Nintendo's press conference is slated to start at 11:30 AM CST (last I read). I better get as much work as I can done before then.. as I'll probably totally useless once the show starts and likely until I go home! Anybody lucky enough to be home or at work without lame site blocking software needs to take up the duty of posting updates here.

Will they open the show with Queen's "Wii Will Rock You?"

Will they comment on Sony's lovely new controller?

Do they have one final secret to reveal for the Wii?

Will we finally see the new Mario?

Will they announce a price and date?

I can't imagine they would even bother to mention a controller that was shown off by a demo of a guy being completely unable to control an airplane.

Hope they announce a price and a date. Screen shots look very Xbox from what I am seeing so far so I want to hear that $199 price so I can rest easy. If they go above $200 I just don't know.

i think with PS3 announcing at 500-600, its in their best interest to announce the price. hopefully 199.

How could I forget?! Kid Icarus!

05-09-06, 10:05 AM
I expect: Price, Date, Mario, Wii-controlled Zelda, Smash Bros Wii, MP3, Kid Icarus, and at least one new IP.

There will be great talk about Online and Wifi. Wii-DS connectivity.

Miyamoto and Iwata and/or Reggie engaging in a game of "online" tennis.

Reggie will have a long piece of paper on which to record all the names of the asses he kicks.

Even though he isn't nearly as relevant anymore, I keep thinking they will put Sonic in one of these Smash Bros games. That would be hella cool if they did.

And I LOVE Reggie. He is so Alpha he can't help but be funny. It's like you aren't getting troops ready for war, you're talking about Mario.

Over the last week or so, my hate for the Wii's name has died down, and I actually kind of like it now. I still feel a little silly saying it out loud, but I can live with that. Very smart of Nintendo to announce the name early so that it doesn't overshadow the rest of their announcements at today's conference.

After Sony's disappointing showing last night, I am incredibly excited to see what surprises Nintendo has in store. I don't expect anything shocking from MS, so I'm counting on Nintendo to deliver. I have a lunch meeting from 11:30 AM - 1 PM, but I think I'll duck out at 12:30 to catch the live feed. :D

Considering that the Wii will be at least $300 cheaper than the PS3... I no longer care if they call it the Nintendo RunnyPoop.

It will be 199.

Its hardly a step up from a gamecube, and they sell those with 4 games for less then 99 these days. The controller was all R&D costs, not hardware costs, i bet that thing is cheap to make. So im sticking to the 199.

I couldn't agree with this more. If it is $249, then it will contain more than just the console and one controller, even if it is just a 2nd controller to make it truly "Wii".

LOS ANGELES--This year, Nintendo held its pre-E3 conference at the Kodak Theater, which many know as the current site of the Academy Awards. The red carpet analogy is appropriate as Nintendo is responsible for several of the industry's biggest stars.

However, the recent years haven't been as kind to the one-time gaming giant, as Sony and Microsoft have stolen a lot of Nintendo's crowd, particularly in North America. Nintendo always strives forward by continuing to innovate and living by the mantra that games are supposed to be one thing--fun.

With the Wii, formerly code-named Revolution, at the forefront of this year's pre-E3 conference, there promised to be plenty of new games and ideas presented at the event.

9:00am A mass of industry media has assempled in the cylindrical multi-tiered lobby of the Kodak Theater, as they wait to file into their arranged seating. Things are moving slowly, but thankfully there hasn't been anything that resembles the hiccups that plagued Sony's conference.

9:25: The hall is filling up--it's about 80 percent full now, so it looks like the press conference will start close to its scheduled time of 9:30am.

9:28: The Kodak Theatre is a great venue for this event--a beautiful old Beaux Arts structure. Inside, the stage is dark except for a huge glowing Nintendo logo.

9:30: The attendees have repeatedly been told that the conference will begin promptly at 9:30. They've also been told to turn off their laptops, and cell phones. Neither side appears to be keeping its end of the bargain.

