This Island Earth...8/29/06

Coming from Universal, it's up at their website and also at DVDDrive-in.com. It's newly remastered fullscreen. Isn't there some controversy because this is supposed to be in widescreen?

It's supposed to be 2:1 (or at least 1.85:1) per Jack Theakston. Judging from the caps he linked to, the film really looks better at that.

No idea why Universal will do open matte for TIE while they cropped Jet Pilot to 1.85:1 (which was held over a decade - made in 1947, released in '57).

Do you have a link to that? I would like to see it.

Well, it's been fun owning the original Image in my collection, but I guess now's the time to pull a Martha Stewart.

In all honesty, that would really suck, only because it would nullify 2 of my 3 holy grails. I'm OK with "This Island Earth" being re-released, as it was really only a matter of time. The bootleg market has been so profitable, I don't see why Universal didn't jump in any sooner. Just sucks to see it go after all his time, but as long as I get what I paid for it back ($100), I'll tough out the next 3 months.

This is hitting the same day as The Wizard, so perhaps Uni is putting out a batch of catalog titles that day. Seems like it would make sense to release MST3K: The Movie on the same day as This Island Earth. But MST3K or not, I'm glad to see that this is finally being re-released.

This title will join my collection as well seeing that I was unwilling to pay the going rates on Flea Bay.

Hah, I've been using mine to make hot chocolate!

I wonder if I'll start seeing used copies in the shops now, hmm, finally a little something to cheer me up after this Star Wars disaster.

Finally. I can't believe it took this long (nearly 6 years!) for Universal to reissue this.

It's 1.33:1 cos that's the OAR.

Update. Err: actually it appears that the OAR was 2.0:1 which sounds weird!

I know some people think the Image edition is lousy, but I never had any problem with it.

Though sadly I will now lose my sense of smug superiority at being one of The Few to own this.

I wonder if Universal will do a full-blown restoration or a cheapass vanilla release without a proper remastering...hmmm. Universal. Let me guess!

We've just had Tarantula and The Incredible Shrinking Man here in the UK...

No sign of the others though; I have a special regard for The Monolith Monsters

I'm glad I unloaded mine when I did, in order to get some OOP Disney stuff...which will also be re-released as Platinum Editions in a year or two.

I'm hanging onto MST3K: The Movie, at least.

The LD had better color but I sold my DVD for $100 on eBay...such a deal. Now I'll replace it for $10. It would have been nice if it could have been in it's OAR and anamorphic.

I'm going to email them and see if the respond.
