The Beatles - Yellow Submarine DVD question
Does anyone know which chapter the song "Baby You're a Rich Man" is on?
Also, is this DVD out of print?

One little quibble -- although a few have mentioned the removal of "Baby You're A Rich Man" in the DVD version, the few seconds missing are of little importance.

The DVD is the British version. The old VHS was the US version.
At 1:16, "Baby You're A Rich Man" begins as Ringo takes the hole
out of his pocket and puts it on the big blue bubble, releasing the gas.
In the UK version, the song abruptly stops, even before the singing
would have started, and the boys meet their alter ego band,
followed by the "Hey Bulldog" sequence, and then Jeremy's rescue.
In the US version, the song fades out after the first few lines,
followed by a very short, different sequence leading to the rescue.
Some of the songs on the new soundtrack compilation are only heard
for a few seconds:
(1:08) "With A Little Help From My Friends" fades out after two lines.
(0:56) A line from "Think For Yourself" echoes twice with no music tracks.
(0:19) Only the instrumental intro to "Love You To" is heard.
On the other hand, near the end, before the real Beatles appear,
"It's All Too Much" is a longer version, not available anywhere but in the film,
with one extra verse, which should have been put on the soundtrack.
Edit: I almost forgot, a piece of "A Day In The Life" is heard at 0:22,
and that song's not on the soundtrack at all.

The Yellow Submarine dvd was presented in widescreen. Sadly this was achieved by matteing a 1.37:1 aspect ratio. It got a bit of flack over this issue since the top and bottom of the frame got chopped. Hopefully a complete version will be released.

Fucking MGM and thier bullshit non-anamorphic 1.66:1 transfers... That's my only complaint.

Re: The Beatles - Yellow Submarine DVD question
Yes the thread is a few years old, sorry. But today while Christmas shopping for the Yellow Submarine DVD I was simply blown away that NOBODY carries this classic piece of Beatles treasure !! WHAT is going on? Anybody? How could the studio discontinue ANYTHING Beatles related? (lawsuit?)
Even on Amazon there is only ONE listed for $28. WOW. I am seriously bummed as i wanted to turn a few friends onto this great movie.
Can anybody follow up with what the problem is?

Re: The Beatles - Yellow Submarine DVD question
As mentioned in the thread, the DVD was presented in non-anamorphic Widescreeen, in a 1.66:1 aspect ratio. And to make matters worse, the aspect ratio was derived (cropped) from a 1.37:1 source. I suppose it's possible that the OAR for theatrical purposes *was* 1.66:1, but it's kind of hard to believe considering how cramped everything looks. The DD 5.1 soundtrack was nice, though; and the extras --- including a commentary track -- were pretty darn good. The original mono audio track was also included.
It sure would be nice if *someone* would reissue this movie to Blu-ray/DVD in its OAR (whatever that happens to be); and with proper anamorphic enhancement for DVD -- assuming the Widescreen aspect ratio is appropriate.
Believe it or not, this movie has only been issued to home video twice: Once in 1987 to VHS, and once in 1999 to DVD. That's it!!

Either way, the non-anamorphic DVD looks great. If it fills your HDTV, the video quality doesn't pixilate or look off at all.

Re: The Beatles - Yellow Submarine DVD question
What about Let It Be? It was only released once AFAIK, in 1980/81 on VHS and LD. It's long overdue for a DVD release.
Yellow Submarine DVD doesn't look that bad IMO.

I just watched it and my HDA1 upscales it to 1080i, window boxes it and it doesn't look that bad. A new print in BD would be the disc to own!!!

Re: The Beatles - Yellow Submarine DVD question
Thanks for the follow up posts folks.
Great to see there is a buzz for Beatles stuff after all these years on non-release. It's such a pity, because at the Beatles shop in Vegas (for the Love show) they have all kinds of Yellow Submarine merchandise. (i bought the nifty lunch pail, which i use every day) ... but they have no Yellow Submarine DVD.. so many kids today wont have a clue as to what those cartoon characters actually are! (blue meanies, etc). Damn shame. I hope they figure this out and get on with making a better version dvd.
Cheers!
ps. the Love show in Vegas was amazing.... highly recommend it.
