hollywood producers are just remaking old movies and tv shows, so I guess I'm not doing too bad here.

Why? If I may ask.
Oh, because of the very source of his power is such a common, earth-bound item: a lantern...and a green one, at that. For such a cosmic bunch of heroes made up of aliens and other life-forms, an object like a lantern seem almost quaint. Also, the fact that the power rings are helpless against yellow cracks me up.
Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed comic books and I know that almost all comic characters are ridiculous in one form or another. (A guy who stretches after drinking gingold? A dude who has superpowers for one hour after swallowing a pill? A teenager who can turn into stone? A fat guy who can bounce around?) But I've always found this inspiration to be especially novel.
Other than that, I have no problem with Hal Jordan's character.
