anyone know whats up with ddd's robin hood men in tights? I really want to pick this movie up without getting the mel brooks collection but the listing for the movie has no info at all. I want to make sure I get widescreen.
It says it's not out until September 6th. I haven't heard anything about this, though. The only way it's currently available is in the Mel Brooks Set.

Yes, I would highly recommend it as a blind buy. DVDTalk has two great reviews on the set if you have any doubts.

Anybody know if Inspector Gadget: Original Animated Series is the complete series or just selected episodes?
I have that set, and I told DDD that their sysnopsis was erroneous, but they never changed it. Its only the first season. NOT 3 SEASONS. Its something like 22 episodes. I couple of the episodes are terrible transfers with the tracking
off (bouncy) from their VHS, but still worth it if you liked that show.

I've got a question about Bill Me Later. I know you've got the 90 days, no interest, which makes it pretty inticing to me. But what are the criteria for a first time BML customer? I have good credit (never late, and pay at least the minimum every month). I seem to remember some people that were using BML getting their orders cancelled because they were large, and that was their first BML order.
I was planning on placing another order on Tuesday for about $300 or so, but don't want it to get cancelled for whatever reason. Probably what I'll end up doing to be safe is order the couple items I absolutely *need* (Dead Zone: S4) on my established debit card, and then some other items on the BML. If it gets cancelled, I'll just have to wait till next sale on those.
Any feedback on BML would be appreciated.

Would anyone recommend Mr. Arkadin as a blind buy? I love Citizen Kane and Touch of Evil and the whole story behind this movie getting made sounds interesting as well.

I wanted to get the Werner Herzog Collection, but I had to cut myself off from spending more. I think that price is right, though. As for the Herzog/Kinski Collection, I want that as well, but it's been OOP for a while now, I believe.

I've only seen parts of it, but from what I've seen it is a phenomenal film. The fact that everything seems intact on the disc and its low price made me jump on it. Plus I've liked every Kar Wai film I've seen so far...all two of 'em.

I've got a question about Bill Me Later. I know you've got the 90 days, no interest, which makes it pretty inticing to me. But what are the criteria for a first time BML customer? I have good credit (never late, and pay at least the minimum every month). I seem to remember some people that were using BML getting their orders cancelled because they were large, and that was their first BML order.
I was planning on placing another order on Tuesday for about $300 or so, but don't want it to get cancelled for whatever reason. Probably what I'll end up doing to be safe is order the couple items I absolutely *need* (Dead Zone: S4) on my established debit card, and then some other items on the BML. If it gets cancelled, I'll just have to wait till next sale on those.
Any feedback on BML would be appreciated.
I tried placing an order using Bill Me Later and it was cancelled on me. But my credit sucks so I was kind of expecting that.

Yes the set is definitely worth it for that price. There are some real gems in the set plus all the commentaries from Werner Herzog on the discs are very very good.
Stoszek, Little Dieter Needs to Fly and Lessons in Darkness were highlights of the set for me. Enigma of Kaspar Hauser is also very good. Heart of Glass and Even Dwarfs Started Small are very experimental and somewhat bizarre but very interesting. I haven't had a chance to watch Fata Morgana yet but I've read good things about it. Go for it!

Does anyone know how often DDD updates their "Best Sellers" on the main page? It would at tleast be helpful if they put a data last updated for reference because I'm beginnning to think it's just a way they list the DVD's they believe are popular and want to sell. Anyone every look into this or know the details?
It would be helpful if the list was updated daily to reflect the sale but judging what people are buying I doubt it since Dazed & Confused : Criterion surely should have broken the Top 20 by now.

Just how good is this? I wanted to get into it when the series premiered, but I just never made that attempt to watch an episode. The thing is, I love all things "extraterestrial" so i really think I would like it, but with the exception of one person on the next to last page of thread #1, I have not seen anyone else buying it.

It's not even extraterrestrial. And I really, really hate that show. I won't get into details, but the penultimate episode of the first season had a scene that was so revolting to me I erased that episode immediately without even watching the last couple of minutes.

