View Full Version : No B&M/Retail Prices for THE PRINCESS BRIDE?

Well, now that the threads for Target's, Circuit City's and Best Buy's ads for the week of June 11-17 are out, they share something in common--no mention of new release of THE PRINCESS BRIDE (Buttercup and Dread Pirate Editions)! Anyone have any clues on what the prices at these places will be or (God forbid) will this be another case like PATTON: Cinema Classics Collection where none of these stores will even carry the DVD?

Its listed online for $20 at Best Buy, $25 at Circuit City, and $16 at Target (which seems to be one of the better prices around). I would presume all three would have them in store.

BestBuy.com shows it for $19.99, and I'd wager that the B&M's get one or two copies, but not much more.

Amazon.com has it at $16.19, and Deep Discount has it at $19.66, which means it'll be slightly cheaper than Amazon once the 20% sale hits.

isn't this release non-anamorphic? I'm wondering if it's worth picking up since the older one is anamorphic........perhaps dvdbeaver will do a comparison?

huh. I thought I read in Stuff that it wasn't anamorphic. I'll have to double check (although I wouldn't rely too heavily on them knowing dvds that well)

MGM says anamorphic:

That would be a pretty important misprint. I would really hope that it is Stuff that is wrong on that. I would be rather annoyed at that.

DVDEmpire has a scan of the back, and it shows it as Anamorphic.

Damn, can't decide which version to pick up, the red or the blue one.

Despite the fact that its pink color scheme is blatantly geared towards chicks, I feel the picture better captures the essense of the film so I'm going with the, gulp, Buttercup Edition...

Here is a review on this release. It says that it is Anamorphic.

This is basically a money grab release right?

The review above says there is an improvement in video. So I would say no. But read the review and judge for yourself.

The question is it's enough of an improvment until the HD release... I highly doubt that.

nevermind. I was thinking of another review (Napolean Dynamite). Carry on.

What makes you say this? I've found that B&M's carry plenty of stock of new releases, even if not advertised.

Is it a noticeable improvement over the previouse SE, especially in the AV department?

i was thinking the same exact thing -- girly color but a better composition than the dread pirate version.

Target, Circuit City and Best Buy didn't advertise PATTON: Cinema Classics Collection a few weeks back and, lo and behold, when the release date came, none of them carried it in store.

Bump. For those who aren't scrambling for it in the DDD sale, I spotted Princess Bride: Dread Pirate Roberts Edition for $14.95 at Meijer.

$16.99 at Costco a few minutes ago for both versions.

I found it at Wal-Mart for $19. The Dread Pirate Edition is the one I got and I'd never owned any of the past releases. It's worth it for me as the picture looks good from what I saw and the movie is on disc one with features on disc two. Aside from that, I like the packaging and slipcover. I was surprised that the actual cover also has the Dread Pirate theme and not a generic P.B. cover. There is also an insert and a booklet that plays off of the film.

I went for it at the DDD.com sale; yeah, it means I have to wait another week for it, but at just under $16, it was about $4-$5 cheaper than the only retailer I knew stocked it (Wal-Mart). Unlike Willh51, I went with the Buttercup Edition; pink and girly, yeah, but the imagery of the cover is more evocative of the heart of the story...

I got one of the 2 copies of the Dread Pirate Edition Tuesday at Circuit City (they also got 2 Buttercups). Price was $19.99 but I'm hoping for a better price within 30 days to go back & do a 110% pm guarantee (like the way Target dropped Con Air, Crimson Tide & Enemy of the State to $10 with 3 weeks). Maybe if the Costco has it for $16.99 I'll use them. They're about 35 miles away but close enough for CC to pm.

For anybody wondering, I noticed that there was plastic wrap around the slipcover ala spaceballs re-release. So if that's the case everywhere, we should see it with a slipcover for a long time.
