Penn & Teller Bull****: Abstinence - 06/05/06
Showtime, 9:00pm CDT (Repeated one hour later)
Meh, we'll see. The show has been disappointing lately.
No new show next week. I don't know whether the season is over (ten episodes compared with thirteen in previous seasons) or if they're taking a break like last year. There were reports before the season started that there would be just ten episodes this year and there was no mention of a break so maybe that's it.
BULLSHIT goes on the prowl for virgins! We meet women - and men! - who are saving themselves for marriage. We find out -what the hell for? Then, there's sex education! We find out if it is helping them screw…or screwing them up. And we get really revved up about teaching abstinence only! We meet an expert who encourages multiple sex partners before settling down. He has proof that sex reduces stress and it releases endorphins that make us feel good. The cherry on the top of our cherry is a visit to a masturbation clinic. Now we're talking sex education! We'll also meet up with the former US Surgeon General, Dr. Jocelyn Elders. She was fired for advocating masturbation as an alternative to sexual intercourse to prevent STDS, and that's BULLSHIT.

This whole "abstinence" craze just seems horribly irresponsible.
Look at it this way... it encourages people to get married and start families when they're young. And the first person you want to fuck when you're a teenager is probably not the person you're going to want to spend the rest of your life with.

I actually thought this was pretty good. One of the better episodes of the season. They covered the topic thoroughly and didn't half-ass it. I'm sure some people will criticize them for getting in their obligatory shots at religion but in this case that is the primary force behind much of the abstinence-only "movement."
It's also good (even though obviously inevitable) that they were sure to make the point that there is nothing wrong with abstinence if one chooses it and repeatedly made the distinction between abstinence and abstinence-only.
Kind of weird to see Joycelyn Elders after all these years making a comeback.
And our question about the end of the season has been answered. It's over but a fifth season is already assured. I think the fourth season was better than the third although a few episodes showed the same half-assedness as much of the third. They still have a way to go to live up to the first two seasons but at least they seem to be more or less on the right track.

Very nice episode.
I still find it unfathomable about how Jocelyn Elders was driven out of office.
at the hypocritical bitch at the end and the stammering doc. Product of the '60s.
I'm still not sure about sex ed in public schools, but if they are going to have it, they shouldn't half-ass it with abstinence-only crap. Particularly if that dumb-ass flash-paper demonstration is what you typically see - what a load of bullshit that was. It is downright scary that 35% of public schools use abstience-only education.

So, was it all about voluntary abstinence or was there anything of interest to those of us who have abstinence forced upon us?