Oh man...your tastes and mine are very similar. You might want to take a gander at my collection, linked below in my signature.
If you're a fan of horror and noir, you should consider some of the Italian giallos. I take it you know what they are? Stuff like "Blood and Black Lace", "Deep Red", "The Killer Must Kill Again", etc. Anchor Bay, Blue Underground, NoShame have all put out some nice giallos on DVD. The reason I mention the giallo in particular is because, to me, it melds elements of both noir and horror---lots of red herrings, mysterious people lurking in the shadows, hot women, blood, and gore.
If you're like me, $10 is a magic number. If I can get a good movie for less than that, I'm all over it. With that in mind, here's a few giallos that are affordable:
Blood and Black Lace
The Killer Must Kill Again
The Lucio Ercoli Death Box Set
Opera (Dario Argento, it might be OOP)
Stagefright (or Stage Fright)
Black Belly Of The Tarantula

Ahh.. Finally done with 40 pages of threads, and you were the first person to ask that question. I was going to ask the same question. I tried looking it up on dvdpricesearch.com, and it didn't have any listing at DeepDiscountDVD.com either. I want to pick it up too.
Also - Where's the Simpsons 7th Season Marge Head? Yesterday it said this item is not available, and now it does not even show up at DDD.

Most people on this board are simply rabid film buffs, and as such are extremely knowledgeable about film of all genres. Being a film/DVD enthusiast involves constantly looking for information about most every title ever released in your areas of interest, no matter how obscure, or what era/region they come from. This board and others are excellent ways to feed that interest.
The question of "where the urge comes from" is pretty unanswerable. You might as well ask why people are who they are.

I still have not gotten any shipment of the Fox film noirs from the B2G1F sale even though they are in-stock and I was told they would right away.
Same here, even though my order from this sale has already shipped. I emailed customer service about this early in the week and still have yet to receive a response from them (unacceptable). So I called yesterday morning to talk to customer service about this and they said 2 of the 3 titles were in-stock (since Boomerang has been pulled) and he didn't understand why they were listed as backorder. He said he'll fix my order and they will ship on Monday (order status still says backordered though). I forgot to ask what I'll be charged since now I'm only getting 2 movies instead of the 3 for the price of 2. We'll see how I end up getting charged and whether I'll need to call back.
Looks like you're going to need to call DDD customer service to fix this since they are not backordered.

Well, the films included are completely different in each collection. The Herzog/Kinski Collection is a collaboration collection while the Herzog Collection is solely Herzog.

I was on DDD's order history checking out how much I've spent over the past 3 or 4 sales (a lot!). Anyways, I noticed that everytime I paid the extra $6.95 for shipping, I was never actually charged the $6.95 for shipping. I guess this is only the case since in every order, at least a couple DVD's were backordered. Since DDD only charges for the items that ship, the initial shipment that goes expedited only charges for teh DVDs that ship (but not the extra shipping charge). When the backordered items come in, they are charged as they ship. In the end, the extra $6.95 is never charged. This happened to me on 3 occasions over the past 3-4 sales.
Anyone else have a similar experience? Can we assume that expedited shipping is therefore free if you know at least one of the DVDs in the order is backordered?

marge head season 7 is RARE RARE RARE these days. they obviously overproduced the homer head (it's still everywhere- i've seen it at sam's and bjs forever) but the marge head seems to be OOP everywhere! i think so many people bitched about the change of packaging after the homer head that they underproduced the marge head.
if you want the head packaging in the future order them up at the release date.
i WAS going to order marge at the beginning of the sale and forgot (it WAS in stock before the sale kicked in) and obviously got sold out.

<b>CEMETARY MAN</b> is a fantastic film, beautifully shot, very fun, very macabre, and utterly unique. Directed by Michele Soavi, who was an understudy of Dario Argento AND Terry Gilliam...and who obviously learned some amazing things from both directors. Soavi's done a few other solid films, but <b>CEMETARY MAN</b> is his best...and one of the best Italian horror films, period. If your tastes are even slightly off-kilter, this is a fantastic blind buy. I'm so glad it's finally being released---I've lived with a VCD copy of a full-frame VHS for far too long.

"The Long Good Friday" was recommended somewhere in this thread. I tried looking it up, and it sounded like it might be worth a blind buy at DDD, but first I'd appreciate it if someone who has seen could give me an idea of the profanity level. If it's anything like your average Quentin Tarantino movie or Goodfellas or The Big Lebowski, that's too much for me. The reviews specifically mentioned the violence level, but no specifics on "adult language". In the old days Blazing Saddles was considered filthy "adult language". Nowadays Blazing Saddles seems very clean compared to many recent movies.

I have a question about DDD's shipping system. I made an order the other day that has not yet shipped. Today I needed to make an order and have it sent to a *different* address, so I changed the shipping information in my account. After placing that order, I then changed my shipping information back to the way it was.
My question is, will DDD remember the *different* address that went along with the most recent order, or will it ship the item to the shipping address currently specified?

