Anyone else holding off DVD purchases because of HD/BR?

Now that I'm starting to see titles being listed for both formats, I'm starting to curtail my purchases SIGNIFICANTLY. At least 50% of the titles I order are action or sci-fi type films. They tend to gain a lot from better media. If the players were only about $250 and the media was the same price as regular DVDs I wouldn't wait for a winner of the format war. But since it would cost too much to buy a mediocre first release player for each format, I'll wait to see if their is a winner or wait for a reasonbly price player which handles both HD DVD and BR comes out. I realize some have been anounced but I'll wait for a model sub $400 before I make that jump.

Anyone know what camp Denon is in?

I think Sony/TriStar will give up a lot of money to people who will just download movies to hold them over until the format war is over. Just my unresearched opinion of course.

I won't be investing in any High-Def DVD until this format war ends and all the studios support it.

im slowing down a bit (less investment in tv on dvd) but like others wont invest till there is a clear winner and the prices come down dramatically.

I'll also wait for at least a third generation machine as I dont want to pay $500 to be a beta tester

Yes ... although, like others, I am not going to be an earlier adopter, like I did with DVD.

I see the sudden increase in Re-released DVD's as studios trying to make another buck on a double dip, only to try for a triple dip on the new format. It's just my conspiracy theory, but I am guessing that the studios are remastering in High Def now, but re-releasing them on regular DVD instead, biding their time for release on new formats.

Sort of. I'm not going to blind buy as much and only pick up the titles I really want until Blue Ray comes out.

No. Most of the stuff I like that is coming out I have waited a long time for, so I am not waiting even longer for them to come on HD/BR.

Not buying any more TV on DVD (unless I have already started the series)
waiting either for prices to plummet or 1-2 disc HD-DVD sets of entire seasons.

It's hard not buying Battlestar and Lost though.

Yes I held off Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire on DVD because of the upcoming Blu-Ray disc.

Yes. My DVD buying has slowed considerably due to HD-DVD.

I'm pretty much not buying any films on standard definition DVD, maybe a really cheap catalog title here and there, but I'm skipping most new releases (I've only bought 9 total movies this year... Trust me, that's cutting back.)

I'm limiting my DVD purchasing to TV shows and I'm even slacking there. I only bought Beast Machines and Batman: The Animated Series (Vol. 4) in April.

I'm holding off on buying the latest theatrical releases because I figure those titles with be in the first few waves of titles. It's the catalogue stuff that I'm still picking up with great frequency simply because if titles like Modern Romance took 8 or so years to finally hit DVD shelves I don't want to have to wait another 8 years or so for it to appear on the next generation format. That make any sense?

No. I didn't buy into DVD until there was a critical mass of non-mainstream titles available; if HD/BR becomes the new standard and studios like Criterion, Artificial Eye, MK2, etc. make the switch, I will too. If it remains a niche for audio-/video-philes, like SACD or SuperBit, then no thanks.

I am excited about the new formwat but have not seen a single title that catches my interest. Also, I mainly import or seek R2 classic/foreign cinema...so, the studios are not interested in me/or those like me. If Kino, No Shame, Wellspring, New Yorker...and the Euro giants (MK2, Medusa, RHV, AE, WILD SIDE, the Aventi Group, Carlota, Raro, 01 Distribution, ArtHaus-Gr, and all the rest of the little guys join....then ok, let's talk. But I am not going to replace what I already have, maybe upgrade 20-30 titles...that's it).

Ciao,
Pro-B

I didn't start collecting DVDs until about 2001. To be fair, I was a teenager then though, and had no disposable income before.

I have no intention to buy HD-DVDs (especially given the fact that A) I don't have an HDTV, and B) I'm not going to double dip for essentially the same content), until/if they replace DVDs.

That being said, I also agree with the fact I ain't choosing sides until there's a winner.

My DVD buying of new titles is a little slower but DVD's like the ones coming next week of The Poseidon Adventure, Towering Inferno, etc. I will keep buying as who KNOW's when you will see these released on one of the new formats. They'll be to busy releasing popcorn catalog titles and new stuff. I won't be slowing down on TV though, just some stuff too good to wait for (i.e. ROME, LOST, Deadwood).

Yes. If I buy any new titles, it'll likely be from studios who support BD. Anything that comes out from Universal, Paramount, or Warners, I'll wait for the HD-DVD release.

Yes...Its not nill, but its very drastically reduced. But that also has more to do with the lack of stuff now coming out that I need or want to buy, so its a mix of both really.
