So, now that summer is here, I've got the windows open at night and I've got a problem with a bird that cherps ALL NIGHT LONG.

Every night now this sucker (maybe there's even more than one) starts in at about 11:00 pm and stops when the sun comes up at about 6:00am, with all kinds of different sounds, pretty much like R2-D2 on acid.

It's in a medium-sized tree in the front yard, right on the border with the next door neighbor.

Just wondering if anyone knew what kind of bird tweets all night (I thought they mostly slept at night, except for owls), and if anyone had any suggestions for how to handle 'R2'.

At this point I'm ready to set the tree on fire.

It's a mockingbird

They tend to sing at night when they can't find a mate. So they sing as much as they can.

HA! I thought I was the only one! I have the same thing going on outside my apt. bedroom window!! I asked my mom what the heck was going on with this screwy bird being up all night and she said that it's looking for a mate.. It has an odd chirp though, I had never heard it before..

Give it some time . . . eventually either he'll go away, find a mate, or you'll stop noticing it.

Is Hallie buried under your window? I mean, like the song says:

"Listen to the mockingbird
Listen to the mockingbird
The mockingbird is singing o'er her grave ..."

I agree with the gun option, but use a water gun or a hose. It should be great fun shooting a bird with water at 2am.

I used to live in a house that had HUGE eucalyptus trees filled with wild parrots that were very loud - a few shots into the trees with a BBgun for a few days and I never heard from them again...

If this is true, one wonders if the bird is actually mocking itself.

That would be horrible. We have mockingbirds that s(h)it on our chimney. They might chirp all morning and half the day, but never at 3 or 4am. I actually like it while I'm awake.

I did this option when we had a Robin that would attack our bedroom window everymorning at 5am when the sun would cause his own reflection to piss him off. After a week or so of going mad I tied one of these puppies up in the tree and have not heard that little bastard again.