But you can't be 100% sure something is going to be backordered.
On my order confirmation it listed a few titles as such, but when it shipped
the next morning everything was included. Still, with the size orders a lot of
us make during the sale, $6.95 is a drop in the bucket :)

According to a DVD review at digitallyobsessed, this isn't a pan & scan title but is instead the native format.

Memphis Belle is a 1.66 Letterbox widescreen transfer (non-anamorphic) with pan & scan on the flipside.

I noticed some people have been getting some of the titles individually for about $7 each with the discount. But the whole box is only 17.57 with the discount, which is 4.34 at title. Much better deal. (Although the whole set is pretty barebones)
Only gripe for me is the sale ends before the new Bogie/Bacall set and Syriana are released. Why cant the sale go another 48 hours?
(also covered in the faq, but i still dont get why they dont offer the "hold order until complete" like other stores.)
Great deal for Eraserhead, but I dont think they sell Short Films of David Lynch, which I've also been meaning to pick up.

I started this last year as an experiment, because I was curious as to how much we spent (as a whole). The figures were pretty astounding, so I did it again in November, and now here in June again. I don't think it really serves much of a purpose, except for proving that we're all pretty much off our rockers, and oh yeah, padding my post count. :)
Sometime between now and the next sale, I'll probably modify this program, or write another one that can keep track of individual titles, so people can see what's most popular and whatnot. That wouldn't be so bad if everyone posted their orders in the same format, but they don't. So we'll see how that goes.

I received my shipping confirmation e-mail today, and it's got a UPS tracking number. Being in Canada, I obviously don't want that because of their stupid brokerage fee scam. I called customer support to try to change the shipping method before it goes out, but 'apparently' it can't be done (even though it is still in the warehouse). The person I spoke to tried to assure me that I selected 3-5 day shipping. Obviously that's not the case and I told her that there seemed to be a lot of shipping 'upgrades' and that that is what most likely what happened here.
Very frustrating, as I'll have to refuse it and re-order. I know DDD is trying to improve service with these upgrades, but they need to realize that sometimes people use particular shipping methods for reasons other than because they're cheaper.
If DDD Dave is still reading this thread, please try and address this situation!

Between BB, CC, and Target Family Guy V3 is usually on sale for $19.99 every few weeks (Target had it for that price last week). But after tax, the price ends up being nearly the same at DDD with the 20% (it's only 11 cents more at DDD's sale figuring the 8.25% NY tax I'd have to pay at a B&M).

i bet if you phoned they would refund you the money if it really matters to you- and you make a good case over the phone and are nice about it.
using the phone with these vendors is ALWAYS recommended as far as i'm concerned (instead of email)...
and i've ALWAYS gotten co-operation from DDD (i've had a couple media mail shipments go missing over the last 5 years with them).

My order supposedly "shipped" on Saturday, but the UPS tracking number they sent me is still not in UPS's system. UPS is usually pretty good about updating as soon as they get the package, so I'm thinking that DDD has just packaged it to go to UPS, and it's still in the warehouse waiting for pickup.
I've had this happen with other shipments as well, where I'd get the email, and then when I get the package, the original postmark would be 3-4 days after the emailed ship date.
I don't mind if it sits in the warehouse for a couple days before shipping, but don't tell me something's shipped when it actually hasn't. If I pay for two-day shipping and someone says it ships on a certain date, I expect it to be at my door two days from that date.
Dave, if you can look into this situation, I'd be very grateful. I'm not sure if it's something that can be addressed easily, but it is a little peeve of mine, and I'm sure other people feel the same way.

Just FYI, be sure to check your Lord Of War to make sure it's a corrected version before opening (in case you aren't aware of the situation with this disc). It should have a sticker over the tech grid stating 2.40:1.

Something similar happened to me. I ordered the Yakuza Papers box set on the first day of the sale, then I noticed that it went down in price by a few bucks. I did the calculations, and it came to $3.19. I e-mailed customer service about the price difference and asked that it be refunded to my CC, and they did. You just have to know what the original price you ordered it at was. Hey, every penny counts!

