View Full Version : Take the Economist's Film Quiz

A pretty interesting film quiz. A bit different from the usual ones as it deals with everything from Godard to Spielberg to Lord of the Rings to Chaplin.

http://www.economist.com/diversions/quiz.cfm/filmquiz

I did pretty pitifully. About 4 out of 13. I got tripped up by one because the answer was so obvious I thought it was a trick question.

I got 5 and guessed on every one except for the question about Spirited Away.

I did exactly the same.

I got 4/13, and only flat out knew two of them, used logic to guess the third, and the forth one I got right was just a blind guess.

6/13, and also guessed on all but Spirited Away and the Snow White/Star Wars DVD questions.

How can you not get the Snow White/Star Wars question anyway?

6/13 -- Would have only bet on two of my answers.

Same here except I only got 3 right. The Spirited Away question was the only one I was sure of.

7/13.

They really mined the obscure index.

I missed the Oscars question because I thought it had to be more than 40% of the Best Picture winners that were dramas. If you go to the page they link to, they break down the winners by genre. "Historical" gets 15%, and "War" gets 8%. Come on, most of those are dramas.

Got 4, only sure on Spirited Away and Disney/Star Wars.

Also regarding this question: In 2002 the president of the Philippines and four economics ministers modeled for the Philippine Tatler dressed as characters from which film?
So they wore suits and sunglasses? Wow! How could I have missed that story!?!

4/13, but it would have been 6/13 if I'd gone with my first, gut choice.

7/13. Not too bad, but a few were lucky guesses. :)

6/13.

I suppose it helps that I read The Economist until recently.

I got 8. Most of my answers were educated guesses.

Lame.

Even though I got 8 right, most of these questions have little, to nothing, to do with actual movies, and are more about societal impacts, industry, trends and personality's private lives that have no bearing on actual film.

I mean, Leaders of The Philippines dressed as movie characters? Harry Potter in Caledonia?

I just want to punch whoever came up with these questions, not because they're difficult or obscure, but because it's just NOT a film quiz as stated.

6 correct. Amazingly I missed the first seven questions and got the last six right. Hooray for weird distributions! :)

How can you not get the Snow White/Star Wars question anyway?

I got it right, but it did make me pause and wonder whether Snow White had sold over two million copies (it said millions not million). How many copies has it sold, and what do they define as "quickly"?

Yep, that was my exact reasoning as well, I didn't think they would allow an answer to be that subjective.

Seems obvious now but I just cruised right past that answer and picked the more entertaining one:
"Have been criticised for their lack of morality by Islamic film reviewers"

Guessed on most and got 3/13, and I missed the Oscars question for the same reason as already stated in spoilers.

That was not a movie quiz.

I think I got the same 5 right that every one else did.
