Cure Re-masters and Live DVD box set info

The following 2 posts from Robert Smith are on the Chain Of Flowers website. They are a little difficult to read but lots o' info.

JAPANESE WHISPERS AND...
5/30/2006 6:16:24 PM - by CURE:ROBERT

STUFF

JAPANESE WHISPERS IS DELETED
AS THERE SEEMED LITTLE POINT IN REMASTERING AN ALBUM THAT WASNT REALLY AN ALBUM ANYWAY
AND (AS HAS ALREADY BEEN POINTED OUT) ALL THE JW SONGS ARE AVAILABLE AS REMASTERS ON THE GREATEST HITS AND JOIN THE DOTS

AND 'OTHER' KMKMKM SONGS...

THIS WAS A DIFFICULT EXTRAS CD TO COMPILE
AS THERE WERE REALLY TWO...
ONE WITH 18 UNRELEASED AND B-SIDE INSTRUMENTAL DEMOS
AND THE DEMOS/OUT-TAKES/LIVE ONE THAT IS TO BE RELEASED

ON BALANCE I (AND THOSE I PLAYED BOTH TO) FELT THAT THE DEMOS/OUT-TAKES/LIVE ONE WAS JUST MORE INTERESTING AS AN EXTRA WITH THE KMKMKM ALBUM...

MAYBE THE OTHER ONE WILL LEAK OUT SOMETIME...

ANYWAY...
THESE NEXT REMASTERS REALLY DO SOUND FAB... PARTICULARLY THE TOP!
RSX

AND (AS HAS ALSO ALREADY BEEN POINTED OUT)
NOW ALL THE CURIOSITY TRACKS WILL BE AVAILABLE
AND
THERE WILL BE AN 'ALL THE SINGLES' COLLECTION NEXT YEAR - WITH STARING AT THE SEA TYPE LINKS INBETWEEN
AND
THERE WILL BE A LIVE DVD BOXSET
WITH ORANGE
AND SHOW
AND JAPAN(?)
AND
AND
OTHER SURPRISE STUFF

AND
A PRAYER TOUR SHOW?
HMMMM...
IF I CAN FIND THE FOOTAGE!

ONWARDS...

KMKMKM is my favorite Cure album (Although my favorite Cure song by a mile is Fascination Street). Looking forward to all the reissues, although I haven't been that big of a fan of the bonus material on anything so far.

I was really really hoping for the 12" mixes to finally appear on these reissues - "The Head on the Door" is my fav Cure album - but I suppose not. Oh well - can't stop buyin em now. [Though truthfully, this might be the last round I get unless the "Disintegration" bonus disc is very interesting.]

Maybe on this "all the singles" thing he talked about.

Now, understand this: I love the Cure.

But I'm a little put off by these remasters because they're so goddamned expensive.

At this point in time, every Cure fan already owns all of their albums.

And these reissues, which will apparently cover their entire catalog, are just remastered versions of already released material with a bonus disc of b-sides, out-takes, and other laying around Robert Smith's garage that are being slapped with $30.00 price tags.

BMG was a good source for the first round of remasters, but they're no longer listed on the site, which makes me wonder if they'll be carrying this next round of albums.

Sorry, but I'm not going to pay in excess of $100 for albums I already own just to get a bunch of out-takes I'll probably only listen to a couple of times. (And I already paid out the ass for an import version of "The Top" about ten years ago.)

You forgot to mention that they released a box set titled B-sides and Rarities, yet they still find some 10 CDs worth of rarities to rerelease. I have not started rebuying these yet, but I will as this is one of my top 3 bands of all time.

I've purhcased a couple of the remasters since they are one of my favorite bands from back-in-the-day. I have TIB and Pornography. I think I'm going to eventually pick up Faith and Seventeen Seconds. The live DVD box set sounds promising, but I won't get my hopes up too much as yet. To have a live document from The Prayer Tour would be a real treasure. Let's keep our fingers crossed...

Bump as these are supposed to street today. Not sure if I'm picking them all up or if I'll wait. Some of the extra stuff seems a little too 'bottom of the barrel' for me. Worth a listen, but nothing you'd want to shell out the extra $$ for.

I've listened to clips of most of the bonus disk stuff and it's pretty marginal. I'll pass on these as I have the previous ones. I'm in for the DVD box set though.

I traded in a bunch of stuff yesterday and picked up "The Top" [which I didn't own before and was the one Cure album I'd never heard in it's entirety] and "The Head On The Door" [my favorite Cure album]. The liner notes once again are fantastic, and though I haven't given the bonus discs a thurough listen yet they're pretty interesting. Not something I'd listen to over and over of course, but they're good to hear. Since I was trading in stuff that had been sitting in a box for years and I knew the guy at the store so I got a good trade in bonus and discount on the discs, I'm pretty happy. There's no way I would've spent $50 out of pocket on these though. Of course, now I have to get "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me" somehow. Maybe I can get someone t buy it for me for Christmas....

Though I've gotta say, I listened to the "Seventeen Seconds" bonus disc the other day for the first time since I bought it when the last round was released, and I quite enjoyed it. Guess they're good as a collection or archival type of thing, but certainly nothing like, say, the bonus discs for the Pet Shop Boys albums that are gonna get as much listen as the albums proper.

Again, love the liner notes though. And they look really nice on the shelf. You could argue either side to death.

If it hasn't already been stated, the deluxe edition re-issues eventually come out as single discs for $11-$13. Already happened with the 1st wave:

Well, I broke down and got a couple of these. "Blue Sunshine" is still in transit and a found a pretty good deal on "The Top" yesterday. I'm suprised at how much more I can hear now. The remastering definitly did some good. Usually I find that a 'remaster' means 'make it louder'. With this album in particular, I can hear the bass, rythym guitars, and keyboards much more distinctly. As for the second disc of rarities, there's actually some good stuff here. It's interesting to hear the various studio demos of most of these tracks, especially the occasional changed lyrics. It offers great insight into how these songs developed into the final mixes. I think I'm taking the cheap route and putting the other two releases on my XMas wish list. Good stuff, but it sure gets expensive quickly.

Good to hear that, I always worry about remasters sounding compressed.

The new double-cd remasters are $15.97 each at deepdiscountcd. Best deal that I've found for them so far.

I agree on the improved sound quality. I recently bought the Pornography, Faith and Seventeen Seconds reissues and I definitely noticed a difference in the clarity and accuracy of the recordings. It's particularly apparent on Pornography, whose deliberately muddy and dense production was almost unlistenable on the previous CD version. The new version is remarkably improved: A Short Term Effect turns out to have a melody, you can actually make out the guitars on the title track and the solos on "Strange Day" sound terrific.

Faith and Seventeen Seconds have much less dense mixes so the remastering is less apparent, but certainly noticable and welcome.

I have to disagree on the bonus material, though. I guess I've never really been one for demos, unpublished tracks and the like, but the stuff here is either decidedly B-grade studio stuff or OK versions of (admittedly good sounding) live tracks. Not to sound pretentious, but one thing I like about these albums is their purity and brevity: 10 tracks or less, over in about 35 minutes, each has a unique sound and that sound is consistent throughout the record. The extras seem to junk up that vision. I listened to those disks once, don't think I'll be revisiting.
