Which TV Shows need the Threat of Cancellation to kick things along ?

This last series of Alias rocked because it was getting cancelled

It seems serial type shows really kick into gear when they know they are getting cancelled.

Which other shows could benefit from such a threat ?

I feel Smallville definitely, it seems to be in cruise control

I think it boils down to bad storytelling. The two shows you mention are/were in bad positions because there advancing the plot at a snails pace. Alias had no choice to advance the plot before its finish or leave on an even more sour note. I understand not wanting to blow the load before its necessary, but can a show like Smallville have more than 4 mythology episodes a season?

Look how poorly the latter seasons of X-Files played out, they never got around to answering the questions.
