How can you say its tanking hard? its gonna do 50-55 million which is what it is predicted. better then the second one if you take out the wednesday and thrusday since it came out on wednesday.
JJ Abrams does a lot better job then John Woo's slow motion shots. I dont know how you could say it killed the franchise.
Its living up the the hype its getting better reviews
this one has a 72% on RT, while the first one had 66% and the second one had 58%

I really liked An American Haunting. I had hoped it would do better, but I guess not. It was a really silly release date for them to pick.

I agree that a $17 million dollar opening day is by no means tanking, but I would say it's below expectations. I think today is going to be a big day for MI:3, just because I think some of these kinds of blockbusters help maintain their legs by advertising that it's broken the record for largest 3 hour haul on a Saturday night between 7:14 and 10:14 pm, or whatever the useless statistic is. If it doesn't grab the interest of the people that don't need to see it on opening weekend, a big factor becomes how many other people have seen it and how much they hear about it.

"This weekend, all eyes are on MI3 to energize the marketplace and the fireworks begin early with many theaters starting their first showtimes at 10:00pm on Thursday night. A colossal theater count that is the second largest in history for any live-action film (after Spider-Man 2's 4,152) will make sure the product is available around every corner. Breaking into a mammoth 4,054 theaters in North America, the action thriller might open with around $74M over the Friday-to-Sunday span."
It'll be extremely lucky if it manages to make 60 million.

After the universal hate for M:I:2 (which opened with $57m), I'm amazed M:I:3 is doing so well. Should wind up with around $54m for the weekend.
And really, sarcasm doesn't read well in text .

And since Mission Impossible 3 should be having a $55m opening, and is considered a "flop" as such, what was The Island considered? Certainly a movie opening with 1/3rd its budget vs. one opening with 1/10th can't be considered the same thing.

Not meeting expectations? Sure. Tanking? Hardly. I think M:i-III is going to prove to have better legs than people around here are expecting. I think it should have a good solid couple of weeks where it pulls in some decent coin and overall, it's going to turn a handsome profit.

Ah, here we go, the "Tom Cruise's career" is over nonsense begins... Geez, you'd think the guy was killing babies in Times Square the kind of backlash he's seen. Don't get it myself.

Sierra, what are you responding to? Nobody on this thread has mentioned Tom Cruise's career. Why are you even trying to defend him when there is no mention of him here at all? Maybe you, who introduced this subject of Cruise's career, can be partly to blame for all the crap he gets. I just don't get it myself.
EDIT - Natural beat me to it, but I guess it can mentioned twice.

Boxofficeguru is just one person on the internet. There were others who projected that this would land between the 50 million to 74 million range. So just because the most inflated of those guesses isn' being met isn't signs that this is any where near the same as the film tanking. It's still going between its targetted range which means that it is for the most part, successful.
Hell, Boxofficemojo perdicted 64 million
http://boxofficemojo.com/forecast/
So just because it didn't go beyond someone's wild guess doesn't mean that it's a flop. 50+ million for the weekend is around expected for the film.

I enjoyed the hell out of M:I-III and I am shocked with it's Friday total. I was expecting somewhere around $22-23 million. I am expecting a huge bump during the weekend as the film's target audience (teenagers) will be out of school.
United 93 is taking a huge drop.

The weekend isn't over, and MI 3 was really good, so maybe word of mouth will help.
Also, finals were this weekend at my university so I know a lot of people are studying like crazy not even bothering with a movie.

Let's see, all of John Woo's post-MI2 movies have been duds both critically and financially and MI3 has gotten far more favorable reviews than MI2, but yet they should have gotten John Woo instead of JJ Abrams, based on first day totals that show that MI3 will make approximately what MI2 did in the first weekend. That's a good one.

[Anecdotal Evidence]
I was surprised when I went to see m:i:III (or as I call it "Emm Colon Eye Colon Eye Eye Eye") and the theatre was nearly empty. This was on a Friday night at 10:00pm. Eventually people did shuffle in but the crowd was smaller than I expected. But American Haunting sold out its screen.

FWIW the 4:50 showing of MI-3 at my local multiplex was mostly empty. That having been said, it was a crackerjack flick and I enjoyed the holy hell out of it. Then the banana dumplings from my colon did a naked willy dance. Groin, and

I don't think its going to be bomb but i think those who have said that it is going to the biggest blockbuster of the summer is going to be somewhat shocked.
I can't say anything about it since i haven't seen though, and after the last two i may wait a few months more.
