I have the motorola DCT 6412 for my comcast DVR box - i cant believe how fast the 120 gig HD filled up. Hi Def shows eat up the space very very fast-
So, is there any way to get the shows off of the box, and onto blank DVD-rs ?
I hope this question is not breaking any rules here, - im just curious if theres a way to do this?
thanks

You should be able to pull this off. Do you have firewire ports on the back?
It is a matter of downloading drivers for your particular box onto your PC. Hook up the box to your PC via firewire. Use a capture program that allows HD capture and you are good to go. Unfortunately, there is no drag and drop only real-time capture. I have done it, but just too much trouble for me to do it often.
Google your box model with the word capture and you should find what you need.

I have the same box w/ a different cable company. As CRyan said, you'll have to watch it while it records off to your computer. Which also means the computer and box have to be located physically close together. Too much inconvenience. There are easier methods.

We have the same box with Comcast. A while back we needed to swap out it out for a new one. As the guy walked out the door with the old box, I realized he was also walking away with all the shows that were still on the DVR.

Just to get it off my chest... I hate Comcast DVRs. I'm now on my sixth.
Anyway, to answer your question, there's several ways to do it. You can go firewire if your box still supports it (some cities are disabling the firewire outs) or S-Video as I do.

I agree about the bugginess of these Motorolla boxes. I think it is mainly the software but man do they have issues.