9:31: The MC has noted that the event will start promptly, an apparent dig at Sony, whose pre-show press conference yesterday started 50 minutes late. The announcement sparks a ripple of laughter from the attendees.

9:38: Red Steel is on now. Another player makes slashing motions with his controller. Miyamoto goes back to conducting to electronic orchestral music. Reggie welcomes the crowd with "If you're looking for the next genereation, you're in the wrong place. We're not just next, we're new. It's no longer confined to the few. It's about everyone. What you see is now always what you get. Playing is believing."

9:45: Link is fishing with nunchuku. Player nearly falls out of his chair as the crowd goes ballistic. Zelda is confirmed for 2006. Reggie back on stage.

9:46:"Today you will see, and tomorrow you will start to feel." He says that Nintendo will offer up "inspiration" rather than "information" this week.

9:47: Now Reggie is talking about the fact that many gamers know people who have "never played a video game." He says "this has to change."

9:47: Reggie notes there are some questions that people probably want to ask: pricing/availability, why the name, why so different? Reggie pooh-poohs incremental improvements. "That strategy works, but ultimately it's fatal."

9:49: "In the same way that Mario 64 changed everything, we ask, how can we make games feel new again?" Reggie says there won't be a price announced today.

Name chosen to stress inclusiveness--all of us, all gamers, around the world. Promises more news on third-party partners later in this event and on the E3 show floor.

9:57: When you shoot an arrow, you'll hear the bowstring twang at your ear from the speaker in the remote. Other developers also have a lot of ideas for how to use this speaker. There's a built-in rumble feature. Sony gave this up for their six-axis motion detection.

10:03:Metroid Prime 3: Corruption clip shown, it's dubbed the "most intuitive FPS ever." Then it's more Super Mario Galaxy.

10:04: "But can the system truly be new if all the names are the same? That's why we're working on new franchises," he says. ExciteTruck, Project H.A.M.M.E.R. (a beat-'em up), and Disaster, which looks like an action game.

10:05 Now Reggie seques into 3rd-party efforts, saying he'll introduce just a few of the games in development for Wii. Sonic! Gameplay footage of the hedgehog's Wii game. Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, as announced by Square Enix yesterday, is coming to Wii.

10:06: And Madden 07 is coming to Wii, as is Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam from Activision. And Rayman from Ubisoft. A Wii SpongeBob game is coming from THQ. Wii games are playable on the show floor. No pricing info. I'm wondering if that had anything to do with Sony's press conference yesterday? Either way, I'm sold.

pinata242

10:08 They are Xavier Poix and Roman Campos. The stage has now taken a nice red color. Player is doing something on screen, but we can't see the game footage. Ah there it is finally. They describe Red Steel as a "first-person action game set in both the US and Japan." It takes "full advantage of the Wii controller."

10:10: They're showing actual gameplay, though it's not clear what the game is running on--an actual console or development hardware. AI on enemies seems a bit dim. Player flicks nunchuck to reload. Levels incliude city streets full of neon and a pachinko arcade.

10:13: Z-button on Wiimote fires gun. "Freestyle mode" allows player to target enemies in slow motion, opting to shoot them fatally or disable them.

10:14: Now they're showing some swordplay. They describe swordfighting as "intuitive." You block with your left hand and slash with the right. In the game, the player is fighting a tatooed Yakuza member on a rooftop. Now Reggie is back. He wants to turn the focus to the DS, and introduces George Harrison.

Quick question, but I forgot. The wii will be backwards compatable with cube games, right? If so, I have to sell mine at a garage sale soon.

I'm pretty sure they've said before that it will have backwards compatibility for GC games. Not sure if that's going to be all GC games or only certain ones.

10:14: Harrison describes the DS as a disruptive device that shook up dominant thinking with "a different approach to portable play." Harrison says that despite claims from detractors, it wasn't just the early adopters that came to the DS--the games brought a much broader slice of users to the handheld. Claims 16 million DSs sold worldwide since launch, a number that's "millions more" than PSPs sold since launch.

