I have had a lot of fun with it, but I think it's ready to bite the dust. I waited with my friend online at night at Best Buy to get it on launch day, and end up buying it since I had waited anyway. Now, I'm starting to get those damn dirty disc errors. It's not too rampant yet, but slightly scratched games won't play, and new games will just randomly give me disc errors every now and then. Plus the thing just sounds like it's dying sometimes when it's loading.

I really don't know what to do now. I don't want a 360 at the moment, and it's not completely backwards compatible anyway, and I don't want to buy another Xbox for almost 200 bucks. I guess I'll just keep playing it until it finally bites the dust. Either way I guess I can finally get around to asking the question I have been meaning to ask for a while now.

Are there any ways to transfer saves to maybe a computer file, or something else without using a memory card? I have a memory card, but really the most important saves just don't transfer. I would love to be able to back up all the saves on my hard drive.

Second question. Can I somehow move those saves to the 360 if and when I ever end up purchasing one?

The only way to get saves off without a memory card is a softmod that would give you ftp access. Unfortunately you need a memory card for the softmod. If it's not the hard drive that's dying, you can put a new DVD drive in for about $30.

The only way to move saves to the 360 is by connecting the 360 hard drive to your PC and using a program called Xplorer360.

I have a memory card. I have that clear orange one that they gave the Xbox Live beta testers. It's not the hard drive that I know of. I'm just getting the dirty disc errors. What's this softmod thing? I wouldn't mind just having a backup to be safe.

Mine died recently too. I wish I could replace the cd-drive. I know that's the only problem.

Has anyone checked this site out?

Very informative.

Ssoft modding basically lets you play your games off the hard drive, so that the disc isn't required, except when you are initially transferring thegame to your hard drive. Since the DVD drive is by far the most likely point of failure, soft modding extends the life of your XBox considerably.

I'd highly recommend soft modding. Not to pirate games, but to extend the life of your XBox. Soft modding makes both the DVD drive and the hard drive replaceable. My XBox was dying and that was, in my mind, the only practical way to make sure that I can still play it 5-10 years from now. I've only got games on it that I own, and have no desire to do otherwise, and now I can continue to play them (and with faster load times too).

Another way to move game saves between your xbox and pc is by using an Action Replay/Action Replay Max or Max Drive [for Xbox]. You can get more information at www.codejunkies.com. By the way, you can not move "locked" game saves with these devices.
