Wow. Two summer blockbusters that I actually liked and enjoyed are both doing under expectations with one of them being DOA.
I thought M:I-III would have no problem making another $30 million this weekend, especially with the positive word of mouth for the flick. I thought the film was going to have some serious legs until the end of the month, but it'll be just a memory come next weekend.
I thought Poseidon would do numbers similar to Troy and The Perfect Storm's first weekends, basically somewhere around $40 million, but I was wrong. I hope Vegas still gets an IMAX release of the film later down the line. However, I won't be shocked if my city doesn't get it in favor for an August DVD release in a one-last ditch effort to reclaim money off the sinking project.
At least we can all be happy that Just My Luck tanked.

I'm thinking Da Vinci will be the first huge hit of the year, Over the Hedge will be a strong holdover, and X3 will draw a huge crowd. MI3 will hang around for a while (low but not out) and Poseidon will sink.

Yeah, I picked DaVinci Code to be the top grosser for the Summer. Tom Hanks headlining a big budget film usually spells success. I think X-Men will have a huge opening, considering it has the Memorial Day slot, but it'll have steady drops after that. But it will probably end up with a nice take.

Gotta hand it to ya... man I thought for sure this would do better. Too bad, I caught it last night and really liked it. Have not seen MI III so I don't know how that is but everyone seems to be enjoying it.

I thought it was okay. I posted my thoughts in the Poseidon thread. After seeing it, it just didn't feel like a Wolfgang Petersen movie. It seemed more along the lines of something done by a hack like Roland Emmerich. It just felt so empty.

On the poster for Just My Luck, Lindsay Lohan looks like a transvestite version of the guy behind her (especially in a lower resolution image). At first I thought it was about some guy who dressed like a girl.

I'm thinking that Pirates will pull it away from DaVinci Code. It has wider appeal.

DaVINCI CODE has a strong book following, but that's an adult crowd. And with summer being a 13 to 24 movie going crowd don't you think it may bomb?
And keep in mind also that there's church going crowd that's been told to stay away from this movie.

Whoever greenlit that at Warner Bros. is definitely cleaning out his office on Monday, if the locks haven't already been changed.

I don't think that the catholic church speeches have much of an impact either way. Sure it'll spice it up for those anti-establishment folks and would have a few boycotting it or just turning away from it preaching that it is just a book. But those sides may very well cancel each other out.
Pirates 2 on the other hand has a well established top grosser film following and has a very strong pushing so I wouldn't even question it making cash hand over fist and finishing off on top.

I forgot Pirates 2, people still cheer for that trailer when it comes on.

I don't see where $160M went for Poseidon. Except for a few exterior shots & a couple of larger sets (lobby & ballroom) most of the rest of the movie has small enclosed sets and not realy effects, just water being pumped in. Even the exterior shots and the wave hitting the boat didn' seem like they could cost that much. They were cool but nothing ground breaking.

Isn't Memorial Day the usual time for these Summer Blockbusters to start come out? I think the reason why MI3 and Poseidon are bombing is because most people (and their target audience) aren't ready for summer movies just yet.