10:16: 1.3 million people have participated in WiFi gaming over DS. Harrison speaks on Brain Age: 120,000 units sold in North America in the three week since it launched here. Says this compares favorably to Japan sales when it launched there.

10:18: And now Harrison is talking about the DS Lite, set to come to the US soon. Gives some love to New Super Mario Brothers, which he notes will be on shelves soon. Other upcoming games: Starfox DS, Diddy Kong Racing and Yoshi's Island 2.

10:19: Final Fantasy III is coming to US on DS with improved 3D graphics. No release dates on any of these. Downhill Jam will feature VOIP. Zelda DS clip shown. 100 new DS games expected between now and end of year.

10:20:Mario Hoops 3 on 3 named. Star Fox DS clip shown. A pink DS lite is on the video. A game called Elite Beat Agents. Clips of Yoshi's Island show baby Nintendo charcters.

10:23: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, Diddy Kong Racing, Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Big Brain Academy and Mario vs. DK: March of the Minis finish up the clips. Now Satoru Iwata has appeared on stage. He's greeted by enthusiastic applause.

10:23: Iwata says his main goal when he took over the helm of Nintendo was to expand the number of people who play games. To do this, he needed to attract both those who used to play but then quit as well as those who have never gamed.

10:23: To get both types of non-gamers to play his games, the usual model of producing increasingly more complex, more graphically detailed games won't work; these gamers are put off by increased complexity. Instead, he decided to reinvent games. The DS and especially the Brain Age games are one example of how they've reinvented games. The Wii controller is another example. "In addition, most lapsed gamers have wonderful memories of the games they used to play." Hence, the Virtual console."

10:28: The Wii console uses the Opera browser!

10:28: "I have always been develpoing and playing games. But these days I am busier and busier. When I have to wait for a loading screen I get frustrated. Maybe this has happened to you, too. If serious gamers find this frustrating, how can we expect the mass market to show more patience? The Wii console can power up and load virtual console games almost as fast as a telephone, in a few seconds."

10:29: Now he's talking about something called WiiConnect24. The console can be connected 24/7, allowing developers to push content to consoles even "while you are sleeping." Networking software is included in the hardware.

10:30: We're aiming for a system that is "new everyday."

10:30: Finally, we wanted to reach people who had never played games. The new console and controllers are very important, but most important is the software. We needed games that allow core gamers and non-gamers to "happily and immediately compete with each other."

10:31: One package addressing that need is WiiSports, a game including tennis, golf, and baseball, that will be be a launch title. He promises to "help destroy the wall" between gamers and non-gamers. "Wii can provide everyone with fresh new experiences."

PixyJunket

1:30 pm - Audience chuckles as disgruntled gamers are flashed on the screen. "The Wii console will also help solve this problem ... [it will be] almost as fast as the television or telephone. One more hardware feature -- we've designed our machine to provide owners with a variety of services when it is turned off. Wii Connect 24: the Wii console can be constantly connected to the internet. This means that developers can push a new weapon or vehicle to you even while you sleep. Anytime the console is in standby, players may return to find that their friends have left a message or a gift."

10:33: Iwata exits to more applause and Reggie returns. Reggie says "We'd like to invite all of you up on stage to play." That can't happen, but they do have three people selected through Nintendo's promotion with AOL.

10:33: Miyamoto will select one final grand prize winner to play the Wii onstage. Miyamoto comes to the stage, says that the game to be played is tennis. He gives a demonstration, holding the remote like a racket. Twisting the remote while swinging yields topspin.

10:35: Miyamoto pulls an envelope from his jacket and reads the name..."The winner is...Scott Dyer." Scott comes up from the audience, all smiles. He's going to play doubles with Miyamoto. They're going to play doubles against Reggie and Iwata.

10:36: The game features avatars of Reggie, Iwata, and Miyamoto, with a big question mark on a body for the contest winner. When the audience sees the personalized avatars, there's general laughter.

