I've seen a couple of third party grip attachments, but it's tough to tell how well they are made, how well they stay attached, how comfortable they are, etc.
Any recommendations?

Well, the problem that I have with the DS is the size of the DS, as well as the weight. I have held a DS Lite that a buddy of mine imported and it was much more friendly for those with medium to larger hands.

Still, it was a bit of a flippant response to a simple question. Clearly, I know the Lite exists, but what I'm looking for is something that allows me to play the DS I already have for any period of time.

i haven't heard of anything, but if you stick it out and play few hours a day your hands will get used to it. or you'll just start getting hand cramps i know what you're saying though, but i play my ds at least 5 hours a day and don't even think about it any more.

Based on previous experience I find it hard to believe the DS Lite will be more comfortable than the original (though I'm not saying it'll be a step down either), as for me the comfort usually lies in the amount of space given between my hands. It was hell for me to move to the GBA SP after the nice, wide original GBA.. but the battery made me deal with it. Going to the DS after that was like letting out a deep breath or air I'd been holding in for a long time. Of course, weight may be a factor.. but I haven't noticed any issues myself in that regard.

I can't quite describe my problem...but it's something about the height of the DS combined with the proximity of the buttons to the edge...in order to maintain control on the shoulder buttons, I see to have to hold my thumbs in a really awkward way. If there were some bulk on the outside edges to make it more ergonomic, I think it might help.
I'm sure you guys have seen the add on grips...and was just curious whether anyone had tried any of them.
I also think that the shorter height and larger buttons on the lite may help some...but won't solve the problem.

I have seen the grips that you talk about, but did not consider them, as I figured the extra weight (albeit as little as it is) would cause more of a problem than help.
I don't know if this helps, but when I play DS for an extended period, I usually rest the DS on my stomach, or lap. This seems to help with the weight issue, and makes it easier to access at least the R trigger, as well as the ABXY buttons.

It's the A button that always gave me trouble. Especially in Mario Kart - I could only play for 10 minutes or so before my hand would start to hurt. I'm hoping the DS Lite fixes this problem. Of course, I did manage to play through Castlevania with no problems at all.

I have a DS Lite, and I agree that it is more confortable. With the original DS, my thumbs would hurt after a while. The DS Lite has softer buttons that are more responsive, and somehow that helps. You don't have to push down on them as much.
