Get Scarlet Street for $12.48. It's a great Edward G. Robinson noir.

Glad I held off getting these during the 20%-off sale. Thanks!

I'll be getting Kieslowski, Griffith, Kar-Wai, Edison, and maybe Buster Keaton.

Is the Krzysztof Kieslowski set at $49 a price drop we will see reflected at other stores in the near future? It says release date 7/18 but this has been out for a while now.

Totally agreed. Not to mention it's the best DVD version of this film available. Beautiful transfer. Too bad I paid twice that price

Great deal on all Michael Haneke films. If you've never seen Funny Games, I highly recommend it. Though I'd do some research before purchasing, as it's definitly not for everyone.

I was thinking about giving The Man Who Laughs a blind buy. It is usually priced at $20.97, but is $14.98 with the sale.

Wow! Some fantastic stuff in this sale. Here's what I'd recomend:

Silent films:

F W MURNAU COLLECTION (5D) $ 59.98
FRITZ LANG EPIC COLLECTION (5D) $ 49.98
THE DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS COLLECTION $ 49.98

The first two are filled with amazing films, and the third is just a lot of fun. All three are highly recommended and well worth the price.

THE EDISON-INVENTION OF MOVIES $ 49.98

This was great too, but only if you're interested in how the language of film evolved and what some of the first movies were like.

ASPHALT $ 14.98
WARNING SHADOWS $ 14.98

Two pre-orders. These are both reviewed in this month's Silent DVD. (Link in sig.)

GENERAL $ 12.48

The Keaton set is also a great bargain, but if you can't afford the whole set, I'd start out with this one. The General is widely considered Keaton's best feature, and this also has his most hilarious short, Cops.

THE RETURN $ 14.98

If I had to recommend only one film off this list, it would be this one. A recent Russian film about two children who go on a fishing trip with their father, a man who they haven't seen in 12 years. It is a movie that you can watch over and over again.

THE SACRIFICE $ 19.98

This is going to be a blind buy for me. It's the last film of one of my favorite directors, Andrei Tarkovsky.

Aw, to hell with it - just a little restraint. That Edison set has been sitting on my wish list for a little too long, might be time to pounce.

Probably not. For some reason DDD has a habit of listing sales items as price drops and preorders, but they almost always revert to their regular price when the sale ends. The only exception seems to be the stuff in their $5.98 sale, which never seems to end (but I think those are all discontinued items that they're trying to liquidate).

Wow, this is a good sale. There is so much that I want from Murnau, Griffith, Lang, Kieslowski, Parajanov, Wong Kar-Wai, Tarkovsky, von Stroheim, Keaton, etc., but alas I don't think it fits in the budget at this point. I just spent so much on the 20% off sale that I don't think another DVD splurge is justified. Too bad.

Are these cheaper than they would be during the 20% sale? So many good things....Murnau and Lang sets, Broken Blossoms, Man Who Laughs...so broke.

Anybody know how long this lasts? That FRITZ LANG EPIC COLLECTION (5D) $ 49.98 has been on my wishlist forever. I wouldn't mind getting the MASTERWORKS OF GERMAN HORROR as well and maybe the Dead or Alive Trilogy.

To answer naitram's question, I would have to say that if memory serves me right, this sale is definitely cheap than what the prices would have been at the 20% off sale.

Jan Dara features better acting and is far more scenic than the usual crap you'd find at midnight on Cinemax...but it's still basically softcore porn with scores of nude-from-the-waist-up shots of actress Christy Chung. Worth a look, but has little replay value. If you have Netflix, you might want to make it a rental instead.

Without a doubt, if I didn't already own them, recommend Tarkovsky's THE MIRROR and SACRIFICE.