10:37: They're only playing three points. Dyer burns Reggie with a cross court shot. Another one. His angles are Wimbledon-worthy. It looks like the Miyamoto/Dyer team won, and they decide on a rematch. The second game is tied...no, Miyamoto takes game point for his second win. Tennis will be playable on show floor.

This was probably mentioned already, but being at work I don't have time to scan through the previous six (!) pages -- the feeling I got was that the speaker in the controller was the secret they've been holding on to for a while. At first, I wasn't terribly excited about it until they demo'd how it would work. As you pull back your bow's drawstring in Zelda, you hear the sound come from the controller. When you let it go, you hear the initial zing of the arrow come from the controller, but it dissipates as the sound travels to the TV, giving a better sense of immersion in the game.

Zelda at *launch* was a big surprise as well, IMO. Don't know if either of these was the "final secret" to which you refer. :)

The problem with a week or two after, is that if Nintendo wants to be a secondary console to the PS3/360, it would be better to be on the market before the PS3. Especially if they announce a price of $199. Even $249, (which I think will be the likely price, the others have raised the prices considerably for this gen). Nintendo would be crazy to ask some consumers to spend another $250 on a console, after they just spent $500-$600 a week or two before on the PS3.

I kept waiting for the amazing moment to happen at the press event. A 30 cent speaker inside the controller? Seeing the games being played was no shock to me, isnt that the point of the system, to play the games that way? Also, totally screwing GC owners by delaying a promised game just to launch it on Wii as well. It was supposed to be 1 disc that worked on GC and Wii, now its 2 seperate releases. They obviously had no killer app, so they had to delay a game for their PAST gen system and release it also on their new gen.

Kept waiting for what moment? Seeing as it is a video game system, Nintendo previewed the games it had available and how its new controller works. What did you expect? Also, that "30 cent speaker" will add a lot of depth to gameplay, so how much it costs is insignificant.

I agree that the press event didn't really contain any 'wow' moments. Seeing the gameplay in action was cool, but I don't think it really revealed anything I hadn't seen or read detailed descriptions of. I also agree that it's kind of crappy how they handled Twilight Princess, even if I am psyched for the added material. Seems like they painted themselves into a bit of a corner once they got the idea of adding Wii functionality and didn't have a good way out of it.

That said, there was one piece of info from the conference I hadn't really thought about and don't know if it was new or not: independent motion sensors in the nunchuk part of the controller. The more I think about that, I think it will definitely serve to make the gameplay way more immersive than if only the 'remote-style' controller had it.

While the conference didn't have a huge reveal to make me want the Wii even more, at least it didn't have anything to kill my excitement either. They could've announced a $350 price and, after talking about gameplay over graphics, tried to wow us with a bunch of pretty pre-rendered cut scenes. That would've killed my excitement just about as much as Sony's conference did.

Maquis

Great show, although I am bummed they did not announce pricing. Reggie should have just said "less than 1/2 the cost of a PS3" to drive home the price difference, and they could have left the option open for a $249 launch...

:hscratch:

I doubt with 27 playable games that include Metroid, Mario, Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, & Madden, they lacked a killer ap. Zelda is a system seller alone, couple that with Mario & Metroid and it puts the wii over the top for best launch ever. They realized the potential of helping launch the wii and shifted gears. It is still playable on the GC, so buy it and enjoy it if you aren't sold on the Wii. It will still play the same as it would if it were released today.

I think the Wii Connect 24 is ingenious... Nintendo is hitting on all cylinders, though I do have some concerns about Red Steel (why no blood and gore?) and the Wii graphics. Don't get me wrong, I'm far, far from a graphics whore. Plus I'm one of the most loyal Nintendo fanboys you'll find. Still, the games are not looking like anything that could not be done on Gamecube/XBOX from early reports. That's a little scary. But still, I'll have one the first day it is available. Suprisingly, even though Mario Galaxy and ExciteTruck were announced, I really love the Wii sports game! I know it looks simple, but I can imagine that being one of the funnest games to play at launch. Good work as always Big N!