I am thinking of purchasing the 4400 as a blind buy, but I wanted to know would people recommend it? What exactly is it about (I know the third season just started on USA last night).
Over the past century or so (since the 1930s?), people have been randomly disappearing. One day, all 4400 of these individuals come back at once. They haven't aged a day since they were 'taken'... and they start to each develop different 'superpowers'. The plot is basically X-Men meets X-Files, with a government agency investigating the phenomenon and working with the 4400 as they integrate back into society.
Is it worth it? Well, that's a *really* tough call. I loved the first season. But the 2nd season was very mediocre, in my opinion... with only 1 or 2 standout episodes. The rest was boring melodrama. The whole season it seemed like NOTHING was happening until you got to the last episode or 2.
The start of Season 3 last night wasn't exactly stellar either. It is far too soap opera for my taste, I guess. And the writing isn't exactly compelling, given how cool the subject matter could be.
So, it's a tough call. I'd definitely recommend the first season, especially for the $10 or so. That's a steal. But it stalls from there on, so far.

I never understand why some people get so paranoid about DDD's shipping. I've never had a problem with them and considering it's FREE shipping, my orders have always arrived in a timely fashion. BTW, did the movie come out after season 5 or 6?It came out the summer after season 5 and before season 6.

I never understand why some people get so paranoid about DDD's shipping. I've never had a problem with them and considering it's FREE shipping, my orders have always arrived in a timely fashion. Considering the sale started Thursday night, I don't think enough time has elapsed for people to start fretting over where their orders are.
Happens every year... people get free shipping on an order that has 40+ discs in it, and start calling for blood when it hasn't shipped with 24 hours. Or hasn't arrived within 48.

DDD did, at one time, carry "The Short Films of David Lynch," but it's been missing from their site for several months now.
Occasionally, in-print items will vanish from their site (and wishlists) without a trace. I know that I was planning on picking up both "The Short Films of David Lynch" and the Japanese flick "Freeze Me" from this sale, but I can't find either one on their site. (Also, I believe I had both on my wishlist just for this occasion.)
Haven't heard about the Lynch shorts going out of print. It's still available from other online retailers so I don't think that's the reason.

Have made three orders so far. The first order (4 DVDs) was placed on the day the sale started and the DVDs arrived today without a problem. Very fast shipping compared to last year. Well packed unlike a three DVD order I made a month or so ago.
I'm considering making a forth order. Is the Raise the Red Lantern/Ju Dou doublepack worth $14.68? Reviews state the picture quality and subtitles are bad. Are they bad enough to be considered unwatchable? Are they better or worse than the ERA or Scholar Versions which I'm also considering picking up at another site?

I was thinking of checking out Farscape. For the life of me, I cannot find Season 2, Collection 2 Starburst Edition (version 5?) on DDD's website.
I don't want to go with the original releases as I hear the flippers had problems, and the Starburst are cheaper. Anyone find this on their site?

I received my shipping confirmation e-mail today, and it's got a UPS tracking number. Being in Canada, I obviously don't want that because of their stupid brokerage fee scam. I called customer support to try to change the shipping method before it goes out, but 'apparently' it can't be done (even though it is still in the warehouse). The person I spoke to tried to assure me that I selected 3-5 day shipping. Obviously that's not the case and I told her that there seemed to be a lot of shipping 'upgrades' and that that is what most likely what happened here.
Very frustrating, as I'll have to refuse it and re-order. I know DDD is trying to improve service with these upgrades, but they need to realize that sometimes people use particular shipping methods for reasons other than because they're cheaper.
If DDD Dave is still reading this thread, please try and address this situation!
I just made my first DD order and am unfamilar with this "brokerage fee". Is this addition to any other custom fees and duties? I assuem that I will have to pay the 15% GST/PST tax on my order but I have to pay an additional fee to UPS? The GST/PST duty would be around $80 CDN for me and according to UPS chart I'd have to pay another $48.05?

There's a major glitch in DDD's system regarding the pricing of the X-FILES sets. Season#9 changed prices everytime I refresh/or move on to the next page. I finally got a correct price in my cart...but now, Season#5 shows as 29.27 in my cart. (after coupon)

I hear ya. I am psyched to be able to pick up the X-Files all at once for $200. Sometimes in this business of collecting DVD's, you snooze-you lose. Sometimes, you snooze-you make out like a bandit.
I don't have a general policy of waiting on TV on DVD sets, but by being behind the 8-ball, I picked up the Friends Boxset and Buffy Complete Collection last DDD sale for steals, I've just started collecting Northern Exposure with the new discounted Season 1 and 2, and now the X-Files. Buffy was the only blind buy, and I'm really liking it so far.

I can rationalize buying my day-and-date X-Files sets by thinking that:
a. I bought some of the early sets during the "glory days" of internet deals and didn't pay anywhere near MSRP.
b. These new sets, while a fantastic deal, omit the DVD of extras on nearly every set...
I prefer the new slim packaging to what I have, but I wouldn't want to part with those bonuses.
