Well, this bodes well to hopefully ensure that these films are relatively un-fucked with when they get releases on BR/HD...

Knowing Brian White and Bey Logan and what they did for the Hong Kong Legends label, I'm hoping these films won't be cut up or altered editions....

As long as they don't have Tarantino's ugly mug on the cover, this is great news!

50 Shaw Bros. titles ...... hopefully as well-presented as the R3 Celestial releases, and commentary tracks with Bey Logan would be great!

Generally, a flick with "Quentin Tarantino Presents" on the cover might as well say "Sucks ass." I hope that isn't the case with these releases.

Exactly. The only thing Tarantino contributes is his name.

What are you guys talking about? Hero was excellent. I'm glad that this Dragon Dynasty is coming out. I hope it does a better job than most of the Tartan line did and introduces more Asian films to the US market.

I think he's referring to the various alterations made to HERO for R1 release...

Sorry
I have the HK Edko SE of Hero and its' wonderful, I didnt like the alterations made though (I watched the UK cinema release which I think is the same as the R1 release?), dumbed down, less poetic subs and some things added (IIRC).

Some of the very first R3 Celestial releases like Come Drink With Me had Bey Logan commentaries on them.

Fyi,

Bey is not a big fan of the Shaw Brothers and didn't have the "hands on" connection with those films the way he does with Golden Harvest. While the commentaries are ok, they are pretty far below standard for Bey.

The title of the thread beats about the bush a bit:

These are some of the Shaw Brothers titles that they acquired:
"36th Chamber of Shaolin," "Eight Diagram Pole Fighter," and "Heroes of the East," all starring Gordon Liu ("Kill Bill"), "King Boxer," the first Hong Kong movie ever to be a worldwide theatrical hit, "Martial Arts of Shaolin," a classic title from Jet Li, "Come Drink With Me," starring Cheng Pei-pei ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon")."
If they are able to match/exceed the R3 releases for the above titles, I will definitely be getting them.

When they bought the SB stuff originally, they refused to pay for the soundtracks. This could have changed by now, but we'll see.

The R1 release of Hero really didn't bother me at all. I've seen both versions, and I think they're nearly identical. I really didn't see much of a change between the two.

The good news is that Dragon Dynasty is releasing SPL on DVD in September and the release is a two disc with tons of extras.

However, the bad news is that they have changed the movie name to "Kill Zone" and there's no confirmation of the run time. We have to wait and see if there's any cuts to this movie.

One thing to note about HERO is that Mirimax actually requested cuts to the film before it was released theatrically anywhere. The edited version that Mirimax requested was then released everywhere theatrically. Only later did the original extended edit get released in China and Hong Kong.

More bad news:
http://www.twitchfilm.net/archives/007053.html

According to an e-mail from a KS reader, an e-mail was sent out to those who pre-ordered the disc through HKFlix. Here are the changes...

Valued Customers-
Thanks for your pre-order of the new "SPL" ("Killzone") DVD at HKFlix.com! We are writing to inform you of some changes that have been made to this DVD since you made your purchase. We were notified of these changes today by the manufacturer:

1. The main audio commentary track may or may not include Donnie Yen. But it will still feature Bey Logan as previously advertised.
2. The "Never Seen Before Footage" feature has been cancelled.
3. The "Breaking News: Footage from Hong Kong Press Conference" feature has been cancelled.
4. The "Martial Arts Demonstration By Jackie Wu" feature has been cancelled.
5. The following two new "Anatomy Of A Scene" Featurettes have been
added:
a) "Alleycats" (With optional commentary by action director, Donnie Yen, and Bey Logan)
b) "Challenge of the Masters"

Both featurettes are supposed to have optional audio commentary by Donnie Yen AND Bey Logan, but this is subject to change.

The artwork will also be changed, and will be updated on our site within the next few days. All the other features previously advertised are still correct."

So even though some of these cuts I can understand [hands up anyone else itching to watch the press conference footage?] it is still sad to read that the Wu Jing and Never Before Seen Footage will be cut. Boo-urns.