Everything I've read says that when you d/l games for the virtual console, they get saved to the internal flash ram to prevent pirating.

Seeing as how the Wii only comes with 512 MBs of internal flash ram, isn't it liable to get full fast if you d/l many games?

Also, why can't d/l to a memory card so I can take Double Dragon to my brother's house to play?

We still don't know HOW they're going to charge us for the downloads, so there's got to be a way to tie a machine to either a user or to a credit card and thusly, anything downloaded by that machine.

I imagine that it will be very much live Live Arcade, via credit card, or prepurchase at retailers.

The difference, of course, being that you can't store your Live Arcade downloads on anything but the X360 hard drive, right? We're talking about (hopefully) being able to store the Wii downloads on removable media and how that will remain secure.

Easy enough to purchase credits or via credit card when it can't leave the box it was purchased from, let alone be copied.

Nope. You can put Live Arcade games on Memory Units.

Ah. Can you transfer from memory unit to memory unit or to a different xbox? What kind of security does microsoft implement?

Hmm... so should I cancel my preorder for the (GCN version) Zelda, since there are apparently going to be two versions of the game?

The games are tied to your Gamertag. You have to transfer your GT to the MU as well as the game. Your GT can only exist in one place at a time though. So once it its on the MU it no longer on your 360.

Probably so.

Thanks for the info, Corvin. That makes sense. Nintendo's set a precedent with the DS Friend Codes by tying IDs to systems in a non-portable way. I wonder if this philosophy will change with the Wii.

Looks like the low-res is available for download from Gamespot. You'll need to be logged in to get it to work, I imagine.

I was very impressed with the Wii presentation. The system looks like it's going to be a huge multiplayer party machine! I can't wait to play. Plus Mario Galaxy looks amazing! :D

Also I'm very intrigued about Disaster: Day of Crisis. The video footage looks cool.

Is Disaster related to Disaster Report for the PS2? I loved that game and the "HEY!" button.

Great stuff. Of course, I'm sad at the lack of pricing. But 100 DS games by the end of the year! Man.

I hate to say it, but this game is ripe for full on next gen HD graphics. :( Oh well.

Anyone else bothered by the clips of people playing? It's like here's a 2 second clip of metroid and here's a 30 second clip of some deuche bag hidding behind a couch.

And it's not a japan thing, they hate it too.

I watched the entire conference, and while the people playing was annoying they did show plenty of gameplay footage. I wasn't impressed with some of the graphics, but that's not really what I care about. I'm a little disappointed in how Red Steel looked though. The animation wasn't too fluid, and that kind of stuff distracts me, but I liked how fun the other games looked. Of course Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Warioware, and pretty much everything else I saw had me very excited. This might be the first system I ever actually preorder.

As a whole the DS is the system I'm most excited about after all the conferences. Sony barely mentioned the PSP and the new consoles are a long way off. 100 games though? Damn.
Even though the DS is getting badly out shipped by the PSP I'm glad Nintendo hasn't decided to just give up on it.

Yeah, they seem positive. I'm mostly interested in getting non-media impressions (I know its supposed to be a media event) and a confirmed list of the 27 games on the show floor for the Wii. I really hope Piliot Wings is one.

I'm a little worried about their impressions of the controls. I know it's early and they need to do tweaking, but they weren't really ecstatic about the feel. However I do trust Nintendo since when I first played Mario on the DS, I hated the controls, but as more games have been released I love my DS, as so many others do here.

I'm still shocked the nunchaku has motion sensor abilities as well. Is this new for e3? I don't remember them ever mentioning it before, and think it's really cool that you can have 2 independent motion sensored controllers. You really are using both your hands inside the game.

I can't even imagine how much fun these games will be if Nintendo truly pulls off this control mechanism right.

I think they talked about the nunchuck before, but never showed it off the way they did at E3. Most of the info was on the wiimote.
