Any idea as to why all HBO season sets are pricey?

Hbo is pay cable, and needs to make money somehow. (thats the excuse i've heard from many members here and else where as to why they are so expensive)

That artwork is awesome! You can tell that someone put a lot of time into it. (a rarity these days)

The artwork is just the season 3 poster. You can download it here http://www.hbo.com/thewire/downloads/

This means the season 4 premiere should be right behind it

As for the pricing, they're going to reduce the MSRP of The Wire s1 and 2 down to 59.99 in June

I don't have HBO anymore so I didn't watch the show on TV when it aired, but I from what I hear, this season is better than 2.

Whoa!!! That's pretty awesome... I've always wanted to start watching this, and if it really is as good as people say it is, then it's probably worth a blind buy for me. Does HBO discount their older titles from time to time, or is this a rarity? There are other HBO titles I've been wanting to get (like Six Feet Under), but the price, of course, is a discouragement.

I think it's a rarity. However, some places will lower their own prices on older HBO titles for sales or whatever. For example, Best Buy had most of the Sopranos sets on sale for like $45 earlier this year.

It's rare. The first 3 seasons of The Sopranos has also been price-dropped. The Sopranos and now The Wire are the only 2 examples I can think of.

This is a release I have been anxiously awaiting. I didn't watch this show when it first aired, so I have been catching up with it through the DVDs. Now we finally get a release date for season 3! I just hope it's out in time for me to watch it and be ready for when season 4 starts up.

I picked up the first two seasons used at GameStop for $29.99 a piece. If you can get in on a B2G1 free sale, it'd be an even better deal.

On another note, I haven't gotten around to watching any of 'em yet, but I heard they're good.

Cool. I'll probably Netflix it though first. I loved the 1st season, but thought the 2nd waned quite a bit. Hopefully this season gets things moving again.

Season 3 does not make the same mistakes as Season 2. Go ahead pick it and you will not be disappointed.
